We fitted solar thermal (hot water) panels when re-roofing in 2006. They've been great and very cost effective. Added solar PV around them in 2011. In 2023, using over 10 years import/export data I calculated the optimum extra PV/batteries needed to satisfy most of our power needs and covered a shed in PV. The shed is south facing with a 20 degree roof. The vertical panels help in winter.

RE: @Rachelburch@mastodon.social

Love Hawthorns. I believe that, after our native oaks, they support more species than any other tree. It's a shame they don't get more appreciation. Getting anyone to leave a mature hawthorn in a laid hedge is a tough ask!

@bigzaphod Tell me about it! This large tree reduces my output on every sunny day during the winter, just when I need it most. The tree is mine, but to fell a mature Ash tree in pursuit of a "green" lifestyle would be absurd.

@brianbilston Have you noticed how Death always finds a way in, despite locked doors and high security? You know who else can do that? ... and is only supposedly busy on one day of the year? No one has ever seen Death and Santa in the same place at the same time!

It baffles me that Republican votes are still enamoured with Trump, even after all the grift and cruelty and the ridiculous "ballroom" fiasco. We truly are a doomed race, one which willingly votes for its own demise.

@tokensane @brianbilston I have read it, but not in well over 20 years. I just read short summary and some bits are familiar. I really must reread it! I can see why you asked but I had totally forgotten the link!

@WanderingWitch @brianbilston He couldn't really carry so much weight with all that activity and squeezing through tight spaces. The suit is just padding for publicity photos and to throw people off the scent! Could be Satan too though. I think that's more of a title than a job. He has minions, so not many hours required surely?

@purple @MichaelTBacon @LilahTovMoon Yes, there was a lot of craziness, but "brexit means brexit" was so ridiculous it was gobsmacking! So many unmentioned negatives. The relocation of the European Medicines Agency to Amsterdam was a serious loss to London and UK health care.

@purple @MichaelTBacon @LilahTovMoon Fair point about voting again after negotiations. It may have given people time to see that the Leave camp would not be able to deliver some of their most unrealistic promises (we'll get all the advantages of being in the club without paying or conforming!).

@X31Andy @bigzaphod Thanks Andy. I went with the second option. I was negotiating with my DNO for 3 years. So had been monitoring the shading where the proposed shed was to be. There are 54 400W panels, split into 6 strings of 9. 4 strings on the roof, 2 on the front. Split to mitigate a crossing shadow. Shed was built for PV, south facing, 20 degree roof for summer, vertical panels for winter. Just added a post about it :- https://mas.to/deck/@ArborealTechie/116351070071408084

RE: @wellingboroughecogroup@mas.to

I'm too late boosting this for yesterday's Repair Cafe but there will be another, so if you live near Wellingborough give it a try! It's so much better for the environment and your pocket to get stuff repaired.

@MichaelTBacon @purple @LilahTovMoon I'm not certain that in the case of Brexit two consecutive referenda would have changed things. The lies and media hype (especially newspapers) would have persisted. Although it might have made a difference to those making a protest vote, thinking it safe, as it wouldn't actually happen. My financial advisor had a number of clients who voted leave to spite their MD, who advised remaining. He's often reminded them since what it's done to their pensions!

The newsreader on Radio 4 this morning, covering negotiations with Iran, referred to whether Iran would hand over their "nuclear dust, as President Trump calls it". To everyone else it's "Enriched Uranium", but that the USA has a child as President we need translations. What next, "Moo moo cows"?

Britain is (apparently) one of the few countries in the world to treat pet fleas and worms prophylactically. This seems to make much better sense.

I refuse to engage with this so called "reality", which the universe has been trying to foist on us of late. Perhaps it's a tell that we are actually inside The Matrix? #NotMyReality

From a post by matthighton.bsky.social.

Post says: "Mel Gibson pictured with his doctor in 2004"
... but that's no doctor - too much blood!

It's obviously his surgeon and his just come out of surgery.

"A spokesperson for the Trump Organization said that neither the president, his family or the company played any role in selecting or approving investments. They receive no advance notice of trading activity and provide no input regarding investment decisions or portfolio management, the statement said." - yeah, right.🤔

Not to lessen the dreadful brutality of such hateful unjust attacks, but I would like to point out that it is definitely not OK to kick an animal like this either. Hope I don't sound like a pedant or unsympathetic by saying so, but the phrase should not be in use any more than now taboo racist terms.

@devxvda@mastodon.ie ... and yet he'll be even more apoplectically angry if he doesn't win the Nobel prize next time and will, once again, blame the Norwegian government for not awarding it to him. He just assumes the whole world works the way he works (or doesn't). In his mind there are no longer any independent agencies or committees in America - they do what he tells them to do, or they are threatened/fired/blackmailed. Ipso facto all heads of state do the same.
