Throwing billions in public money behind a pipeline at a time of climate breakdown – while sweeping aside environmental protections, meaningful Indigenous consultation and workers’ right to strike – is absolutely not in the national interest.
This is just another gift to an oil industry already on track to make $100 billion in wartime profits this year alone. We pay, we take on the risk, and they reap the rewards.

Tonight Yom Kippur begins, the most sombre moment of the Jewish calendar. It’s a time of atonement - a time to grieve those who have been lost, a time to acknowledge and take responsibility for harms we have caused, individually and collectively. For Jewish people, the personal has always been political and the political always personal. This year I'm reflecting on the fact that we failed to do our part to stop an ongoing genocide committed in our name. There are many other fronts where I have to do the work of repair. But nothing on this scale.

There's a reason previous Liberal governments looked at privatizing airports and didn't go through with it.
Private investors don't want a stake in our public assets to make them better. They’re in it to make as much money as possible for themselves - while workers and passengers pay the price.

1/ Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, people across Canada are gathering in remembrance and renewed determination to ensure ours is a country where every child matters.
As the late Honourable Murray Sinclair reminded us, “there can be no reconciliation without truth.”
But today, the bravely, painfully told truth of residential schools has become a primary target for hate movements, as we saw on the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc reserve.
So it’s more important than ever for every one of us to uphold the truth, stand with residential school survivors, and continue to share their stories.
And more: it’s past time for our governments to fulfill the long-unfinished 79 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report.

2/ The Canadian Labour Congress has outlined exactly why this is such a bad idea.
We don’t make Canada stronger by selling off our critical infrastructure.
Protecting Canadian sovereignty means keeping our airports in public hands.

Tonight I’ll be dipping apples in honey with my family and making fervent wishes for a sweeter year to come. We live in a terrifying time, but there is still much to be savoured, including our freedom to build hope together in collective struggle. Happy Rosh Hashanah to all who celebrate!

Incredibly brazen for the Prime Minister to boast about the “lasting benefits” of expanding fossil fuel production on a day like today.
Record-breaking heatwaves. Toxic smoke engulfing cities and towns. Out of control wildfires forcing entire communities to evacuate.
This government is spending billions of dollars in public money to expand the very industry that’s causing climate breakdown — at a moment when renewables are cheaper and more available than ever before.
No more climate-wrecking corporate welfare. We need a government that protects the people and places we love.

Tonight we mourn the loss of a remarkable leader.
Joan Phillip was utterly devoted to making life better — for her neighbours in Vancouver-Strathcona, for Indigenous youth, and for working people across the province. She spent a lifetime at the front of the fight for justice. Now, it is up to all of us to carry her powerful legacy forward.
I’m sending strength to her partner, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, her family, and everyone whose life was richer with Joan in it.

This is the third time in six months that Benjamin Netanyahu has flown through Canadian airspace.
Contrary to the GAC spokesperson’s claim, he does not have the freedom to make that decision. Foreign leaders are required to seek permission before doing so.
Netanyahu is also wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes. As a member of the ICC, Canada has a duty to arrest him if he enters the country.
Has the government been knowingly shirking its responsibility and allowing a wanted war criminal to fly through our airspace? If he is flying through without permission, why not say so?
Allowing this to pass without consequence sets a dangerous precedent. Canadians deserve a clear answer.

The announcement of 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods is the latest economic grenade thrown over the border by an out of control President who has lost touch with reality.
It is a direct attack on Canadian workers and industries, putting thousands of jobs at risk. And it will drive up costs for American consumers, who like Canadian consumers, are already feeling pain at the pumps and supermarket checkouts because of Trump’s illegal war on Iran.
Donald Trump is trying a new, obscure legal basis for this latest attack. If these tariffs go ahead, we must be prepared to fight them with counter-tariffs and put every dollar behind supporting workers in affected sectors. The Carney government must refrain from more concessions.
We are tired of being treated as Trump’s tariff guinea pigs. New Democrats stand with workers, communities and all Canadians in defiance of this newest threat to our economy and sovereignty.

Sometimes you read something that tells you what you already know…but you feel as if for the first time.
I read this searing piece through hot tears of rage and renewed determination.
Canada should be using every tool we have - legal, diplomatic, economic - to rein in and isolate this rogue state.
It should be a national scandal that we aren’t.

