:noted: Professionally, I am a freelancer mainly in the video game industry.

:accessibility: I'm autistic, queer and I have ADHD (medicated). My writing style sometimes might come across as cold or boring, but that's not how I mean it :( I'm quite silly actually

@Natasha_Jay@tech.lgbt This still implies that gender lies on a scale from male to female. The time of day is a limited linear scale measurable from 'full day' to 'full night' and everything inbetween. A much better analogy could be chemical elements. Hydrogen and helium are 99.9% of mass in the universe, and yet all the other elements exist in their own right and aren't just a rounding error.

After Bluesky, Threads, and so on, the whole #WSocial thing is another reminder that it was never about the #Fediverse being "too complicated" or "just for nerds". A bafflingly large amount of people genuinely only act on a gut feeling telling them that only commercial products with fancy marketing owned by a for-profit corporation can be trustworthy, 'official' and 'legal', for the lack of a better word. If something is a commercial offering by a competent-looking, rich family man in a suit, it's clearly an official, legal, trustworthy product. You can be proud of using such a fancy-looking service. When they see a community-run open-source project or a grassroots initiative, their first instinct is that it must be shady, illegal, complicated, broken or predatory in some way. It's probably some aftermarket grey area bootleg made by weird tech nerds, political groups with an ulterior motive, conspiracy theorists or some naive teenage hackers. They'd also be embarrassed for using it in front of their peers and neighbours; who uses some free back-alley software, are you poor or something? The same people are the reason why Google is using the word 'sideloading', why scammers love wearing fancy suits, why people suddenly act childishly helpless in front of LibreOffice, or why DIY HRT is so demonised. They trust any kind of 'official approval' over their own senses. If someone does something that isn't 'approved', they're a bad person or clearly endangering themselves and others. No idea why exactly, but psh, it must be wrong somehow, or everyone would do it, right? If people on the Fediverse understood that the whole "it's all so complicated and clunky" thing is just a thinly veiled excuse for a general disdain for non-commercial software, we could finally stop making all our software imitate their corporate equivalents in a futile attempt to appease people who never gave us a chance in the first place. You'll never convince them to treat it in good faith no matter how much effort or money you put into UX or 'ease of use'. All you're doing is making the software worse, e. g. through things like dot-social, verified accounts or begging brands, corporations and politicians to join and give your product some kind of 'official' validation. #mastodon #openSource #linux

Warnung! ❄️ Gerne teilen. @June@mastodon.catgirl.cloud @Natasha_Jay@tech.lgbt Gender being a social construct doesn't mean it's not a real phenomenon. Courts are a social construct too but they can be described, observed and their existence has a tangible impact on my life because I am a part of society. All that "gender is a social construct" means is that it's not a god-given or natural trait of people, it's a product of society (and therefore can be changed). It doesn't mean they don't exist right now.

@kenney@mastodon.gamedev.place Oh definitely. It's spam due to how it's not useful whatsoever (and actually harmful because it's outright wrong), but what's worse is that since it isn't even disclosed that it's LLM bots and they're pretending to be humans, it's deliberately dishonest too. They're trying to mislead people. It's like fraud. LLMs are a fascinating technology with many valid use cases, but the overwhelming majority of applications they're actually used for are fraud, cheapskating and plagiarism. It's really sad.

Mention of psychosis, mention of psychotic triggers, passing mention of drugs
@bemmesr@mathstodon.xyz I'm not aware of a simple list like that unfortunately, likely because 'themes' that may trigger or worsen psychotic delusions are very different depending on the individual, and also on the culture they live in. For instance, people allegedly reporting alien abductions tend to be from places where UFO-related fiction media are popular, while elsewhere, the delusions are totally different! I'd approach it in a similar best-effort way as I consider CW-ing phobias: you can't possible consider every phobia, but you can consider the most common ones, e. g. spiders, snakes, insects, clowns and such and tag them accordingly. At some point of course it's impossible to avoid everything that could potentially trigger someone into a psychotic episode, simply because for any topic at all there will probably be someone who might react negatively to it. For example, if there is someone out there with the delusion that someone named, say, Sharon, is stalking them, then seeing that name out there might trigger their paranoia. Of course that doesn't mean we should just stop communicating altogether or avoid using the name Sharon. I think it'd be best to just be mindful of this issue and the most common themes of delusion. For example, don't post vague absurdist statements that may insinuate things like reality being fake, the reader's family or friends are doppelgangers, anything about "the voices in your head", that you can hear or control someone's thoughts, that "the curse is back", that there's shadow people in the dark, and so on and so on. These things are pretty obvious I think as stereotypical delusions as portrayed in media for example. https://academic.oup.com/schizophreniabulletin/article/51/3/637/7976893 According to this meta-study that analysed 'themes' of delusion, the most common ones are: persecution / paranoia (i. e. (gang-)stalking, secret government agencies, mind control, that the neighbours are deliberately causing noise to terrorise you, that someone's trying to make you go insane)referential (that random patterns, numbers or letters etc. are intended to something for you specifically, that something random in a public place like an ad is referring to you in particular, e. g. someone eating ice cream being a direct attack on your eating habits)grandiosity (i. e. thinking you are a god, the messiah, significantly smarter than all other humans etc.)erotomanic (i. e. thinking someone, especially a random stranger, is secretly madly in love with you, even if they deny it. think celebrity stalkers for example)nihilistic (i. e. nothing is real, the world is fake, we are dreaming, we are in the afterlife, lives are worthless and fake, reality doesn't exist etc.)somatic (e. g. your body or body parts are wrong and fake, you have a mystery illness, you have cancer that talks to you etc.)hearing voices and other sensory hallucinationsthought broadcasting (i. e. thinking your thoughts are audible to others) and so on. Some are more reasonable to avoid than others of course. In general it'd be a great improvement over the status quo if people could just stop this "if you're reading this the curse is back" shit or the "they're in your walls" meme... low bar, I know.

