my solar powered personal site went down for the first time in 6 weeks, right at fall equinox. it was offline for 2 days with the weather and rain and shorter days. it's really cool, and what's even cooler is that it's mine, not beholden to anything other than me and the server i put it on. and when it's offline, anyone subscribed to my RSS feed can still read what was already pulled down whether my site is powered or not.
this is the good internet.

if there's a class of people who would charge you for the sunlight shining down every day, the air you breathe, and the water you drink at the first opportunity to do so, it's time to think about how to make that class of people disappear and never come back

this is not something i plan to continue working on, mostly a proof of concept for a wild idea that i had. i can't develop it further on my own, i can't really defend its practicality, i can only present a different perspective on what the core of an operating system could be by design.
maybe i have no idea what i'm doing at all. anyway it's out there in the world. critique it, play with the idea, use it to inspire thinking outside the box.

i don't know that this scales, that it is practical, but it is a thought experiment i believe is worth having that other ways of doing things are possible.
systems can find each other via signed beacons if on the same network (lan/wifi/mesh). systems trusting each other is a deliberate human act.
the kernel itself is built on a capability-security model where authority flows only through explicit tokens

@tinker@infosec.exchange a commercial VPN is my vibrator's best friend, and a private VPN is my isolated self-hosted services' best friend 😂
tor wrapped in a layer of multi-hop VPNs wrapped in a layer of tor wrapped in a layer of multi-hop VPNs is my anonymity's best friend, which is what most people think a single commercial VPN alone does and that sucks

it works on linux for resource sharing between two distinct systems

@floriann@infosec.exchange tiny microkernel that makes the federated resource sharing safe, resource sharing runs on top
really just a thought experiment and learning experience for me.
seL4 accomplishes this already afaik

@JustinDerrick@infosec.exchange it might be. i know for me, when i think about this kind of solution and look around for one that isn't made for corporate and highly resourceful/advanced hardware that anyone can easily DIY, i don't see very much.
that's what motivated me to make this proof of concept as a thought experiment on gift and library economies in federated computing.
maybe it's an old tired idea, but it certainly isn't at the forefront of most design thought nowadays.

@JustinDerrick@infosec.exchange i would say gigabit far outperforms a microSD but eMMC i'm not sure. i think it depeneds entirely on the context and conditions of I/O and throughput. these are great questions
