If Recall had gone into widespread use by millions of users unchallenged and then become the most successful info stealer of all time, that might have cost MicroSlop Billions. Ransomware crews would have had a much easier time.
If they had abandoned it earlier, that would have saved money and embarrassment.

The reason this happens is because nothing was done to prevent it in the past.
Attempting to change an entrenched working practice is most difficult.
If you let an employer treat you like a door mat then they will walk over you.
If they refused then the system would change.

Random comments from me would be If you take existing C code that is licensed under the GPL and rewrite or translate it into Rust, your Rust code is considered a derivative work under copyright law.
The GPL would therefore seem to apply.
If you go to the source algorithm and reimplemented it from scratch then you would probably need a clean room implementation.