Mention of psychosis, mention of psychotic triggers, passing mention of drugs
One aspect of #disability #accessibility that I feel is criminally overlooked is being mindful of #schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Please, please don't joke around with common psychotic triggers, at least without a clear content warning on it. It's not funny. Examples? Any absurdist shitposting that implies common psychotic narratives (stalking, shadow people, cryptids, paranoia, mind control, fake reality etc.), especially if deliberately directed at the reader! Even worse if it's trying to use a meta level to 'convince' the reader that they can't trust their senses or logic! It's not funny. You're attacking someone's only coping mechanism to ground themselves right after triggering them. The whole "they're in my walls" meme, for instance. Or the "the curse is now lifted/back" one. Or the one that insinuates someone is trapped in a coma and people are trying to send messages via these memes to wake them up or whatever. Or that #Fediverse joke that inserts someone's name or instance into a post (i. e. "anyone else see John Doe around everywhere lately??", where John Doe is automatically changed to the reader's name by exploiting the protocol), is just as bad. All of these can and will actually hospitalise people, or worse!! Psychosis is not a super rare condition. I myself experienced an isolated psychotic episode a couple of years ago after a #THC overdose. Example of someone hospitalised because of a TV ad that happened to use her name: https://www.dexerto.com/tv-movies/woman-hospitalized-after-pluribus-ad-on-smart-fridge-triggers-psychotic-episode-3290678/ There are no words to describe how absurdly terrifying it can be to exist as a consciousness that can't trust its inputs anymore, whose compulsive trains of thought are working against itself. Please, if you consider yourself a progressive or just a kind person, try to think a bit about this before posting. And use a content warning if you're unsure. #PSA #disabled #psychosis

Was soll so etwas? Wann wurde der Faschismus durch "Sichtbarkeit" besiegt? Das ist so unangebrachter und kontraproduktiver Schwurbelkram. Was kommt als nächstes, Atmungsyoga gegen Nazis?

appreciation of transfeminine physique, may be dysphoria-inducing?
I'm gonna say something stupid and potentially inappropriate, but … Even though to my knowledge it has nothing to do with trans people whatsoever and the cover model isn't trans at all, I oddly enough think that the cover for Mónica Ojeda's book Mandíbula (Jawbone) unexpectedly represents what I appreciate about most transfeminine people's unique physique really well. I know that this is a somewhat inappropriate picture to talk about this with, but it is the first (non-personal) image I ever came across that communicates this feeling, so I have nothing else to go off of here. That somewhat longer, defined neck with a visible adams apple, the somewhat stronger shoulders, that specific choker, the hair, the mouth shap; idk why but to me this is such transfem rizz and I am super in love with that specific look. So many trans women have this exact style and I always melt … -3- I hope people don't take this negatively because these are things a lot of us are insecure and dysphoric about. I just think that specific non-passing traits of transfeminine folks are actually really attractive in a queer way. Can anyone relate or am I crazy? #trans #queer

