We are so lucky enshittification took hold as late as it did. Imagine having to debug a 1990s PC with beep codes for 'the signing certificate on your graphics card ROM is expired' or having a PXE BIOS preboot network environmental to check your OS licence has not expired

Canada should plant extensive cannabis groves in high fire risk areas near the US border. It won't stop the smoke but the USAians will be a bit more chill when it happens

This is your periodic reminder that all the code you browse via the web UI of something like a #git repository doesn't necessarily match what you get via a git clone. In fact it's really easy to serve a trojan that's only in the git clone view so if you need to inspect code do it on the pulled copy.
Of course I can also only serve the trojan version to selected IP ranges matching a given corporation too. Isn't supply chain trust fun !

@ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk Same as the link between violence and radicalisation from Prevent
"While not directly comparable, researchers said Office for National Statistics data for 2018/19 indicates that 5.7 per cent of the population were victims of domestic abuse – while victims made up 15.4 per cent of Prevent referrals they analysed."
Same story, same sort of numbers, other side of the hate coin.

@chu@climatejustice.social @MaryAustinBooks@mstdn.social @MisuseCase@twit.social It needs to be a pre university thing I think. There's a common theme living in a university town that students get into messes with the stuff they weren't allowed before they arrived.
Those whose parents banned alcohol totally get drunk, those who have no experience in other things go off the deep end there whatever it is (money, food, ...) as there's nobody around to keep them on the level.

It's the cigarette company "it's ok if its a dangerous addictive drug and you just ban children using it" trick, and I'd like to say the politicians fell for it, but they are so in bed with the techbros in the UK that they are probably totally aware of the script.

I was trying to put together a summary of why #AI code s banned from Fuzix
Having thought about it a bit I realised it can be put several ways but it really already been said by Marx (and Engels), and to be fair also the same basic beliefs in many other groups:
"The workers should own the means of production"
LLM #AI, aside from all the stolen content and environmental damage is not owned by the workers. It's no different to depending upon an proprietary compiler someone can take away.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social It started going wrong after COBOL. No buffer overflows, no memory leaks.
Rust is bizarre in that I don't think there's anything in the rust safety stuff that isn't permitted in C as an implementation detail. A pointer is just an object handle and offset (except function pointers which are just handles without offset). Malloc/free are a library option. So it ought to have been possible to just make C safe instead.
Bash is a nasty bloated mess. The bourne shell is a thing of beauty

@datenwolf@chaos.social @freakboy3742@cloudisland.nz I think that depends on the audience. When I was giving talks outside the UK I often quite intentionally added more text (and slides) because for a 2nd/3rd/.. language speaker it's common especially in tech that they are strong in written but not spoken form.
Making copies of the materials available in advance also works wonders, and unlike university lecturers your listeners might actually have read through them.

Some days I wonder how many resources we could save if we instead taught people some basic understanding of safety.
All those manuals that start with 35 pages of "do not attempt to eat your router", "do not place product in the microwave", "do not operate in a room filled with petrol vapour" could be so much smaller. I mean it's not like the kind of people who try and eat their router actually read the manual in the first place anyway.

More baby steps on UK plug in #solar
Core of the interim standard is basically DIN VDE V0126-95 with tweaks for the UK.
Max 800W per house, doesn't yet cover batteries but otherwise really isn't terribly interesting.

@CableSt@mastodon.social our local councillors are basically a little independent group. They do all this stuff properly including going round checking drains in the rain and organising stuff getting fixed. The other parties consider the seats impossible to take.
This is great advice and it might turn some of these people who signed up to reform in a misguided attempt to fix Britain into actual responsible humans when they see how the world really works.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange @campuscodi@mastodon.social real question is where the data actually goes. If it's just within the box beeping at you to wake you up before you kill someone then rather less of a deal.
Most of this is not on micro mobility because as I understand it a quad bike is conveniently exempt, and allowed around town in many EU and UK just not on motorways. Also they tend to be built to a price point where there's no spying kit not even an entertainment system just a phone holder

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @ReggieHere@mastodon.social @ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk the air to air grant is basically useless according to all the Aircon folks I know. It forces you to remove gas entirely so change water heating. It stops you migrating bit by bit and just the overheads of the MCS stuff and this will cost way more than a grant.
Unlike the air water farce it's a long established industry with normal priced equipment sold globally and not pushed up by grants.

@baldur@toot.cafe When many years ago EU government started supporting open source the US sent messages to their embassies telling them to fight it. We know this because a copy of the messages "fell off the back of an embassy". It's been ongoing for a long time and it really is time that the US got to the "and find out" stage.
It goes beyond software - US mdelling is why you now can't get cars repaired (no third party parts viable) and more.
Trump may yet prove to be the "useful idiot" the world needed
