@zl2tod@mastodon.online @Phil_Tanner@mastodon.philtanner.com @SimonCHulse@mastodon.nz @AdminKirsty@infosec.space the idea for the last few years has been to go to the local civil defence site https://cdsouthland.nz/ rather than a nationwide one because people on the ground are likely to have a better idea what's going on. But yes this is what those "back office staff" actually do - the ones that the muppets in the slopalition are trying to get rid of because the clueless oiks have no idea what it is they actually do.

Racism and politics
I'm still chuckling at Shame Jones' attempt to do a racism and how badly it's backfiring on him. As far as racisms go, it is (possibly quite appropriately) the weakest of weak sauce. Butter chicken is (famously) very mild, basically just chicken stewed in cream and coloured with turmeric. There is - NOTHING - scary about it. It's a very nice meal, but hot and/or spicy it ain't. If there was a literal tsunami of butter chicken on the horizon I'd be heading out to the beach with as many clean bowls, buckets and pots as I could find. A few years back there was an almost-chemist woo shop between my work and the closest car park. For a while, out in front of it were big displays of Super Good-For-You stuff: turmeric and apple cider vinegar. I figured out quickly that I could duplicate the (supposed) effects much more cheaply with a curry and a bottle of cider and get a decent meal as well as the Super Health Benefits. Tomorrow night is specials night at my local curry place and I might just vote with my feet. Might get a balti. Might get a bhuna. Might get a rogan josh. Might make a nod to my Scottish heritage and get a tikka masala. And hopefully none of Shame Jones' little shitbags will try to make trouble while normal people are queueing up for normal dinners. #Racism #NZPol #ButterChickenTsunami

Something slightly silly to end the weekend on. One problem with discussing West Indies cricket with people old enough to remember 1950 is that they remember silly songs about unexpected cricket victories which require a bit of careful hunting through YouTube to validate...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFl9x3XzKSw

(Lord Beginner and the Calypso Rhythm Kings - "Victory Test Match - Calypso" a.k.a "Victory Calypso" a.k.a. "Cricket, Lovely Cricket" a.k.a. "there was a calypso song about Ramadhin and Valentine, do you think you could find it on YouTube?")

@Shards@kind.social I only managed to get 18 because I never bothered with a Walkman and we didn't have a Blockbuster over here. I still actually do some of these (e.g. CDs, paper maps, own a dictionary, an encyclopaedia and a current telephone directory).

@tom_geraghty "It looks like a demonstration ship – one designed to satisfy an ego rather than to perform" ... in other words, a 17th-century Cybertruck? I mainly know about the Vasa because the Swedish post office released a set of stamps in 1969 featuring engravings on the ship and various of its carvings (the stamps themselves were designed by a very famous stamp engraver).

@georgepenney My understanding is that there are some parts of the country where it is dangerous to leave your car windows wound down on a hot autumn day, because if you do so, when you get back to the car you will find that someone has left you a bag of feijoas.

@fgrosshans@mathstodon.xyz @ShadSterling@mastodon.social @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social that would be more logical, but the international standard does it differently. I also remembered slightly wrong - the numbering is arithmetic, not geometric, so the size I thought would be 12A0 is actually 4096A0 .... Which would make the standard rather useless for anything larger than an extremely large sheet of paper, unfortunately. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_standard_paper_sizes

@FeloniousPunk the entire story of "1999" is "tomorrow we could be obliterated, but don't let that stop us from partying tonight". It''s also in the background of some of the Oils' 1980s output. "Hammer and the sickle, news is at a trickle, commisars are fickle but the stockpiles grow. Bombers keeping coming, engines softly humming, Stars and Stripes are running for their own big show. Another little flare up, storm brewed in a teacup, imagine any mixup and the lot would go" - "Read About It". "ICBM, SS20, they lie so dormant, they got so many" - "Minutes to Midnight", which isn't the only absolute classic 1980s track based on the doomsday clock. Geography class, about 1983, we did a quick assessment of what would happen to our town if the Russians decided to bomb a major strategic target about 20 km away. The results would not have been pretty, especially if there was a southerly blowing at the time.

One of the things I do in my day job is proof-read, re-word and fact-check matters of local history. I spent days trying to unpick a batch of information that simply didn't add up and couldn't be referenced. In the end it became apparent that someone had searched the internet for some background and believed the first things they read on those wretched AI overview search engine results.

@macross @DJDarren using that analogy... if I was in the market for a widget, and you were selling widgets, and I went to your store to buy a widget, and your store was cordoned off with a big NO ENTRY sign in front of it, I'd go and find another store that sold widgets. It may not be your fault. But it's the fault of Facebook for being a walled garden.
