@dougmerritt@mathstodon.xyz As you may know, I had an exchange about with with @jhlagado@jorts.horse about whether there was genuinely something magical about Z80s as a substrate (mostly virtual now, formerly mostly real) for computing. Or whether it was retro kitsch. This is similar to [dartmouth+] #basic and #lisp in different ways, though they are both spawn of that dartmouth workshop on AI in the mid-50s. But basic was basically an attainable home computer, and lisp was sort of commentary on fortran list macros.

commodore 64 BASIC is an abomination, so many secret codes for doing things. for instance, it lacks a CLS command, and you must just know PRINT CHR$(147)... i want to find a popular platform for releasing BASIC code that is not the commodore 64 -- any suggestions? i was thinking the zx spectrum? something sinclair maybe? perhaps we are just stuck with the c64, though, its popularity is pretty overwhelming. #tinybasic #commodore64 #basic #retrocomputing

@da_667@infosec.exchange damn son that is one healthy patch of zucchini, i am actually thinking about selling flowers at farmers mkt and tree hacking - mass production of common trees, it is biological compounding interest, plop them in a 1 gal pot and sell them a year later #basic botany 500

🪨 Visual Basic on the PC w/Windows 3.1 🛠️ Apple wasn't the only company to have a popular, easy to use, visual programming tool, only to yank it from their diehard fans and replace it with nothing. I see what all of the fuss was about with Visual Basic with the help of a "teach yourself" book, get pedantic about Microsoft's use of Helvetica, and *briefly* muse about slop factories. Arnold, from Diff'rent Strokes, guest stars! #retrocomputing #microsoft #windows #basic https://stonetools.ghost.io/visualbasic-win31