Hey, there. We all know that there are countless cosy and nice communities on #Discord of all kinds that many of us found a lot of friends and (used to) spend a majority of our time socialising in. I used to be able to instantly find nice and welcoming communities about basically any topic – #conlangs, #games, #art, #queer stuff – many of which resulted in amazing friendships and great times. But since I've practically moved off Discord for everything but work, it's been getting lonely. People gradually lost touch, there are no more nightly voice chats, no more life updates, no more new friends, no more cosy community moments. If I'm being honest, the second I left Discord, I stopped making online friends altogether. The #Fediverse is really cool, but it's very rare for people to just text you and take it to DMs and become regular friends you talk to every day. Mostly because it's a social media platform and not a messenger. And that's kinda sad. So I will #AskFedi – does anyone here know any specific non-Discord-based cosy communities like the ones we used to have? Like, places to just hop into a chat and hang out in every night, #Minecraft servers where the folks actually know each other, queer friend and support groups, gaming spaces, hobby-based communities, and so on? I don't mind any medium whether it's #Matrix or #Mumble or Signal or anything else. I'm just yearning for that state of life where I had tons of potential new friends, communities and good times at the press of a button back then. The time you could just join 'something something cafe' you found on Disboard or whatever and immediately make friends with the local folks by just hanging out and posting a bit. (I'm looking for personal recommendations of communities to check out. I'm not looking for people to just direct me to public directories of Matrix channels or whatever, sorry. I am fully aware of those; but everything listed there usually are empty and inactive places that hardly see any authentic interaction between people ever because they were only created for the sake of existing on said software, but nobody actually uses them for fun)

The tech world is full of weird shit. Instead of adding features to the specification of your console/virtual terminal so it can support things like Unicode character rendering, fonts or true colour, we just ended up writing "terminal emulators" instead so you could have a graphical program on top of a display server pretend to be a terminal. The standard inbuilt Linux console still doesn't support anything beyond 8 colours and 512 characters in shitty lil keymaps. If I want a somewhat usable terminal workflow for working with world languages (say, Arabic script and kanji at the same time), or just use programs that render characters like arrows or circles, I need to start a display server/client architecture with a program as a client that emulates a terminal using 2D rendering.

AI nonsense, rant
I have to admit that for the longest time I was kinda ambiguous on the whole generative AI thing. Mostly because I majored in computational linguistics and I love the technology and maths side behind it, I maintain it's an incredibly fascinating invention. I did obviously realise the many ethical problems of using generative AI for all kinds of purposes that ended up in plagiarism, misinformation, harmful content generation and so on. I hated that large language models – being, you know, language models – were shoved into all kinds of roles they were not made for, e. g. information retrieval, programming, web searching, translation, database wrangling, maths, psychotherapy, customer support and so on and so on. On the other hand, I maintained that large language models are a really useful technology for use cases they were intended for, i. e. generating probable text sequences and working with natural language. Looking for a word that you can't quite describe but you know exists? A search engine often can't help you, but an LLM could. Rewriting a text in British English instead of American English? Worked fine. Generating soulless corporate emails to ask your boss for a deadline expansion? Why not. I still think that valid use cases for LLMs exist and that the tech is super fascinating by itself. So, what changed and why am I writing this? It started fcking pissing me off dude!! And I'm mad! Like, everywhere you go, everything's polluted by some AI-generated garbage now. Hobby communities where people used to show off their passion projects? Practically gone, everything's generated by some AI now. Icons, thumbnails, descriptions, perhaps the thing itself.Cool niche Linux programs? Everything's vibecoded or made to run AI for all kinds of nonsense. Seriously! Check out the top 5 #ArchLinux AUR packages [edit: for the keyword "terminal"]! They're ALL 'agents' and AI toolkits!Local festivals and events? Everything's an AI poster now! Gone are the days where the local school kids would design a shitty lil poster for their school summer festival. It's all creepy piss filter ChatGPT fake-Ghibli people now generated in 5 seconds by some adult. And everyone into the AI thing is incredibly insufferable, doesn't have any concept of consent, and seemingly relishes in creeping people out or upsetting them! Like, some of these "agents" seem specifically marketed at people who want to feel like they're super smart software engineers who own the libs by existing. Everything needs to come with a "hehe we're disrupting the market" wink. Where are the people genuinely excited about LLM technology? Why is everyone a grifter or a smug asshole on purpose? Seriously, I don't use and don't ever want to use LLMs for anything anymore, because it just feels so dirty. I'd rather have to find a synonym for a word myself once a month or so instead of using any of those weird-ass machines. Like seriously, every damn cool looking program I consider for my Linux installation has "Claude" as a main "contributor". Everywhere I look there are these shitty out of context rocket emoji. "Agents" files that baby talk about the repository structure pollute every Git repo now. Everyone's "building a tool" now, nobody's programming shit anymore. Minecraft modding sites are full of slop mods with marketing speak and terrible logos that don't even work. Everywhere you look everyone's sweet-talking marketing buzzwords at each other instead of talking like a normal human being. It's so hard to find passion projects now! Everything sucks! fuck! #linux #ai #antiAI #llms #llm #programming

Easy to implement #Minecraft suggestion: Please make dispensers with an axe strip logs in front of it. Shears can empty beehives, but axes can't strip wood?
