@vertigo@masto.hackers.town I grew up with Heathkits, and unfortunately, the nature of electronics today doesn't lend itself to kitification. It becomes either a trivial final assembly of premade components, or through-hole soldering of basically obsolete passive parts because SMT simply isn't within the capability of most human's fingers. If anything, I'd like to see dis-enshittification devices: replacement logic boards that unchain your e-bike from the manufacturer's cloud, or restore functionality to abandonware like old Sonos speakers, or early Nest thermostats. Add WiFi or Bluetooth control to those loss-leader $99 air conditioners with knobs. A Software Defined Radio that lets you read your electric, gas, and water meters directly. A retrofit to lobotomize those $300 42-inch Walmart TVs to end surveillance. A modern version of those cheap, ubiquitous Colorado tape drives, so we can all back up our terabyte hard drives again without spending ten grand.

Oh, your whiz bang graphics card isn't supported? Then you're stuck with 1024x768, get used to it, because MS isn't going to tell you how to download and install the driver you need, or even be able to tell you which of the 1,500 different model cards you have. Laptop with optional video installed? Nah, Win 11 will always pick the chipset video, and not even let you know there's an alternative. If you turn off 'features' that most people don't even realize they have a choice about, you are missing the true suckage that is Win 11, Edge, and Office. As to finding the new Settings better than Control Panel, try setting a static IP address. Go on, I dare you.

There's two things anyone looks at when replacing a lightbulb: the bulb shape and the socket size. The crappy paper wattage label curled from the heat and fell off years before. Packaging of LEDs in the USA have standardized the color temperature (even if it remains confusing, e.g. "cooler" is a bigger number). They need to take the next step with luminosity.
