Which reminds me - the distinction between "application programmer" and "system programmer" is bogus IMO. If you don't understand how operating systems and your programming language and its runtime work, then you can't be a good application programmer.

The entry and DN caches will churn a lot during any normal workload, which leads to heap fragmentation, which will cause server performance to degrade the longer it runs. That's why I went to such pains to ensure zero mallocs in LMDB's read path, so it's possible to service an LDAP query with zero heap use, and thus zero chance of heap fragmentation issues. Apparently issues they just didn't think about. http://highlandsun.com/hyc/malloc/

@internetarchive@mastodon.archive.org the task was already futile since the advent of email. So much of what we know about historical figures is gleaned from their written correspondence - personal letters that were saved and collected. With email and instant messaging, that channel for personal insight is gone.

"actually its fine if agentic code is unmaintainable for humans because the agents will just maintain it" is just the next cope in a long series of copes from LLM true believers who said they were going to revolutionize customer support, summaries, art, writing and video, all of which they failed at genAI is a dead-end technology that creates output without intention that is practically useless. the only reason it hasn't failed yet is because of the trillions pumped into it by business idiots

I think part of the AI fad is there's a lot of incompetent people currently employed as programmers, living in daily fear of being outed as impostors, who are relieved to have genAI to lean on now.

@MaddieM4@raphus.social I'm reminded of how libc was mostly written as one function per source file, yielding one function per object file, all collected into an archive file and the linker would only pull in the specific objects that a particular program needed. That approach doesn't really do much for glibc these days; stuff like stdio depends on many other library functions so the minimum possible footprint is huge.

Replying to
@MaddieM4@raphus.social AIX decided to improve on the Unix linker approach, all the functions and variables in an object file have explicitly encoded sizes and the linker can pull in exactly the functions it needs, instead of always using entire object files. Makes it less tedious to organize source code and removes the need to split to one function per file. Also the info is preserved in executables, and exes can be relinked against themselves and other objects.

If we were to write a series of blog posts on "how to generate the Fibonacci sequence" but where the given code does something unrelated, like an infinite loop with a couple divide by zero errors, and got enough people to share them and link to them, soon Google and other AI-enabled search engines would start returning those hits when you searched for Fibonacci. And soon after that, coding assistants would start spewing that out when Fibonacci code was requested.

@MaddieM4@raphus.social I think that all reflects IBM's mainframe heritage; I recall using the linkeditor on the UMich mainframes to replace functions in fully linked programs there too. Such a normal thing to do, it's surprising that other systems lack this ability.

@MaddieM4@raphus.social makes it simple to deploy binary updates, you can just send out a single .o with some updated code and relink an affected binary with no other ancillary files needed.

Recycled thoughts: physical networks are inherently natural monopolies and should just be acknowledged and operated as such. Electricity, water, telecoms... their usefulness grows with their scale. They should be nationalized, community owned and operated. VNOs and fake competition all selling service on the same physical infrastructure is just a wasteful bureaucratic fiction. Eliminate them.

My percentage of opens may have gone down, but that's only because the amount of spam has gone up. The number of actually meaningful emails I read probably hasn't changed.

@atax1a@infosec.exchange having used a bunch of mainframes, minicomputers and microcomputers before, sticking to the Unix approach is pretty decent. Better than juggling drive letters and config.sys, certainly. It means it's quick to go from first runnable image to productive environment, because so much software is compatible with POSIX. Any hobby OS that deviates far from that will likely remain only a toy.
