I mean, come on, you know what school was like. None of your classmates read jack shit. Your doctors and therapists probably didn't either.

I cannot get behind the idea that kids need to be reading things in school from topics tailored to their interests. That's what they should be reading outside of school. You have the entire rest of your life to read whatever you want.

Realized this year that if I can't get access to any decent medical professionals, I can simply read the books that they were supposed to have (but probably didn't bother to) read in school

This is just straight out of Machiavelli, really. You don't hire mercenaries to fight your wars for you, because they aren't ever going to be personally invested in the outcome.

What people need for health is information and a book is a lot faster, cheaper, and more comprehensive than an expert consult

the metric to watch is how often someone can look at the software, think about how it can be improved, and make the improvement in a single sitting

It's not unusual for people to become so enraptured with a technology, like electricity, that we become immediately willing to destroy all sorts of shit with massive projects for it

The dream is that you're a company following commonly accepted practices that aspires to be more innovative, but the reality is usually more like you're a company with a combination of bespoke and outdated practices that aspires to be more normal

The goal should be places where people are actually living, where anybody could live an entire life. Instead it's like we have one kind of place you grow up in, another you go to college in, another you find a job in, you move back to the first kind of place to have kids, another kid of place specifically for queer people, and then you go to Florida to retire.

@agatha@gts.snkrgirl.cfd @SRAZKVT@tech.lgbt It's fascinating because the entire point of several years of early math education is just getting kids used to the idea that one value can have any number of equivalent representations, to understand the difference between a quantity and an expression. Utterly failed

There's one reason I've lost all respect for Christopher Nolan: In the scene where Odysseus kills everyone, he's supposed to be completely nude, his beautiful godlike body on display. Where the hell is your courage, director?

Somebody once called this the Martin anti-establishment reflex, but being immersed in all the complaints on here (some of which are quite over the top) has turned me into a claude code defender and that is not a position I ever wanted to find myself in

Part of the problem with the incentives about how to write in essays and stuff I guess is that if you explain anything, it seems you're perceived as mincing words, as not taking a hard enough stance. People love the "real talk, come right out with it, guns blazing" but what it actually means is just opening with a page full of contentless vague positioning
