@eclecticpassions@fosstodon.org I don't have a more eloquent explanation that Codeberg's own post, but I do have:
-
hours spent defending my own server instead of creative pursuits.
-
legacy GitHub projects where it's no longer worth sifting through slop to find the genuine PRs.
-
the alienation of trying to exchange ideas with other developers and realizing I'm talking to a bot.
FOSS in 2026 is miserable, and Codeberg is taking positive action to fix it.
The June, 2026 Emacs Carnival is "Underapprecated Emacs Built-ins." There are about two million lines of code in the core Emacs repo. Send me your favorite hidden treasure. If you're unsure where to look, see some ideas in the post.

My son capped an undefeated soccer season despite my coaching, followed by my wife walking for her MLIS. Today is a good day.
Despite the "no warranty" in my projects' licenses, I prioritize security. I don't typically use GitHub on weekends anymore, but here I am on Mother's Day, after the mom in the house went to bed.
If you ever point your Slop-o-Matic 3000™ at a repo I maintain, ignoring the multiple paths offered for responsible disclosure, you will not be around to see my response. You will be damned.
Rain or shine, vote every time.
Another cursed article about how to write scrapers to circumvent anti-bot protections. I'm not anti-bot per se, but I am staunchly anti-anti-anti-bot.
So, I got carded last night while drinking a Diet Pepsi in my late forties.
"Reclining your seat in coach is a jerkass move," he typed into his acutely angled laptop.
An Emacs rite of passage is to fork code-review and fix the bitrot. My turn has come.

Between forge and code-review, I am starting to see a path to a tractable notification system. At the very least, I see a path to spending less time on github.com.
Emacs has an obscure keybinding, `C-h C-w,` that opens the disclaimer of warranty. More useful would be a keybinding that popped that up on entitled user's screens.
Opened the season with a scoreless draw, but the weather is perfect. I'm claiming one point for the result and a second for the fresh air.
Substitute coached one final soccer game this spring. We conceded with five minutes to go, then equalized with two. I want to live in an America that embraces universal health care and tie games.

> This is a song that warns you in advance that next year
> Everybody is gonna try and sell you things that maybe you shouldn't ought to buy
To speak of this family's immense sacrifices to settle here invites unfair competition with others. To say they did everything "the right way" justifies an unjust system. But Indy is absolutely a better place for the Kotians being here, and it would mean a lot if you would contact Rep. Carson, Sen. Young, and Sen. Banks on their behalf.
@lars@mastodon.hupel.info A review from another Illinoisan:
-
No notes on the pizza.
-
You only get one life, but ketchup on a hot dog is how my younger child learned the word "disinherit," at about age 4.
-
Instead of being concerned about structural integrity, order it dipped and accept the delicious consequences. This would have been the more appropriate place to contemplate having only one life.
