A very quiet Sunday morning in Amsterdam.

The big ring gear was falling off the drive gear, so the new version has double helical herringbone, which also looks 37% cooler.

And a photo of me on the steering oar of the Draken as we sailed away from the #Odyssey and back to Norway.

Sometimes I don't understand merchandise branding deals.

Is it accurate to the micron? No. Does it have a mirrored surface finish? Also no. Is it good enough? Definitely maybe.

A quick turn on the lathe made the axle that the giant ring gears will hang from.

I decided to make the wheels rotate continuously rather than with an odometer mechanism and now have the first 12 bits on my Unix epoch clock!

No powered winches - twelve crew work together to hoist the yard with the sail already unfurled.

Then we feasted in their long house and slept on their furs by the fire.

Almost no blocks or pulleys, so grab a handful of sheep tallow to lubricate the tar covered lines.

The Draken is also an experiment in figuring out how to sail a Viking square rigged longship. New crew needs to learn the old ways.

The redesign also required a new axle to be turned in the garage. This probably could be 3D printed for the prototype, but it's nice to be able to make the spinning bits more robust.

I made a quick 15 minute print in order to validate my math that the 8 tooth gear will make a quarter turn, although it's not clear that it's doing that. Seems slightly more than 1/4 but not quite 1/2.

Deutsches Bahn "on time": my arrival in Duisburg was three minutes late, but so was my departure onward to München.

The latch hook is an amazing tool. I need to grind the blunt edge into a smooth point, but it's really useful even without that.

Decided to close the thumb on the second mitten. A big advantage of nalbinding is that if it gets in the way, I can just cut it off without concern for the rest of the fabric.

@ruari@velocipederider.com my experience is that there's a distance at which the camera can read the QR code, but not trigger the NFC, so it is possible to approach slowly enough that the QR works just before the contactless payment triggers. this is not ideal since it requires lots of careful fiddling and maybe it's easier to just pop a shell on the turnstile to hack your way in.

@ruari@velocipederider.com this has been a problem with transit systems since at least 2017 when NS added contactless payment to the turnstiles. It's frustrating that it is still an issue almost a decade later!

@vulgalour@birdbutt.com it's a thread cutter - there's a captured circular blade that you can slide a piece of yarn against. Or maybe an ornate spark plug gap setting tool.
