@nixCraft yeah, i figure there's two ways to play software these days. option one, you put quality first, all the time, it is the core of everything. option two, you compete with the entire world to have the sloppiest slop thrown out to the world the soonest and cheapest, erasing all your customer loyalty and competitive differentiation ... and then, your margins.

@kouhai@social.treehouse.systems right, so this is about where things started to go down i moved the one rook to h1 for an exchange, soon sent the other rook back to the back rank. i had a bit of a material advantage in the exchanges that followed, but black wasn't properly doomed until a little while later, when i offered my rook; bait taken, I moved the knight to put the king in check while opening up a discovered attack on her queen. at that point it was just specifics.

@MiaWinter i think the usual approach is you keep the container image immutable, you write mutable state somewhere else, and you design for the container to be transient, with several instances coming and going as the whims of the cloud dictate

@MiaWinter well, even then, "upgrade" isn't necessarily anything different than "restart," and maybe if you're lucky, "graceful rolling restart"

@MiaWinter@tech.lgbt often short works are purer — the ones that just spring from your mind without planning and editing and overthinking (you can't do the same things with them that you can do with a longer story, but sometimes you don't need to) and when you've got a lot of intense emotions, and haven't written for a while, they tend to all come out at once, like crying out same thing for music, which hasn't quite been the same since the specter of global thermonuclear annihilation faded in the nineties

@maya A while back I was thinking of getting myself a piece of Statement Jewelry, and contemplated a necklace with a rather large, synthetic blue diamond. I looked at the largest the website had, 3.25 carats, and saw it would be a rather expensive ~$7,000. A little rich for my tastes, but I could have gotten it if I really wanted. I chose prudence over extravagance, but the real thing that would make it a Statement was the price of the equivalently sized natural diamond (somewhere around $8.5 million lololol)

@worik @nixCraft see you say that, and maybe you can attract investment and make cashmoney at the IPO, and maybe even clean up later, but that's probabalistic chance at success at best and your firm is full of people from the slop culture; that's hard to change. your competitors can LLM a service up just as well as you, agents can migrate your customers off your platform, agentic buyers will care little about the power of your brand, and your moat is all gone

@tante@tldr.nettime.org disagree. institution-centric approach that subsidizes some of the people who need it least (e.g. me) while excluding some of the people who would benefit the most from support. proposed alternative: help people, not just institutions. people should have adequate and equitable levels of support that they may pursue their life goals (economically meaningful ones and otherwise) as they see fit. maybe that means higher education! maybe often! or maybe that means the trades, or a cloistered order of dominican nuns, or performing independent study. higher education should not itself be strongly subsidized, and instead should be available at market rates, subject to competition. that includes state schools — a girl in West Virginia would be able to attend school in Illinois or California or New York or whatever makes sense, instead of having to pay tons of extra money for education just for crossing the border. again, people not institutions.
