Someone at Meta has to have wired up some privileged API or other to explicitly put it in the LLM's sandbox, all I guess with no attempt to validate anything. Someone, an actual person, probably several, made obviously bad choices here. Can't even really blame this one on the model, it's plain 'ol bad engineering, putting it on the model just lets people deflect.

@danirabbit see also: basically every customer service scenario ever. the person you are talking to almost certainly isn't responsible for whatever happened, is quite possibly also having a bad day because of whatever happened, and no amount of ‘I spent a lot of money’ gives you the right to mistreat them. if they start playing silly games, well that's different, but otherwise hows about we turn it down a notch and not bite people's ears off as an opening salvo.

@ArborealTechie @MichaelTBacon @LilahTovMoon yeah, and it's also a clear solid question unlike 2016 — silly as it was ‘brexit means brexit’ didn't just spring up from nowhere, there was absolutely no clarity as to what ‘leave’ actually means. Somehow, via divining rods or something I suppose, we ended up with obsessions about things like ‘must leave ECJ’, despite those not being in the question. I highly doubt even the more committed leave voters intended us to leave Euratom (if they'd even heard of it…) which isn't even part of the EU, and yet we did, even whilst the vote could just as easily have been interpreted in a way that kept us in both Euratom and the Common Market.

@Chancerubbage@mastodon.social @stevelieber@mastodon.social yeah, and to be fair they still kinda can be for some complicated do everything machines, but for regular printing it's remarkably close to a solved problem (y'know, as much as printing ever can be). OS X was the big motivator really, the break from classic MacOS: Apple didn't want to make/port their own drivers for things, and manufacturers found themselves with this userbase they couldn't entirely ignore that they didn't particularly want to spend money on, and so CUPS and IPP kinda worked out for everyone, especially when CUPS was already used on UNIX workstations (and of course Linux). Initially it was a matter of translation layers, then printers just did IPP directly. That's also why your average printer switched to connecting over ethernet or WiFi: it's all TCP/IP traffic anyway, why get USB involved.

Internet Printing Protocol is already the ‘native’ print language of macOS and Linux, and Windows has had support since at least XP (I think is now the ‘preferred’ system even?). If your system can print it can probably already print to it driverlessly.

@zkat @indutny @bengl also, and to be clear I'm not involved in npm spaces and haven't read that thread, this is a general comment, a lot of people making that argument seem to also be of the opinion that there's no point even thinking about avoiding things like GitHub and their policies re training because ‘they'll train on it anyway’. Literally arguing that consent isn't worth discussing, much less worrying about, because these same companies that they are apparently in favour of, will violate it anyway. Your fair game simply for existing on the internet, apparently. ‘implicit consent’ one said. They then seem to have absolutely zero comprehension of why some of us are utterly horrified by such ‘arguments’. Not sure it's a coincidence that so far it's always a man proposing that one. (and yes, I personally know men who are also horrified by it and do value consent, settle down everyone)

@lynnesbian as you may or may not know gboolean in GLib-land is in practice an alias for int, 'cos C99 hadn't happened yet and so forth. Meaning it can in fact store any int value, not simply TRUE/FALSE, and you can mostly even get away with it. You shouldn't, but you can. I know for a fact there is code ‘in production’ today that intentionally uses gboolean as a TRUE/FALSE/-1 tristate.

Doesn't stop HP or whoever doing nonsense with ink and such, but that aside we can print without being tied to some online service that'll disappear any second. Also makes something like Open Printer possible. It's a shame other devices didn't go in a similar direction, but I suppose plotters/cutters just weren't widespread enough to encourage it.

I think the most reasonable model would have been a ‘confirmatory’ vote along the lines of ‘the government has spent two years negotiating, should we leave on these terms or remain?’ (most likely worded differently of course)
