I remember damage. Then escape. Fan of #crows, #StarTrek and the #Japanese language, among many other things. Currently posting one frog species per day. If I keep this up, I should be done in about 20 years. My toots are searchable.

RE: https://social.heise.de/@mho/116919055673881129 How bad was the heatwave in Germany at the end of June? The graph shows deaths in Germany throughout the year for the last 26 years. The red line is 2026. The very noticeable spike is the end of June.

I've decided on a new series of toots I'll call #SpellingBeef where I disagree with the verdict of the Spelling Bee game in the New York Times. I'll only refer to games that are already past. Here's yesterday's catch: sure, it might be an entry in the Urban Dictionary only, but it's such an applicable word in so many situations.

@TheVoidTLMB@social.vivaldi.net English wouldn't be English if it didn't have THREE words for "predicting the future by observing shoulder blades": scapulimancy, scapulomancy and spatulamancy. The first two are about looking at "a shoulder blade usually as blotched or cracked from a fire"; the third is about "an animal's shoulder blade." I can just imagine John the Blacksmith telling Anne the Baker that examining CRACKED shoulder blades just doesn't cut it; she needs to see the spatulamancer instead.

The late Senator Lindsey Graham's seat is now occupied by his sister, even though she's not a politician and the people didn't vote for her. There's a strong suggestion that something shady's going on, but the rules about this have a long history, and several Senators, on both sides of the aisle, have been replaced by non-politician loved ones (usually widows) in the past, some recently. If you criticize this, criticize the rule, not the instance, and propose how to fix it.

If you wonder which civilization was more advanced around 800 CE, Western Europe or the Middle East, read this excerpt from the Wikipedia article about Caliph Harun al-Rashid: "A Frankish mission came to offer Harun friendship in 799. Harun sent various presents with the emissaries on their return to Charlemagne's court, including a clock that Charlemagne and his retinue deemed to be a conjuration because of the sounds it emanated and the tricks it displayed every time an hour ticked."
