Fedi, I need help! Our visitor is asymptomatic for Flu A. I know more about covid quarantine than flu, what can you tell me about incubation periods, test times, does it show up on OTC tests (we used metrix to get this result,) how long until not contagious, is there a drug to prevent us from getting flu, etc? We have 2 long covid people in our home and I have severe MECFS. Note: we know quarantine protocol, I just need flu specific info. #AskFedi #disability #medical #boost

There are plenty of verified Gaza accounts and mutual aid posts, if you do feel like donating, but you do a lot already in your community. Mutual aid really is "if you can," so don't worry. I boost posts or sometimes make one for a friend, so if you don't want to see those, feel free to block the # mutualAid hashtag and that should make sure you don't see them. 💜 you definitely have enough on your plate.

@ana I also just feel like computers work differently from brains? So even if they achieve sentience, they would just be different? I guess I don't understand the obsession with comparing all other intelligence to that of people as though humans are *it.* there are tons of animals out there and they're intelligent, and they're just living their best life out there. We still don't understand their minds. Why do we assume we would understand this any better? Why can't it just live its best life?

@vlrny@disabled.social I wonder. I was sickly from the time I was born and disabled from around the time I was 24, 25? So I always knew the medical system, and that it was fallible. I think I was a lot less aware of chronic illnesses like POTS and MECFS, and that there wasn't anything much that could be done for them? As in, it wasn't that I feared disability, so much as, I didn't know what disability actually looked like, in a wider sense. ->

@ana yeah, and I'm all for learning and studying and science, but it is also okay to not 100% understand things. There is wonder in mysteries and there is something really amazing in having a connection with an animal friend even though we don't share a spoken language, we still communicate, we understand each other in a way. Sigh. I guess the technocrats with boundary issues probably wouldn't understand that.

@vlrny@disabled.social my birthmom only had one leg and had a crushed pelvis, and that's why I was adopted, since dealing with a baby with that sort of nerve damage would have been miserable, and yet she only got disability benefits when I was an adult. So I was aware of how shitty the system is, in many ways. I just wasn't aware of how invisible illness can hit you in your mid 20s and just take your life away and the way there is just no sympathy for that. I wasn't prepared to be a pariah.

I knew someone who went into $10k in debt over a single game, which closed down super soon after it opened, so this was a very short time window. It is basically a differently presented slot machine. Back when I was a volunteer mod for one of those companies, I was told it was common practice in the industry to refuse to ban big spenders - people spending $1K+/mo. And the incentives to spend just kept coming.

And solidarity with all of you that have endured this hell.

I sort of wonder if the value of the knowledge gained is worth whatever pain we might have put them through - we just can't know what they feel. And I don't know that it's our choice to make. I try to interfere as little as I can, move creatures outside, be as gentle as possible. Personally I couldn't cut legs off ants for science. I hope the knowledge does something useful in the future. But I doubt it will benefit antkind. Which sort of sucks.

People have different reactions, but it's verrrry different to the invisible illness thing. I *look* unwell, so folks no longer question my disability creds. I have some feelings about that. Mostly I'm tired so I'm relieved? Partly I'm annoyed. Kind of bemused. I try to avoid abled folks in the wild.

So I think we know whose side they're on. They're eugenicists who seriously don't seem to realize that humans have almost no genetic diversity. :BlobCat_Facepalm: there just is no sense to any of it. Bigotry and violence, that's the point. But, basically, yes. They just might. Without irony.

Hopefully more servers are becoming aware of the behavior, so the accounts will be taken down faster as well, or at least blocked by the well moderated servers. 😬 a lot of them just use @'s now since so many folks have turned off dm's. I think it's more like, women are so busy working, carrying emotional burdens, doing domestic labor, etc, that there's a sort of emotional exhaustion that goes with that. I never had the cry on someone's shoulder friendship. I was always exhausted from working and just. Trying to keep things together. Nobody had time for girl's nights. I wish I had a way to express that they are having a pretty normal experience. I worry I will sound awful.

As soon as it was enacted, there were mysterious articles being mad about it even though it seemed to be a popular policy. And that is always fishy. So this sounds like a bought study, which is to be expected when some wealthy asshole gets mad. Now it will be cited in a bunch of places, but I bet its funding will be real ambiguous and its methods questionable.

I was actually thinking about you and @Chloeg@mastodon.art today because I went out rolling with my partner and dogs, our short walks end at the lowest point in our neighborhood, which floods occasionally and therefore has tons of woods and greenery. My cell phone doesn't quite capture it, but I thought geez, if I had the energy I would absolutely paint this. And I tend to think of you both when I see natural views like that, because of the lighting and color and just. 🥰

Or at least, it isn't something I ever experienced in my life. I'm autistic/NB, so maybe it's just me?

The ad industry has normalized the mindset that we should expect to see ads in exchange for free content. Maybe we shouldn't just accept that. Obviously not everyone can always afford to tip, but it might happen more without ad culture.

@odr_k4tana@infosec.exchange me to keep my screen dim enough without suddenly flashing brighter, to keep webpages flipped into darkmode using Firefox's dark reader add-on, which many websites break (and some pieces of websites, causing flashing,) and yes, this means I have to use ad blockers, because ads are some of the worst for forced flashing and auto playing videos with extremely bright lights, which are dangerous for me (yet another thing many tech bros dislike. Ad blockers). Life is varied and strange.

I would just be wondering, since I would expect most amusement parks to have noise levels that wouldn't be comfortable for me anyway, whether the noise level listed was above or below the base level of the park. Do you happen to know? I don't know if this is your photo, if it is, maybe you saw at the entrance whether it said what the noise levels were generally, maybe it's monitored somehow? 🤔 If not, no worries 😅 I'm just curious.

It really is interesting, too, especially learning about the ways folks using assertive tech have to get around various types of "security features" and whatnot, personally I have migraines and seizures so I've been fighting Samsung's UI (their S series are the only screens my eyes can tolerate, but their UI is VERY restrictive), plus many website "designs" to allow ->

@odr_k4tana@infosec.exchange just having read down the thread some, I want to thank you for this comment, having been born in the 80's and been discouraged from studying coding beyond basic HTML/CSS despite loving it because computer science "was for boys." I graduated in 2004, and went to a very fancy high school, and this was still the attitude. It literally changed the course of my life, and now I'm cognitively disabled (long covid). Usability DOES matter, and not always for the reasons folks assume.
