@woe2you@beige.party @afewbugs@social.coop I can’t speak to biology, but in physics it’s absolutely impossible to jump to the most “true” theory… and even if you do it’s not very useful. Although really everything is made of quantized fields, that doesn’t explain billiards. Although we live in curved spacetime, that doesn’t help understand how a pendulum swings. The detail is impossible to understand without basics couched in relatable terms.

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange I get why so many people want to weigh in. I do, and I don’t even use rust, let alone contribute. But right now we have a war for the Overton window. Tech bro allies want the window to exclude ethical and environmental and safety concerns and center on inequality being the default position, which is shown in many of those posts. Others want the default to be AI-free and introducing it only after it has proven to be good. I’m in that camp and want to vote.

@cap_ybarra In my last job I was pulled into an all-faculty meeting. President of the college then told us that the few-percent retirement contribution "temporarily paused" a couple of years ago was permanent and no one had ever said it was temporary. I walked out. I was surprised to find myself the only one.

@richlv @fj @reloadedhead First and foremost: large vehicles are safer for the people in them, but much less safe for those around them. They crush smaller cars. Small children cannot be seen if close to the front. The headlights blind me when one of these is behind me in the road. They block sight lines. I think that wanting a big truck is basically anti-social. This goes double for cybertrucks.

@Heartofcoyote @cap_ybarra Actually I'm a big believer in education, and I feel proud of the work I did; I don't think most higher ed is "BS". That said, university should be free and easy to get into. The crippling loan system is terrible.

@richlv @fj @reloadedhead One thing we see in the US is a continual arms race to bigger and bigger vehicles, partly due to this “safer than thou” mentality, partly machismo. But when it’s normalized, narrow streets start to be seen as the problem instead of the vehicles. The streets become one-way, parking is terrible, the roads are torn up by the extra weight. And you never, ever see any cargo being carried.

But in my experience, the policy is set elsewhere, as are the adjunct pay rates. And this will be true as long as people are willing to be adjuncts for those pay rates.

@donlamb_1@mastodon.online @cpkimber@scicomm.xyz I love Taylor’s books. When I set out to teach Classical I went back to the text I was taught from and figured out how to teach Lagrangians. Then I read three or four texts to see how they did it. Taylor’s layout matched mine almost perfectly. Concentrates on the “what” more than the theoretical justifications.

@celesteh @Mr0 @albertcardona Just to add: US universities are right now suffering from the lack of foreign students, and it's going to absolutely cripple this country in ways few can forsee. Besides devastating science other academic work, it's linked to many fewer skilled people immigrating. This was an easy way for the rabid right to mean we are going to soon no longer be science and technology leaders. They really believe prosperity is a divine gift.

@futurebird@sauropods.win Grades are a useful lever but also a crutch. There are two problems the address in my mind: students who want the degree but don’t want to learn, and student who want to learn but don’t believe that the work will help them. Both are easily moved with a little incentive. But the era of the LLM suddenly changes the cheating cost to reward ratio. I’m glad I’m not teaching anymore…
