@wordstitcher@thecanadian.social @AnnieBuddy@thecanadian.social I think we should be charging them a lot more for the privledge, if it's going to happen at all. And I don't mean the outfitters should charge, I mean the taxes and fees paid should be higher, money into the tax base and into Ministry of Natural Resources, and money straight back to First Nations.

Like, if the hunting doesn't even happen on "First Nations land" (joke that *that* is!), but increased fees on Americans just get distributed to First Nations, for them to use as they please.

@luckytran@mastodon.social I wish I could remember who said it, but the point was made very early on (and it applies to so many other things) that, if we do enough to mitigate, then it will look to some like we did too much. When it's effective, and there's little result, then having done so much seems like overkill, when the only reason there was little result because you did so much.

Okay, yeah, it's suddenly cooler out. Fall weather, definitely.
But chick, I think you might be overdoing it with your knit toque and scarf. It's 15°C, not 5.

@dbattistella@mstdn.ca This is heartbreaking and disgusting. When I have a book in my possession that awful, full of bad information or worse, even then I can't bear to destroy it. I'm of German background--the idea of destroying books hits pretty close to home, and it gives me feels.

Sometimes, labour rights can only be gained or retained by breaking the law. Doing what they won't let you do--but *together*--is how labour rights happened in the first place.

The library's got nothing. The bookstore (physical)'s got nothing. The bookstore (online)'s only got very expensive or entirely useless books. I even tried Amazon, which is how I ended up with this piece of garbage that's just printed PowerPoint slides.
Can anyone recommend some free online learning resources for coding/programming? I want to learn Pascal.

@vlrny@disabled.social I lived without a/c. I caught hundreds of grasshoppers and leaf-hoppers in my grandmothers grass, one at a time (and let them go again, of course). I never knew a place than flooded. I never knew a place that burned. I never knew a place that had a drought. Southern Ontario seemed somehow insulated from all of those extremes. When a tornado went through near Barrie, it was a big enough deal that they wrote books about it.

@ajn142@infosec.exchange I'm wondering if it could be an artifact of how questions were phrased, or responses collected. Someone who'd never had to think about executive function before might refer to their reactions to things in life as "seeming to not care to do anything", which could be recorded as apathy. @Doomed_Daniel@mastodon.gamedev.place @currentbias@zeroes.ca

I've gotten used to the idea of messing up my back in my sleep. Roll over into a bad position, stay there for a couple of hours, easy. I don't like it, but at least I understand it.
But today I woke up fine. But by the time I left for work an hour later, my lower back on one side was a little tight. It's just gotten worse and worse through the day. Pills aren't helping. Heat isn't helping. No comfortable position to sit. This sucks.
And I still don't know what I did to it.

@plzupgrademe@fedi.txw.ca Collingwood, Duntroon, Singhampton for me. Never heard of a one until my mother basically drove through the big Barrie one. We were living in Singhampton at the time, and she was taking computer classes in Orillia and coming home on the weekends. Later when I lived in Bolton, I worked at the library, and that's where I saw the book about the Barrie deal. @vlrny@disabled.social

My cable/internet company knows about my thermostat, by brand name. I don't recall connecting it to our wifi. I specifically told the guy installing it that I didn't want that. The only stated purpose of it being connected to the wifi is for us to put apps on our phone to change the temperature away from the wall. We've never installed those apps, we don't want them.
So what data is being sent that my ISP knows about my thermostat, and where is it being sent?
They named several of our devices, which were accurate, though they missed six others. But somehow, among the four they saw, one was the thermostat, as if it were online at that very moment. Why?

@zazzoo@mstdn.ca Ah, "Hoodlum Rock". A classic. And in 'KRP's long tradition of bringing actors back to play another role later (seriously, there's *a lot*), Michael Des Barres plays "Dog" here, and returns as new morning man Jack Allen in The New WKRP in Cincinnati in '91 (which didn't last long, and--I've seen it--I'm not surprised).

Sam Anderson plays airheaded DJ Rex Erhardt and the immigration agent they take Ivan to see (he also has a role in The New that I can't find right now). There are more.

@zazzoo@mstdn.ca There's a tiny clip I've been searching for as a reaction gif for years now. Way back, WKRP in Cincinnati. The station is hosting a concert by a new punk band, "Scum of the Earth". They like to be wild and crazy, so any time they get tired of someone or they don't like his answer about something, they toss him out a window or from a moving car, saying "Well, that's it for him, then!"
Boy George? AI? Pro-genocide? Well, that's it for him, then!

Hey @crispius, there's a term on the tip of my tongue that's just not coming to me, and I bet you know what I'm thinking of.
IIRC, you take an old PC or something, you set it up in a certain way, and you put it between your home WiFi and your ISP connection. Increase privacy, strip out ads, that kind of stuff. Or maybe it's done with a Raspberry Pi? What am I thinking of?
