@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A8: I can’t figure out a good way to summarize the week. I didn’t know I was capable of riding 400 miles in 8 days without a recovery day built in. I wasn’t even sore at the end! Cycle the Erie Canal is amazingly well organized, other riders said it was practically the gold standard compared to most other tours of that kind. I chose to rent both a tent and a bike—all I had to do was pedal, a smart choice for me. Read the alt-text about the photo inside the Y. #bikenite

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social In my town this is known as “community.” We have a LOT of it. There’s more than one guy with a truck, but then there’s Limon. He has the most dilapidated truck I’ve ever seen. I think it’s literally held together with chewing gum and baling wire, but if you need “someone with a truck”—he’s THE guy to call.

@ericm@infosec.exchange @ascentale@sfba.social @edd@freeradical.zone @bikenite@fedigroups.social solid advice! I can’t imagine anyone doing a century without stopping, (except the truly exceptional riders aiming to break records.) If you’re going to stop, build a hearty snack or meal into it. An hour’s rest + refueling makes a huge difference

@Urban_Hermit@mstdn.social @transworld@masto.ai they need to change the procedures. This is ridiculous: “any county resident can challenge a book by filling out a single form, and the school is required to remove it from shelves within five days. Putting it back requires a formal hearing. In Clay County, one man exploited that asymmetry to file more than 400 challenges, resulting in 287 books removed in a single school year—titles that included The Handmaid’s Tale, Slaughterhouse-Five, and The Color Purple.“

@MissConstrue@mefi.social I have questions. In my area, egg prices are stubbornly high at farmers markets. Prices soared during the “avian flu”—some of the farmers chalked it up to having to buy special equipment or feed or medicines…..we paid more for the eggs. But since the indie farmers raised their prices partly due to higher grocery egg prices, will the indie prices come down as well?

@MissConstrue@mefi.social a very progressive farmer! your points about “everything costs more” are well taken, so now I’m worried about my indie farmers who are charging $10/dozen. If grocery store egg prices fall dramatically, the little guys will get priced out even though their expenses won’t go down….

I found this photo in the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse. The description that goes with it is really important to think about, since it relates to today’s struggles between bikes and cars. Multiple kinds of transportation exist alongside each other and each is necessary. It’s almost never either/or. #cycletheErieCanal

Another event that used to be held on the mall in DC was the solar decathlon, sponsored by the Department of energy (?) Teams from colleges and universities across the country would compete to achieve the highest score in solar efficiency. Each team was challenged to build and power a small house which had to be heated and cooled completely with solar power. They were very innovative! I believe they ended up moving the competition to California. Does anybody else remember the #solardecathlon

The Smithsonian used to hold their Folk Life Festival on the Mall in DC around this time every summer. It was a wonderful event— it was always very crowded as well as very educational. One year the focus was on the Mekong River basin. A group of monks showed their pictorial alphabet. Another year it was Scotland, and a woman demonstrated the process of making fine, knitted lace. Does anyone else remember the folk life festivals? please share your memories. #folklifefestival

“It’s crazy that we celebrate people who are billionaires. It should be illegal for Christ’s sake. It’s got nothing to do with money, and everything to do with how big their dick is. We should have awards and whenever someone achieves $100 million, which is already obscene, we give them a bronze statue of a dick, and when you get $1 billion, we could give them an even bigger dick.”