Trump is fuelling a new McCarthyism that is both delusional and dangerous. It’s clearly intended to crack down on Americans who are resisting his anti-democratic agenda: including deadly ICE raids and endless wars of aggression. It’s also a serious escalation of violent authoritarianism from our next door neighbour.
Canada’s participation in this spectacle puts progressive Canadians at real risk. It’s outrageous, and the Prime Minister owes Canadians an explanation as to why he’s involving our country in this ugly episode.

This contract is clearly designed to enable both Trump's mass deportation campaign, and his move to use ICE to manipulate the midterm elections.
But it’s also a reminder of how deeply entwined Canada's elites are with US corporate and government interests.
If the Carney government is serious about Canadian economic independence, it should move to block this contract immediately, with new legislation if necessary.
Collaboration between Canadian corporations and ICE should be illegal.

This is the government of Canada’s scientific finding.
It is true.
It is also a terrible message. Here’s what’s also true:
Every tenth of a degree of global warming matters.
Every fraction of temperature rise we avoid saves lives, reduces disease, food and water shortages, disasters.
That means:
Every wind turbine and solar panel deployed
Every heat pump installed
Every energy efficiency retrofit
Every electric bus and vehicle
Every job created from all these things…
It all matters! It all counts.
But so do new pipelines, the LNG boom, and the Carney government’s dismantling of Canada’s climate policy.
Folks, it’s not too late. We can change course and choose a healthy, safer future.
We just need the right kind of nation-building projects.
(And that includes engaging First Nations first.)

Wildfires are getting more and more devastating because of global warming, which is primarily caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Trump won’t say that because he’s in the industry’s pocket.
If he wants compensation for the wildfire smoke, he should go after the oil and gas giants responsible.

2/ What is our government doing? This project defies common sense - this is corporate welfare on a surreal scale, giving a gift to an industry making $90 billion in excess profits this year, and which still refuses to pay for its own infrastructure. It makes a mockery of the duty to consult First Nations, guaranteed under our constitution. You can’t approve a project and then engage in consultation: that is just a pipeline to the courts.

3/ And for Canadians across this land, it is a kick in the teeth to call this climate bomb of a project “in the national interest”. It is in Big Oil’s interest for sure. But it doesn’t do a damn thing for people struggling with the cost of food and housing, increased costs from privatized healthcare, and of course the daily anxiety of climate breakdown.

Bravo Mayor Chow for taking action to protect Toronto residents from surveillance pricing.
It’s time to end this predatory practice before it becomes normalized - yet another daily digital injustice.
So far, the Carney government has promised vague action in the future, from a new agency that doesn’t even exist yet.
Instead, we need a national ban on surveillance pricing right now. That’s what Premier Wab Kinew has done in Manitoba, what NDP premiers in waiting like Marit Stiles and Claudia Chender are fighting for, and what Mayor Chow is proposing.
Your personal data should be yours alone, not a commodity for Big Tech and Big Retail to mine, sell, and use to rip you off.

In this photograph, PM Mark Carney is touring the Government Operations Centre - the nerve centre that leads the “integrated federal response to all-hazard events of a national interest.”
The workforce there has been cut in half thanks to Carney’s public service cuts, from 100 to just 50 workers.
In other words, to advance major projects “in the national interest” (like pipelines and military hardware), the PM has slashed the number of public sector workers who coordinate the response to emergencies “of a national interest”.
As Sharon de Sousa of PSAC says,
“Gutting it by almost half puts people across the country at risk, including frontline workers who are battling wildfires, supporting evacuations and risking their lives.”

Across the street from Parliament Hill and in Montreal, Bank of Canada security officers have been locked out and on strike for more than two weeks. These security officers protect one of Canada’s most important public institutions every day, and they deserve fair wages, decent working conditions, and respect.
Instead, they have been locked out while the Bank relies on replacement workers. New Democrats fought to ban scab labour because replacement workers undermine collective bargaining and weaken every worker’s right to negotiate for a better future.
The NDP stands in solidarity with these PSAC members and all workers. The Bank must end the lockout, stop using scabs, and negotiate a fair deal now.
