Nate Graham's first-hand, blow-by-blow account on what went down: https://pointieststick.com/2026/09/23/kde-and-ai-and-you-and-me/ Not to do the click-baitey thing, but some of the details my clarify some of the points. Please read through the whole thing carefully to better understand the situation and why what was done was done.

KDE and AI, and you, and me

So I accidentally triggered an online shitstorm in the process of trying to craft a set of more restrictive LLM usage guidelines for KDE. Sorry about that. :/ I’m going to leave the comments …

@purplerabbit@goo.dgirl.gay @Kiriko@awful.systems Yes. FTR we have now banned this person. We needed to verify the allegations regarding their past activity on social media. We have now done so and concluded that their views are incompatible with our values and ethos. Our bans are usually made based on violations of KDE's CoC on our own platforms. https://kde.org/code-of-conduct/ But in this case, as mentioned above, the incompatibilities were too blatant to ignore.

We apologise if any of our messaging over the past days has created confusion. For the sake of clarity:

  1. KDE is open, diverse and accepting and we have the track record to prove it. Please come join us and see for yourself.
  2. KDE does not harbour "fascists" and we have the track record to prove it.
  3. We are not writing a set of "pro-LLM" policies. Quite the contrary. The current draft actually restricts its use much more than currently codified.

@witchgirls@woof.tech They are not. We don't know if you remember when KDE stopped posting on Twitter, some feathers were ruffled because a contributor stated in no uncertain terms why we abandoned that platform. The internal consequences for said person were nil, despite the kerfuffle. And that is because it summarized what most of the community feels, even though most would've been a tad more tactful. That position still stands.

There is an ongoing discussion started here https://mail.kde.org/pipermail/plasma-devel/2026-September/124095.html If anything official comes about regarding LLM, it will come from there (or an offshoot of that discussion). Not from a talk at Akademy. Edit: This is regarding the use of LLMs in development. Nobody is even discussing inserting AI into the desktop. The talk listed is highly speculative, by two people who are not core community members—although they were back in the day.

@MaddieM4@raphus.social @arthsmn@organica.social We're sorry you see it that way, but that is not what happened. Person A violated the internal rules of invent and was banned on the spot. Person B was banned after an investigation. The two bans were inevitable. We cannot have people violating our processes (person A) or our CoC (person B). That person A made the ban of person B happen faster? True. But person B would've been banned sooner or later regardless.

@MaddieM4@raphus.social @arthsmn@organica.social Also it is not a pro-LLM policy. It is more "how the heck are we going to manage the deluge of LLM-generated contributions" policy. Indeed, the current draft is much more restrictive than what we had up until now... which was nothing.

@MaddieM4@raphus.social @arthsmn@organica.social As for closing the thread, we're sorry again, but having that amount of noise on the thread made it completely unmanageable. Our mods and sysadmins are volunteers and many of them have not been able to catch a break in more than 24 hours. We had to do something to take off the pressure and allow them to re-group and catch up. If you are feeling left out, the solution is very simple: become a KDE contributor. You will be able to help decide on policies directly.

In KDE who does, decides. And you have to try to reach a consensus, so absolute unwavererable positions don't usually prosper.
