@Brad_Rosenheim@climatejustice.social hey, I can go three ways defending this:

  • parents, or organizers, so not the G/T kids
  • dyslexia is orthogonal to giftedness
  • slide made at Late a.m., night before. By someone with a tbd list like a cvs receipt. Who ain’t getting paid. Whose co-volunteers let them down. I’m that last bit — we adhd types routinely commit but fail to finish.

@Brad_Rosenheim@climatejustice.social absolutely. My hot take: a good teacher need not be a genius. They’re wise. They’re guides / sherpas pointing learners along a safe path toward the cool treasure ahead. Yeah, some teachers need to be pwned. Some show themselves to be ‘damage to be routed around’. But from my side of the pedagogical table, curiosity and guardrails and mutual respect are crux to teaching g&t.

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange a few days ago I heated up a few spoonfuls of leftover rice pilaf as a late morning snack. Not two hours later, was hungry, grabbed leftover stir fry, the rest of the pilaf, some cabbage, some sweet/hot sauce and tossed them together, opened the microwave… ah, that’s why I’m hungry again so soon. Added first to second, tossed some more, stood stoicly at the microwave to not forget (again), and had a nice lunch.

@calcifer@masto.hackers.town bigger-pay’s charm is often cancelled by the responsibilities of managing. The principal charm is practicing ‘what matters to mgmt’ thinking, so that as one steps back to hands-on, one can manage one’s managers. I don’t mean that as manipulate. Just, hone in on what they value: status communication, no interpersonal strife/drama, early warning when tasks are at risk of not meeting goals or deadlines, good summaries that distill days of good work down into a memo… I was a good manager, and didn’t like chunks of it. I love being hands on and in the loop and no-drama.

@ApaulD@aus.social we’re dealing with centibillions.

I like your referencing, but minutes blurs for hundreds of billions, like Sheik Bonesaw/Musk/Putin/Zuck/Bezos/Etc. A hundred billion seconds ago is 1858 BCE, the middle Egyptian empire, and the Minoans on Crete are flourishing. A couple hundred billion gets us to the beginning of recorded history. Half of Americans have wealth enough to revisit (checks math) the day before yesterday. 124,000 seconds, or 34 hours.

A couple hundred billion minutes ago, 380,000 years, puts us to the early Neanderthal age. They went extinct 20 billion minutes ago. Several hundred people have $20B.

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social Shadow Hearings! If *ever* there was an apt time for dem congresscritters to convene (even without repub consent) a hearing, subpoena witnesses, review the leaked content AND any witness testimony (those publishing the leak, those suspected in the leak, those not suspected in the leak but In The Know, those recommending payoff, those not rejecting payoff as inappropriate ) in this hot mess, and let it dominate the news cycle, a $10B ‘settlement’ of a spurious greedy fucking lawsuit like this is that time. Don’t just insist on it being rejected. Also reject the case being worthy of being delayed until there isn’t a justice-department conflict of interest. So, when R’s get all fussy, one can say ‘if it’s valid, y’all should be willing to postpone until impartial.’

It doesn’t happen. Which, on deep consideration, gives me hope.

Yes, this needs remedy. Yes, the attention this is getting is a good way to force remedy. No, it’s neither legal nor ethical to brick other people’s stuff regardless of how fucked the vendor’s security is. And a mower isn’t even on my top-ten ‘lethally-insecure’ categories. Fire up some shodan queries and realize just how often crit infrastructure, medical devices, transport / traffic / port authority, military, or financial OT/IoT devices are weakly- or not-secured.

I’m more worried about bricking utilities or pacemakers than I am a few thousand noisesome 7mph mowers thwarted by a sudden 6” elevation change in their path. Out of topical curiosity and from owning an early Friendly Robotics mower, do these mowers use an electromechanical interrupt that brakes blades (eg, if lifted || bumper switches are tripped) ? That’s been a standard feature on robotic mowers for more than a decade. USA’s so litigious, brands gotta make folks work extra stupid to be able to even get fingers harmed, let alone the wee robozombie horde this envisions.

No child or puppies mowed down in their prepubescent prime. No Orwellian surveillance worse than what fucking Ring cams do, and far less than the civil liberties violated from Flock. $10 that the mowers can be secured without bricking ‘em. Tho the vendor may declare that a blanket voiding of warranty. Like I said at first, it’s dumpster juice - it’s just not an impending lethal risk. What’s the cop term? Exigent circumstances?

It’s a risk. So are smart stoves, kWh batteries, door cams, smart cars, and medical implants. Give a hacker free rein and we’ll see ways to turn any RF/IoT/ OT thing into something nefarious or delightful. It’s been about a decade since defcon had someone point out a bunch of modules scanning in-tire pressure sensors can track people. Now it’s LPR cams. But we compensate, we don’t brick a city’s shitty smart meters. We don’t set fire to pluggable cars or DoS them. Bricking appliances with a ‘folks can just have vendor fix’ is a ‘of all the doesn’t-happens, this happens the doesn’t-est’ kind of dick move and overreaction.
