I successfully avoided earning a volunteer badge ribbon at PyOhio this weekend, despite what some other folks may tell you.
How is it that banks implement the most non-standard, sketchiest-feeling MFA login methods again and again?
PyOhio is this week! It's a wonderful conference that I look forward to attending, and you should too.
Registration is still open at https://www.pyohio.org/2026/attend/registration/.
And if you, like me, forgot to order your t-shirt in the first round, you can still get one shipped directly to you at https://www.pyohio.org/2026/attend/shirts/.
Some day, I'll learn to write conference recap blog posts.
I'll be at Data Con LA tomorrow! If you're there, find me to chat about Python and PyCon US.
I don't know who needs to hear this, but "it's not even that hard, just try" isn't a constructive response when someone says they're struggling with a task. Offering help is a fine option, and so is not kicking someone when they're down.
If you participated in PyCon US, please fill out the survey. It helps a lot. Remind your friends.
Becoming more excited for PyCon US by the moment. Packing and prep will soon be replaced by seeing folks I don't see often enough, meeting new friends, watching talks, and the many, many other events that happen at and around the conference. See you there?
Why is it that I keep seeing "everyone should pin their GitHub Actions versions to a SHA because that's the secure way to do it" and not "GitHub should build tooling that creates and manages Actions lockfiles by default"? Am I just missing that version and only seeing the former one boosted?
Shout out to the person at the restaurant playing Squirrel Nut Zippers. Not often I hear this out in the wild. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yS2IBMQIjDo

@AlSweigart@mastodon.social The voter affirmation cut-off for this year was August 25th, 2026 2:00PM UTC per https://pyfound.blogspot.com/2026/08/announcing-psf-board-candidates-for-2026.html#:~:text=Voter%20affirmation%20cut%2Doff. It's worth noting this so that members that would otherwise be eligible to vote but have missed the affirmation cut-off aren't misled. (PSF members in membership classes eligible to vote should still plan to affirm and vote in 2027, though.)
📺️ The video for the live concert they did to promote The Vampire Lestat is now on AMC+, so there's the next half hour of my evening.
This is a wonderful question and one I'll be following for myself, as well.

PyCon US starts this week! Are you local to the Long Beach area? There's a schedule (https://us.pycon.org/2026/schedule/) packed full of talks, tutorials, open spaces, and many other events to connect with your Python communities. Find out more and join us at https://us.pycon.org/2026/attend/information/!
I have recently doubled down on some travel gear, and it has made trips over the last few months quite a bit more pleasant. Of note, I can recommend a travel pillow, a dedicated outfit for plane days, and modern noise-cancelling headphones (my last ones were showing their age and had already had several ear pad replacements).
📺️ Taskmaster
Back home and catching up on a couple of episodes.
I am following a particular mastodon thread that is quite amusing. I'm tempted to participate but fear that some of the references might go over my head.

It is still very tech-heavy (and Python in particular), but our topics are the organizing side of things, which is almost always pretty separate from the subject matter of any given conference or meetup. If you're a community organizer looking for other folks with that experience, there's a good chance that one of us has an experience to share, or at least a helpful outside perspective. I am, of course, biased, but I think it's a wonderful group to be a part of. https://www.conferencechats.org
I am revisiting pdfpc after a number of years away from it. Not quite like riding a bike, but I am pretty quickly falling back into the workflow and why I find it comfortable as someone who spends a lot of time in a terminal-based text editor.
If you're attending PyCon US (you should!), this is the last call to book your hotel at the discounted conference rate. Staying at the conference hotel is always fun, and it helps out the conference a ton.

@djspiewak@fosstodon.org Defaults matter. Why not make this work in a better and safer way out of the box?
📺️ Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing
Sometimes, winding down with a fishing show is what one needs.

@kati@fosstodon.org You should have, yes. If you didn't, let me know, and I can follow up once PSF staff is back in office.

@mahryekuh I could probably rattle off a few more, but the common element is that we're working to make the presentation go as well and as smoothly as it can, and there's a reason I have loaner laptops and boxes full of adapters to connect pretty much any laptop to any projector.

@andrewnez@mastodon.social @cthoyt@scholar.social Thanks for the link. I appreciate your work and have read a bunch of your blog but think I missed this post. I'm not surprised that you've already written it and will share it with folks (in the hope that they are informed by it and share their own perspectives on why they want these features, too).

@mahryekuh One more for good measure: this is less common now than it used to be, and less common in tech community events, but printed slides for the audience is a thing.

@drewbrew@mastodon.cloud Is that what they call the cash register at The Container Store?
I've only just learned of this rendition of Because The Night by Garbage and Screaming Females, and it's every bit as great as you'd expect it to be https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tOmKGjy-Ct0

Reality competition shows are not often a go-to genre for me, but A Very Haunted Renovation has my attention.

@coderanger@cloudisland.nz To add more confusion to the mix, The Hallmark Channel tells me it's Christmas in July. Split the difference and call it Thanksgiving maybe?
Did we ever figure out why, exactly, Moses supposes erroneously?
Tomorrow! The next @ConferenceChats@mastodon.social group video call. Interesting in conference / community organizing? Find details and the Discord invite link to join us at https://www.conferencechats.org.
