My plans for xmbdfed (BDF bitmap font editor) https://codeberg.org/drj/xmbdfed are:
- soon a maintenance release 4.7.4 ish (4.7 was the last release, in 2004), basically my current changes wrapped up, which are mostly making it compile and removing bugs for a modern system;
- then later moving towards making it simpler by removing options. So if you actually use it and dearly love some non-default option, say so now. I'll probably change the bitmap editor to be more MacPaint-like too.
Bitmap fonts, eh? What's your favourite font format? Yes, i know about TrueType (though examples would be welcome), BDF, Windows FON (a bit), Adobe BDF (a bit), Plan 9.
Please RT.

@mhd@tilde.zone so i never did play around with BDF fonts in the 1990s when i was using X11. I guess because the setup i used most, an X server logged onto a large shared Unix server, did not allow me to fiddle the served fonts.
Except reading around now, it seems that i can (or could have) run my own xfs and edit BDFs in a subdirectory of $HOME. I guess i wasn't that interested at the time.
Also, in my first job, where there were plenty of different Unix workstations it would have been possible to "borrow" fonts from another font server; but again, never did that either.
@simontatham@hachyderm.io @thaodan@mastodon.social sure, less predates vim, but it doesn't predate vi. (though more might; i'm not sure)
