Between the last German elections and the impact of the Trump policies, I don't know how to write about things happening without sounding absolutely despairing on this world.
So I will not. I can't add anything that hasn't already been said.
Because what we need now is hope (the kind of hope that makes you fight, not wait) and ideas, ideas for (small) things to do. And beauty and fun, to replenish.
And because I can't deliver of the first two, I'll try for the later.
Do good things and talk about them. And if good things are done to you, for you, around you, also talk about then.
Because knowing may inspire others. Because folks feel lonely and caught in endless doom. Because we sometimes need a push to do something: it's easier if we know there is someone else, even of they are just a voice on the little screen in our pockets. Because we need to combat the negativity bias.

A reminder to myself: You are a plant. It's now officially fall. Sit outside that lunch break. Make sure your body sees some sunlight. Yes, it will make your sleep better. And your awake periods actually awake.
A reminder that card only is shit: tried (not very successfully) to help an African (not sure which country) stundent who had just arrived by train in Leiden & needed to get to the 2.5 km away dorm.
She needed to take a taxi (extra expensive in NL) because the buses need a (credit) card and she didn't have one working in Europe. And to add insult yo injury, I had to tell her she needed to walk around the station because the taxis are on the other side & she need a card to get through. 😔
Many sad and powerful slides and references in Sara Bonito's talk on Gender Inequality in Astronomy - this one did in particular hit home.

Not quite some #VisibleMending, but definitely #mending: my olive linen pants definitely would not have survived more than another wear, so I added some thin, soft denim-like material and fixes it with Sashiko-like (I know, not real Sashiko) stitches.
One side was made fully by eye, the other with some guiding lines. Neither is perfect and if I want visible mending, I'm going to have to find a better way in the future, but this one works and holds.
Was the #repair worth it? 1/2

"thanks for a detailed and thoughtful report. exemplary actually. i find it very useful."
-- and I am PREENING myself on this.
Seriously, folks, never forget how happy a few words of real praise (there were some more details in there that show that the editor truly engaged) can make someone.

Genau das - und nicht nur wenn es um Wissenschaftskommunikation zu einem Laienpublikum geht, sondern auch innerhalb des Wissenschaftsbetriebs bei Bewerbungen.
Es gehen mal wieder hunderte Bewerbungen durch meine Hände und so viele Leute denken nicht drüber nach, wer eigentlich ihre Projektbeschreibung lesen wird (obwohl wir sie explizit drauf hinweisen, dass die Auswahlkomission sehr breit aufgestellt ist und sie entsprechend schreiben müssen).

Makes enough for 6 meals. I use 1200g fresh spinach & frozen stale bread. No, it's not too much spinach, believe me - you put it into a pan (not all at once!) & it cooks down just into the right amount.

Local place, not visibly a restaurant at all (thanks google for pointing it out for once!), hand-written daily-changing menu, grandpa-style cook explaining all the dishes and a "glas of wine" of about half a liter.
Only the bruchetta-style starters were something we ordered, all other starters were on the house 🤯

It should not work together, but oh, it does.

I'm in that phase (they come sometimes) when I struggle focusing even for 10 min, non-stop distracted.
I HATE this.
No proper reading possible. Art only in small bits.
I wish I were the person whose reaction to certain kinds of stress is hyperfocus. But no, I have brain hamsters who panicky run on their little wheels and want brain pop corn as distraction.
(Please no recommendations on what to do. I know how to deal with this and will deal with this. But I want to share. Visibility, etc.)
"Meinungsfreiheit" - kein einfaches Buch (auch wenn @ronensteinke.bsky.social, wie immer, sehr gut schreibt), wie erwartet. Aber auch, wie erwartet, mit sehr viel Gewinn gelesen.
Vieles klingt jetzt, eine Woche nach dem Auslesen, noch nach. Von der Hauptthema des Buchs unabhängig vor allem der Gedanke, dass (und warum) erlaubt/nicht erlaubt Regelungen eindeutig formuliert sein müssen, auch und vor allem im Gesetz.
Leseempfehlung auf jeden Fall.

Brains are strange. Mine is usually pretty chill about waiting - for people or trains, doesn't matter.
But I've got a (minor) referral in my inbox to an eye clinic. My GP sent me to the one that is much further away from my place, so I want to find out whether they can take me in another location. I know I need to call the clinic on Monday to ask whether they can do it or whether I need to ask the GP.
And my brain is SCREAMING at me to do it NOW, throwing up complex nonsensical scenarios.

There is a reason why I did not want to go to #COSPAR in Florence (but I have to).
Made birthday muffins for a friend this week :)
It's a kefir-based recipe that was originally a cake and that I got from a friend during the first months of the pandemic, when everyone seemed to search for comfort in cooking. It's spectacular as muffins. The kefir and the chocolate keep them in perfect balance of sweet and slightly tangy with bits of nuttiness from walnuts. And they make excellent brownies if you forget the baking powder 😅
