Asahi fork embraces LLMs and lands Linux on the M4 Mac mini
https://www.theregister.com/os-platforms/2026/09/25/asahi-fork-embraces-llms-and-lands-linux-on-the-m4-mac-mini/5298931

There are reasons to dislike this development, but I want to highlight something that #AI critics purposely ignore. Many FOSS projects (ours included) are under serious competitive pressure from ones that are less scrupulous with their AI usage policies. Or outright vibe coded.

This announcement says nothing about the quality of the resulting code. Instead, it advertises new features. What will users pick?

I sometimes half-jokingly wonder if any foreigners actually learn German, or do they also just get by somehow? Like, I know a guy from the USSR who went to school here, and he still doesn't speak well.

FFS I'm tired from reading takes like this (#gitlab). "Human in control" only works if you use AI as a fine tool: carefully and only when benefits are clear. For agentic development, it's bullshit company leaders tell each other to make their strategy seem plausible.

The key problem is that in the agentic development world humans will quickly unlearn to understand first the code, then the architecture. You cannot be an architect without hands-on experience. Best case, you'll be a mediocre PM.

@RogerBW@discordian.social @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange these are fair points, but you need to keep in mind that not every chat room is designed for high stakes conversations. Offline parallel: you're applying the security standards of a revolutionary cell to a comic convention or a book club. Which would be fine if it did not lead to significantly degraded user experience.

@mhoye@cosocial.ca our folks for access to its preview and run it on our projects. The outcome is not groundbreaking, but more than half of the reported issues were legit concerns, even if only very few were actual vulnerabilities.

My body hated the idea of returning to regular cardio today so much that it woke me up with a debilitating calf cramp. Now even getting the daily steps in will be a challenge.

How's your morning going?

An example. There was a recent article proving that AI, if let to process its own outputs, cannot reach superintelligence. Quite the opposite. And that was proven mathematically (or so I understood, I'm not an actual smart person). Has anyone put thoughts into how it applies on smaller scale, i.e. on agents being left more or less alone on software, with only design guidance from humans? Can it be seen as a proven fact that the code will turn into chaos? Or is it likely but who knows?

@TimothyRoes @khleedril @K4mpfie @ErikJonker @soulsource @pojntfx because our industry LOVES overengineering solutions for (sometimes imaginary) technological problems and hate bothering with social impact of our decision. As a result, more attention is given to the rare and largely harmless problem "a gifted child hacking her phone to bypass restrictions" than to the real and already occurring "Trump can disconnect me from half of the Internet" or "big tech spies on me for profit".

@mo@mastodon.ml @pq1r@tech.lgbt @eunews@mastodon.social do people love it or are they required to? Race and ethnicity could also appear on documents, and they're used to in some places. This is a great win, but it's solving a problem that shouldn't have existed in the first place because someone's gender is nobody's fucking business.

We were proud but lonely in our isolated corners of the world. And then we realized, to the greatest dismay, that the world had moved on from us. That nearly everyone was still using the horrifying social networks we left, for their desire for communication and entertainment was stronger. And we kept asking ourselves if that crazy suggestion to take control of the problem instead of running from it would have resulted in a better world. Nobody knew. The tale is about AI. 2/2

@iju@mastodon.social @kayo77@infosec.exchange @spillanemike@mastodon.ie I surely don't need to explain that a decent car (granted, not a subcompact one) works reasonable well on snow to someone from FINLAND of all places. Even with bikes, the problem is probably not with several centimeters of snow itself, it's just too slippery.

@dimllychlyngarw@troet.cafe @onekind@beige.party @zoy@merveilles.town this is just a dump of your favorite stereotypes about LLM. If you suddenly want your point to be understood by a varied audience, including people who may be prejudiced against you, you have no option than to polish it. If you cannot do it (e.g. because you're not a native speaker) and cannot afford paying for it, LLMs are your next best choice. "Let's accept imperfect texts" is a great idea but wishful thinking in reality. Try it with your big boss.

@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu thank you for taking time to respond! I'm aware of these efforts and find them exceptionally valuable (and yes, we are the first!). I'm worried about the USA and its Big Tech trying to blackmail you (and us all) into weakening the protections for their profits by using tariffs and other threats. I think I'll voice a popular opinion on Fediverse if I say that we got your back and we urge you not to surrender to their demands.

@tomw@mastodon.social @RMKrug@hachyderm.io @geospacedman@mastodon.social I'm just as annoyed by AI imagery (anywhere) as you all, but what you say is pure prejudice. Not only is there no correlation even among IT specialists (yes, I've seen otherwise very high quality presentations that used AI images a lot). But also we here in our bubble keep forgetting that the majority of the population is hardly aware of the problems with generative AI at all. Voted no for this reason.

@joachim@boitam.eu now a serious answer to a less than serious take. "AI" is a bunch of matrix multiplications, it can't "be over". The idea of LLMs specifically fits into one rather short paper. OpenAI may be making its last breaths now, but Gemini and Copilot belong to companies that are too large to fail. Anthropic will be saved by acquisition, most likely. Open weight models are just files and won't disappear, and that's a good thing. We could use them to take power from the big tech. If we cared.

@jwcph @Ponygirl just like nobody has proven that woodworking machines can be useful, right? 😉 (yes, you fell victim of your own analogy) It's not even remotely hard to prove that LLMs are useful (refactoring, difficult rebases, generating skeletons for projects, etc), anyone who honestly tried them knows that. Their problems are ethical, political, environmental and financial. LLMs (esp. frontier ones) are unsustainable, whether they work or not.

I still used an old Nokia back in the days when my account was already authorized by a smart card connected to my (Linux) laptop.
