Every so often there is a hilarious detail amid the never ending car-crash that is the Trump “administration”.
“I was at an industry meeting this week, and I can tell you one of the biggest concerns was that we might see diesel prices [in the US] go to $10, and the equipment, you know, the pumps and the dispensers and so forth can’t handle a number that high. That’s incredible,” he said.
From the FT.
I’ve been reading it too. It is quite the document. Forget that he’s Pope. A mind for our times. A light in the gloom.
The due diligence required to moderate and check our electronic final exam experiment is going to drive me to drink. We now have three versions of every question on the paper (about 80 some shared between 3 papers) and the fiddliness of making sure that each of these versions is the same is going to drive me mad.
And I've discovered that one of my beloved colleagues does not know that when you are generating SMILES strings there's a difference between benzene and cyclohexatriene #teaching
If Chrome is a threat to the security of US military personnel then it's clearly a threat to everyone else.
Odd that they didn't learn from the Strava incident that @eliothiggins.bsky.social and @Bellingcat@mstdn.social uncovered a few years back. Memories are short.

Lovely exhibition inspired by The Second Law by the Japanese artist Reijiro Wada. The man does things to titanium that will make you marvel. At the Anglo Japanese Davies Foundation in Regent’s Park. #free #microstates #entropy #Boltzmann #titanium
Catching up with a pile of old newspapers, I find @MarcAbrahams@mstdn.science staring out of the 23 April edition of Le Temps. It’s a great paper with smart journalists and little clickbait. IgNobels excepted, of course. 😜
A very good interview with trenchant comment on the threat to US science. And even a passing reference to two banana-clad “badauds” (gawkers/flâneurs).

A Pope for our Time!
The unmistakeable and BRILLIANT voice of Rhiannon Giddens is on BBC Radio 3 from Wigmore Hall. I'm gutted that I'd not spotted her gig in advance as I've only ever heard on "wireless". https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/live/bbc_radio_three
If you've forgotten the marvels that is America, she embodies so much of the best in America represents.
