TC on IRC. "crazed container bastard". http://xkcd.com/2083/ ← this guy. Government certified extremist. 🏴🚩. Increasingly techno-amish. Pretty left-wing but also pretty low tolerance for language-policing. He/him.

@abbiistabbii@blahaj.zone 90% of the harm of something like Youtube could be mitigated just by forcing them to turn off the recommendation algorithm for whichever class of people you want to protect (you could make a good argument that baby boomers need to be in a sandbox too!)

@Richard_Littler@mastodon.social it's almost certainly utterly unworkable, but I've wondered about using something like Yggdrasil in combination with a web-of-trust-style vouching system to create a new, private internet.

@lianna @chirpbirb bailing out with an error message is hardly "making it crash" - and at the end of the day how hard is it to click the fork button and revert that change? Bearing in mind this software pretty much guaranteed to be used by people with development experience.

The Administrative Court has today handed down a significant judgment confirming the Environment Agency’s powers to prosecute former employees of Southern Water.
Four former employees from Southern Water, including the former Chief Executive Officer Matthew Wright, face a charge of conspiracy to defraud.

Yeah, addiction is a chemical state and the addicted therefore deserve sympathy and whatever help is available. The decision to indulge in addictive behaviour for the first time however, is entirely a conscious one and therefore deserves absolutely no respect. And actually advocating for and encouraging that behaviour.. is criminal.

@davep@infosec.exchange there's some suggestion they may have just correlated IPs with the GDID from Windows telemetry phoning home. It's all very murky.

@revk@toot.me.uk either dodgy mains or reality is starting to collapse. I was always rather taken with the concept in one of Greg Bear's novels that humans "over-observing" reality via technology might do weird things at the quantum level ..

@mohshbair there's a muscle that tightens the ear drum in order to protect your hearing in response to loud noises - trauma can very probably mess with that reflex, I imagine a war zone is exactly the sort of thing to screw it up :( If it's that then it should not be permanent at least. Fingers crossed for you x

@vikki@know.me.uk @Kristen@know.me.uk is it me or does this seem to be a particular thing for that generation? Incredibly self-centred / self-involved. /Their/ parents were not like that, generally, as I recall - they may have had all sorts of other faults, but they were usually interested in their own family / children, friends, etc.

@vikki@know.me.uk in times past such things were used to justify grand fascist takeovers of entire countries. It seems a bit .. sad .. if all you're going to exploit for is to justify your latest vanity project :( Apparently they don't even make tyrants like they used to!

@vikki@know.me.uk Hmm. I also resent it because I feel it offloads the "hard work" from the person who's initiated the communication onto the person who has to listen to it -- which for me means finding a quiet room so my APD stands a fighting chance, etc. But I guess it's OK if you know and consider the other person's preferences well. An ex-friend switched to communicating _only_ via voice notes without consideration, and that along with some other stuff ended up being a deal-breaker :(

I'd sort of been assuming it would be Israel crossing that Rubicon first, perhaps when they run out of interceptors, but either seems frighteningly plausible :(

@_aD looks like the systemd tooling is quite good now, but annoyingly machined doesn't support enumeration of the virtual users it creates, it seems :( https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/afb64f1f117028f26c027098c5ca292c07bd1285/src/machine/machined-varlink.c#L198

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange I'm old enough that there have been quite a few disasters etc around the UK in my lifetime. It's quite unnerving how often when randomly travelling around you see a place name and are reminded about such-and-such a rail crash (usually), or a particularly awful murder .. and of course Lockerbie :(
