You all make fun of the goose with the golden eggs, but "the value is in the goose" is something that game studios and other tech companies doing mass layoffs, thinking that their franchises are their biggest assets, apparently still don't get

I guess that could work if you really investigate all the fundamental mistakes, as well as the regular bugs/pitfalls, from the first time and try your best to avoid them.
Assuming that "it was written in a less safe language" was the only or even most important issue is.. not that useful

A simple sign will be added, saying:
This is not a place of honor.
No highly esteemed deed is commemorated here.
Nothing valued here.
What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us.
This message is a warning about a danger.
The danger is to the mind, and it can kill.
The danger is unleashed only if you substantially disturb this place physically. This place is best shunned and left uninhabited.

Additional fun thought: I can imagine they avoided looking at the GNU coreutils C implementation because they are using MIT license instead of GPL.

No, the problem here is not (only) user-generated packages.
I mean that can be problematic by itself, but this is worse: The specific problem here was that abandoned (orphaned) packages could just be taken over by someone else without any(?) checks.
This means that even if you vetted an AUR package when you first installed it, you can get an infected package from someone else when you update it.

I probably should've mentioned that this image is from https://www.thepresentshop.co.uk/pre-personalised-c123/pre-personalised-gifts-occupations-hobbies-c103/great-indoors-tin-mug-9-p156387
(no idea if that's where my friend got the mug from, and currently it's out of stock anyway)

As fatigue (up to extreme Chronic Fatigue Syndrom) is a common long COVID symptom (incl. measurable decline of fitness) I don't think that's "just" a mental issue due to lack of dopamine - that virus often damages many parts of the body.
The combination of decreased physical fitness and memory/concentration/executive issues probably is pretty depressing and prevents ADHD-style stimulation that could otherwise make up for the lack of dopamine

Yeah, of course - it's just a noteworthy difference that long COVID also comes with apathy and fatigue, so it's probably worth investigating why the lack of Dopamine can have such different results.
(Maybe the fatigue-part has additional reasons like a fucked up lung that can't provide as much oxygen anymore)

I'm totally aware of this :)
The original post mentioned nvidia as part of the tech industry that knows it doesn't work and yes, they are, but unlike the others they make big money with this.
(Though to a lesser degree so do other HW vendors and OTOH also software companies selling AI consulting or services where their customers pay for tokens or hardware.. yeah, pyramid scheme comes to mind)

yeah, that would be the reasonable thing - you could even just copy their comments over at such critical places (assuming they have any), or port their code 1-to-1 as far as feasible and refactor to be more rusty afterwards

But to be clear: that they completely ignore the original code was just a (plausible, IMHO) theory of mine - I'm not familiar with their workflow.
Could be they had someone to clean-roomy look at the original source, or looked at it themselves because it's a different language, yolo, and just weren't thorough enough, I don't know.

err yeah, kinda - I temporarily mixed up C standard lib implementation and coreutils 🙃
but for some coreutils tools there's a similar C function (e.g. mkfifo) that likely has to do the same things to avoid race conditions and such

but things like PCRE2 are probably not that critical here, at least if there is some PCRE2-compatible regex implementation for rust that can be used there.
At least looking at that posts about the CVEs, the critical knowledge is what system calls to use in what order with what arguments to avoid race conditions when creating files and such (and setting their permissions)

sure, but needs more people, and some of them won't get to do the fun part (writing new code)
they could've looked at musl though, I assume it does not have the same bugs (but am too lazy to check)

But then again, when the bubble bursts it will also hit nvidia hard, both by deflating their stock price and from cancelled orders and bankrupt customers who can't pay their bills anymore

This is the first time I've heard about that.
I think when people take it recreationally it's common (and more appropriate) to just call it "Speed"

yeah.. I have lots of nostalgia for small-ish communities around forums, which was common about 20 years ago - but nonsensical rules enforced by moderators who seem to enjoy their power is something I could do without
(usually forums that disallow "necroposting" also have rules of "use the forum search before you post" 🤡)

the problem with that is that you can't guarantee that LLM-driven NPCs won't start behaving in undesirable ways, like spewing out racist slurs. this probably makes it impossible to get your game released on any halfway controlled platform, maybe even including Steam

It's not deterministic, LLMs generally aren't.
Model's can't be trained exclusively on a small set of data, they all are trained on *massive* amounts of data and then tweaked with additional specialized training.
The safety filters of providers of LLMs-as-a-service fail all the time.
You can't really bind them to a scenario, see for example chatbots of fastfood chains abused to write python code and stuff like that

AFAIK the main reason for buying and destroying them is not scanning them (many of them are digitized already) but some questionable legal argument of "we didn't steal the content, look here, we legally bought the book (and destroyed it because who has space for all those books)"

ADHD is not typically connected to apathy, at least unless you add enough depression to the mix.. but yeah, there are definitely similarities.
I wonder how those long COVID patients would react to amphetamines or methylphenidate

yeah, but internet without a proper search engine sucks.. and creating a new one that finds all the relevant information of the last decades (but ideally not the slop) won't be easy
BUT - maybe it could be done with the data of archive.org?
would have further advantage of finding pages that are down
well, and something that indexes current relevant stuff, which, given the avalanche of slop on the current net, would best be curated by humans
