Dear news reporters: I do not care how many movies you watched in the 1980s and 1990s. The Terminator, let alone SKYNET, does not exist. We have not gotten to the point in which Durandal and Leela will fight to take over a space station. JOSHUA is not going to stop projecting nuclear winter and instead opt to play a game of chess. Number Five is not, despite how cute he may be, alive. Computers are still computers are still computers and will only do what a human being programs them to do, and people are stupid. Stop assigning them agency. Say that "Microsoft created an automatic hacking program which was inadequately contained." Assign the blame CORRECTLY, because you cannot blame a computer, it's doing exactly what it's programmed to do. OpenAI is a dead slab of metal and electrons arranged to mimic a human face and if you refuse to see that then you're as brain-dead as any chunk of silicon. #ai #llms #infosec #computing

@cmccullough@polymaths.social Considering that the Luddites were all about maintaining a standard quality of work and being paid a fair share of the organization in which they were a part, something which capitalistic automation threatened on various levels, I daresay it's no insult, no insult at all. The use of 'luddite' as a pejorative is a capitalist fiction.

@agreeable_landfall@mastodon.social @markwyner@mas.to @janeishly@beige.party Big same. I cheered for her -- cheered! -- with her victories against the god-botherers, with her world of whimsy and magic capturing the hearts of a generation. And now it's gone, and I can see more clearly the cracks in the edifice. Of course she was a bigot. On reflection, it's written into every line of her books, from the British nobility implemented as if it were a net good to the shaming of so many positive human traits. The whimsy is now sucked away, replaced with a bitter cold. The Harry Potters of the world are cops, have always been cops. The House Elves are still enslaved, and the people at the top continue drinking wine while the peasants starve in Knockturn Alley.

Wasn't the burning of the Library of Alexandria once considered one of the greatest tragedies of the literary world? I want to be clear here, it seems like the people in charge are revisiting all the horrors of the past in pursuit of a moment more at the top of a virtual heap.

If anything has proven the folly of #optout systems, it is the fact that robots.txt and spiders.txt are no longer respected by the plagiarism engines stealing the sum total of human knowledge in order to corrupt it and sell it back at a 10,000% markup. Opt-out systems are ephemeral, and only operate as long as the aggressor chooses to respect it, which is to say, 'until they can get away with not doing so'.

@dyckron@cosocial.ca As someone who worked the opening shift at a Barnes & Noble in the mid-later 2000s, where the sun was still just rising when I got in, in Texas, I have comparatively little appreciation for these concerns. People are already getting up well before the sun, to go into their shifts in the bleeding hours of the morning. Because that's what capitalism does, and what it has always done. I feel like there have to be better ways to fix this than, year after year, forcing people to jump an hour forward and back.

If there's someone I trust to keep me up on food and farming, it's Sarah Taber, of Farm to Taber fame, and this thread about how Taylor Farms didn't just drop the ball, they dropped a whole stack of balls which had been carefully and meticulously balanced for years, is impressive. Impressive in a lot of ways, really. The decision of TF to go for the uncertainty and doubt rather than launching an immediate investigation is incredibly telling about the corporate landscape. They could have said, "Oh crud, our bad, let's fix this," but instead they let it go until the diarrhea hit the fan. And this is an action which, in this day and age, is likely to be rewarded. https://bsky.app/profile/sarahtaber.bsky.social/post/3mrbctrtdws2w

If I do find myself traveling air at any point in the foreseeable future - extremely unlikely, but stranger things have happened - I do believe I shall first invest in a set of Bluetooth speakers and a set of audio files including flatulence, vomiting, and assorted barnyard noises, and I suggest frequent fliers also stock up.

Proselytizing is undoubtedly much more difficult when the sound of excessive gas is providing a much more welcome accompaniment to your hot air.

Every single fucking capitalist institution right now has been saying the line 'we wouldn't mind a union, we're just concerned that people might have been forced into it' for going on 75 years now and I'm really sick that the credulous media keep reprinting the obvious lie. Our society has a tendency to force people into capitalism, a broken system full of broken ideas run by the most broken people of all. People don't have to be forced into a union, just show 'em that they could get a few basic human rights if they join.

They're therefore more able to dissolve in the liquid, providing the colouration and flavour you see here! A dissolved fruit leather will probably give you a murkier, algae-pond look, so it might be truer to form but less palatable.

So a case against a man who wiped his GrapheneOS phone with a duress password during what I can only assume was an illegal search-and-seizure operation -- the presumption of innocence, with regards to CBP, ICE, DHS and the Department of in-Justice, has long since evaporated -- is now progressing. The material facts are not in dispute, the question is whether he had any right to do so after having been refused an attorney repeatedly. I do so hope they go to a venue with a judge who will call them out on the fucking floor. Even some Trump-appointed sockpuppets are getting tired of his hand up their ass, so even with an Atlanta jurisdiction, fingers are crossed.

(The religiously-focused believe the same, after a fashion.) This might be a fox-and-henhouse situation, but one really needs to reindex the factors for a higher referential. This is an entire administration of grift and corruption; there's no way that at least $100 million of that won't make its way into Trump's hands somehow, and they'd try (poorly) to obscure that in any way possible. Good on this judge for blocking it, however briefly.
