TIL vim has built-in encryption. If you type :X it prompts you for a passphrase and after saving the file it will be stored in encrypted form. When you reopen the file in vim it detects the encrypted format and prompts you for the passphrase to decrypt, so it's completely transparent. It uses the blowfish cipher, which is pretty old now but still considered secure, so long as it's only used for small files

Hollywood are full steam ahead making their stupid "Hunt for Gollum" movie but all we really want to see is a chill soap opera set in the Shire, just hobbits going about their daily lives with occasional bits of romance and scandal

Most people who have heard of the monster raving loony party probably think of Screaming Lord Sutch, but since his death in the late 90s it's been run by a racist pub landlord https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2000/jan/15/weekend.jonronson

And I say this in part because the long standing "joke party" (monster raving loonies) are really not funny at all. If you read their website their policies are all bottom of the barrel humour like "a court of human lefts to balance the court of human rights". It's like your cringeworthy uncle dressing up in a silly costume and trying to be funny

@corbden@defcon.social as a former Google employee, it used to be this way within the company too. There was a culture of pushback against stuff that people thought was wrong or against the company's values. One of the biggest changes with Sundar Pichai at the helm was that the senior management stopped listening to any of that stuff or taking it seriously. Internal channels for expressing dissent (like TGIF) were abolished, vocal dissenters now get fired etc. Very much not the company it once was, at all

@vga256@mastodon.tomodori.net @philpem@digipres.club reminds me of how the first versions of Microsoft Bookshelf are based on a modified version of the Windows Help program. The big files on the CD that store the dictionary etc. are just HLP files renamed to a different extension. You can even open them in the Wine help viewer. I have a fond memory of that early version and how the entrypoint into the system was a skeuomorphic interface: it showed a literal picture of books on a shelf and you could click each of them to open them and look things up. They got rid of it in later versions but at the time it really stoked my imagination and showed the possibility of the CDROM format. A whole bookshelf of reference volumes, all on a single disc.

@robpike@hachyderm.io not a complete repudiation. It might seem that way at the moment because the dumbest voices are the loudest ones There are those of us who listened to what you said and understood it, who have taken it to heart and still try to put that philosophy into practice. I hope you know that and know that your work made a difference and is appreciated

@plutarch@gotosocial.plutar.ch @Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange in the UK the Tories pulled this amazing stunt several years ago where they did a one-off slight raise to the minimum wage and renamed it "the national living wage" It's not actually a living wage of course. But it shut down all the actual discussion which was exactly what they really wanted

@valkyrie@wandering.shop great to see people exploring concepts like these. i've always found clustering to be a fascinating concept and it's disappointing to me that it's always been a niche feature that you usually need special patched kernels and such to pull off. really i think it ought to be a standard feature of all operating systems that you can just cluster them and combine many physical computers into a single conceptual one

@ireneista@adhd.irenes.space @corbden@defcon.social the damore incident was the real watershed in my eyes. They had the chance to root out toxic elements that were leaking internal discussions to right wing influencers and instead just cancelled the town hall and swept the whole thing under the rug. The first big sign to me that Sundar didn't get it and he's gone on proving it again and again ever since

@thisislieven@c.im @jonathanreed@techhub.social @BenRiceM@mastodon.social I recommend checking out the top grossing movies for last year. It's almost entirely sequels, reboots, remakes at this point. I'm talking 18/20 of the top movies last year. And one of the two that wasn't was the fucking Minecraft movie. If you go back over the past few years it's been the same pattern for over a decade. I wonder sometimes if we're not thinking enough about the connection between that and politics. Like is it surprising we end up with backwards facing right wing political movements if all our culture is backwards facing, retelling the same old stories from decades ago. Meanwhile the biggest movie this year is an adaptation of a story from almost 3000 years ago

@mhoye@cosocial.ca love to see more eink devices on the market but:

  • it's unclear what one can do with this besides reading ebooks and maybe basic note taking (it calls itself a "computer")
  • it's unclear how this is superior any of the other ebook readers on the market
  • lack of keyboard means that to me this is a "consumption device" rather than something that's genuinely useful for creativity (ie. I don't consider this a "computer" - ability to create things is the distinguishing difference in my eyes between a computer and a tablet)
