Sounds like Meta may be building a universal face database.
Why do I think this?
Well, because a Meta spokesperson has told WIRED,
"One decision we can be clear about—we are not building a universal face database.”

I can't understand why Facebook isn't being banned by countries outside of the USA for all the same reasons that the US banned TikTok....

Exactly. It's not perfect (as the number of stuck-off doctors proves), but it's better than nothing and it allows employees to refuse to perform certain tasks for their employers if they conflict with expected professional standards.

Yes, it's basically the bit of paper that lets employers and customers know that you can do your job, and most come with a set of ethical principles that members must abide by.
This last part is what's largely missing from the privately-operated certification schemes.

Radical thinking.
Perhaps someone should organise a global class action for corporate theft?

That's certainly a fair accusation against private company certifications, but membership of professional bodies is intended to guarantee a standard of ethical behaviour, even if individuals occasionally fall foul of the rules.
In LL's case, there is an ethical code for nurses (https://www.nmc.org.uk/standards/code/) and transgressors will be 'struck off' and unable to work in that profession again.

True, but while we're all talking about the lack of profits and wondering what AI's killer application will be, these companies are quietly (and not so quietly) collecting vast amounts of public and private data on everything from historical academic text to people's shopping habits and social circle.
It's possible that data collection and the onward sale and exploitation of that data for marketing, surveillance, dynamic pricing, etc *is* AI's killer app.

Hard to disagree with this, but as others have said it's likely to affect SMEs far more than big business, and big business could in turn support the move as a means of removing competition and forcing home workers back to air conditioned offices.
Execution will be as important as intention here.

Suspect that we're on the cusp of 'rewriting history to serve ideology' being turbocharged by AI.
We may even end up without a decent grasp on the present.

Nationalising AI to a fascist-adjacent government is plainly a bad idea, but socialising it to break up corporate knowledge monopolies and prevent the commercial exploitation and gatekeeping activities remains a sensible goal.

I blame Nick Clegg for the AV referendum. His one job in that coalition was to force a referendum on PR, and he conceded to Cameron's AV.
Yet another example of public interest being binned when politicians from posh schools sit down together.

All far-right parties are essentially conservative parties that pretend to support working people, usually as a pre-emptive means of preventing those working people supporting socialist and social democrat parties that might actually change the economic status quo.
The current batch of dubiously-funded far-right parties in Europe fit the pattern perfectly.

This is undeniably true for the USA currently because it's a systemic two party state with a near impossible bar to entry for new parties.
That's not to say that the Dems are great because they'd be a party of the centre-right in Europe, but I wonder how much of the anti-Dem rhetoric on here is encouraged by Europeans who have better left-wing options available.

This will only get worse as AI gets better at reproducing human artefacts and humans start to adopt AI mannerisms and extracts in their original work.
The potential for misinformation on a global scale is huge and examples of deliberate attempts to manufacture new 'truths' are already in the wild.

There's a lot of ideology involved, and UK mainstream politicians have adopted the wrong one for public service provision.
One of the points made here is imposition of 17 autonomous regions in the NHS, presumably installed to break up a public sector monopoly without considering the economies of scale that gave the NHS much of it's value.

80 MPs and Lords sounds like a lot, but in reality it's relatively tiny in comparison with the proportion of the electorate that support sanctions.
The views of citizens are routinely ignored in Western liberal democracies.
