Hi fiber people! My mom saw a cool idea on a fiber arts newsletter and would like to pursue it with a friend, but the only place the newsletter linked to was Instagram, and my mom won't use Instagram. So I'm asking here on her behalf: does anyone have any links where she could see examples/stories of people making Little Free Fiber Libraries? (Like Little Free Libraries, but for fiber arts.) Links/personal experience/boosts appreciated! #AskFedi #knitting #FiberArts #Library

It's the second year of my food garden. I've greatly expanded this year by adding an in-ground bed. While things are going pretty well, everything hasn't seemed quite as charmed as last year. I've had a lot more pests to deal with this year for some reason. Still, it feels like a gift to be able to get outside for a couple of hours a day and have a clear task to do. (And one that will feed me, even!) #gardening

“Meta has not found any case, under any cause of action, where one defendant was ordered to pay over one trillion dollars—or any number remotely close to that staggering figure,” the attorneys claim.

Maybe Meta should stop bragging about the number of users it has when it is doing criminal harm to so many of them.

I'm planning a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico with my mom for our 75th/45th birthdays. (We were supposed to do 70/40 but traveling 5 years ago was a hard no.) Anybody have any "don't miss this" suggestions for Oaxaca (city + coastal), or "skip it, it ain't great" thoughts? We're both mobile and fairly active. My mom can't really do boats anymore. We both love normal stuff: art/culture, mole (omg yum) and other Mexican cuisine, beautiful natural stuff, etc. #AskFedi #recommendations #travel #mexico

The @homeassistant@fosstodon.org integration was automatic and is one of the best I've seen. You are absolutely not required to send data to AirGradient in any way. If you want to keep everything totally local, you can. I've decided to contribute my data to the maps because I respect how they've handled all this so well. The monitors shipped from Thailand to the U.S. in under a week with no extra BS. I just got this set up today, so no long-term feedback, but so far so good! 2/2 #solarpunk

The takeaway: the big AI companies are making ludicrous claims that are totally falsifiable about what their products will do to the job market. The incentive structure is such that creating fear around their products will make them loads of money. I've heard that general take before, and it has felt intuitively true, but it's awesome to see someone provide evidence that the claims about job replacement are impossible without a quantum leap in energy generation etc. #ai

RE: https://wandering.shop/@CoolerPseudonym/116909869298397635 This thread is full of new-to-me information. I figured Libby was not operating out of the kindness of their heart, but I didn't understand how grifty they are. I really appreciate this thread and will use Libby differently now!

Public library ebooks are basically a thing of the past. Libby is bleeding the libraries to death, sucking tax money straight to private equity. (KKR owns it). For that cost, you get very little, beyond hockey-playing-vampire romance novels and other dumb bestsellers. If your experience with Libby is still good: 1) You live in one of the few remaining cities in the US with a well-funded library 2) It won’t last. Libby is a parasite that’s indifferent to its host’s long-term survival 🧵

@ClimateJenny@biodiversity.social wow, that's an incredible find! I kind of love IKEA. Totally agree that people aren't getting the gravity of this situation. I was pretty sick for a couple of days because of the wildfire smoke recently, so I ended up biting the bullet and putting together a measurement and filtration system, plus ordering good respirators for myself and my asthmatic mom. I would honestly love to bury my head in the sand some more, but it's time to stop doing that now.

@mcmullin@musicians.today @sknob@mamot.fr @meljoann@topspicy.social The cool thing about music to me is that, at its best, it is actually *not* evenly distributed time, but a performer's stretching and shrinking of time. There's been a lot of really interesting research done on micro-timing, and how incredibly consistently and precisely good performers mess with time. Very interesting stuff! And it's also the thing we've lost when we dump everything onto a grid and quantize it. :(

@dsc@mastodon.scot It would have been a little cheaper to go the IKEA route, and the result probably would have been the same. I decided to go the #FOSS route, assuming it would be a lot less convenient. But I was impressed! It was probably the easiest smart thing setup I've ever done. Either way, monitoring the air in your home is quickly becoming kinda necessary unfortunately. :( @homeassistant@fosstodon.org

@mcmullin@musicians.today @sknob@mamot.fr @meljoann@topspicy.social I've always thought of time division as akin to numbers themselves -- when we divide anything (time, space, ??) into equal parts, we have a way to interface with it that suits our cognitive tendencies and limitations. (Why? Ummm...I don't know.) Even distribution also creates a consistent rigidity that's incredibly practical, e.g. a sewn seam. 1/x

I clearly need a long-term solution for maintaining my respiratory health when there's wildfire smoke. What are people doing? Anyone recommend specific respirators? (I don't particularly want to rely long term on being able to get a very specific type of filter if that's possible.) Is the Corsi Rosenthal box the best thing for my house? Is there a permanent version I won't hate looking at? (I have basic Levoit purifiers.) #wildfires #MaskUp #corsirosenthalbox

Hey everybody out there in the Northern Hemi. Chances are you're hot right now. Me too. Not in a good way. I'm thinking of getting involved in my small New England city's climate committee. Anyone have any good resources out there on what communities should be doing to prepare for what's yet to come? Looking for ideas, plans, examples...really anything in any stage that could help me situate myself on how forward-looking, well-led places are preparing/reacting. #climate #ClimateCrisis

@crankylinuxuser@infosec.exchange gotcha. I'd say that's pretty similar in general to the take that the guy in the video expresses re utility. I certainly would not assume that the problem has already been solved in pieces and that an LLM will put it together. Sure, LLMs have done that a couple of times, and impressively. But there are a lot more problems that they have not solved, so I don't see the logic in assuming they would solve the specific problem that makes this business not really that viable.

It was crazy town bc he is intellectually very competent. It's the emotional intelligence bit that makes him susceptible. I decided not to push him hard on anything because I didn't want a fight, but I heard a lot of absolutely insane bullshit anyway. Also, he can no longer complete a sentence without using the word "Claude." (At least it's not Grok?)
