Obviously, this account is not the "Tom" account. I think I am going to run my little experiment for a few more months. I am curious to see how "bad" things get and when I am done with the experiment I will also publish which Fedi sites picked on poor "Tom".

This should be the most obvious clue that the person is a scammer, but since many people don't necessarily check the scammer's profile and only notice a single post at a time in their timeline, it can go unnoticed. But a normal person who needs help has a life. A normal person occasionally shares photos of friends, family, and perhaps their cat. A normal person talks about work and the random rant they have concerning their boss or some product or service they disliked. A scammer is all about the story of how they need your help. That is because this is their job. They have made the whole purpose of having a social media account to phish for people to pay them. And as I said in post 1 of 2, it is all about volume and maximizing their "ad" coverage, just as a corporation would. The scammers lack substance beyond the scam because the scam is their job. Many scammers will even post 4–8-hour workdays, professionally asking you for money. Even a person under duress will talk about something other than being under duress, especially since it is human nature to find some form of escape. Kentucky Governor and Democratic moderate centrist Andy Beshear, along with Senator and Republican conservative Mitch McConnell, are good examples of why many people see the two parties as the same. We all know that Mitch McConnell is likely not well enough to perform his duties anymore, or, if reports are believed to be true, has passed away (is dead). Andy Beshear himself claims he has received reports of Mitch McConnell's passing (death). But the goal of the Republican party is to drag this out until August 2, 2026, to prevent a special election. Kentucky Governor and Democratic moderate centrist Andy Beshear could challenge this status quo right now and call for an election. There is nothing stopping him. But like all moderate centrists, all he is doing is pointing and saying, "See, see, look what they're doing," but without doing anything to stop them. Moderate centrists act more like Republican conservative publicists and commentators at a sporting event, expecting us all just to look and watch, but do nothing. People don't want to people-watch (or bird-watch) along with you. If knowing what they're doing or not knowing still gets us in the same place with the same results, there is no point in electing moderate centrists. You want real change and accountability? I hope that when their partnership (contract) ends — and I hope it does sooner rather than later — they choose a better alternative. Likewise, I suspect many Mozilla Firefox users now feel the same way about Firefox's partnership with Mullvad VPN.

Although Proton still no longer promotes itself as using Mastodon on their official website (see screenshot), and I suspect that is because they cannot control the narrative here. The Fediverse does not generally have a unified algorithm which they can manipulate to control any given narrative.

Because Ubuntu follows Debian, this creates a messy chain: Debian > Ubuntu > third-party dev. You have to worry about bugs from all three. For example, like Linux Mint, these forks work great at first. But unless you stick to a stock setup and only use Flatpaks, updates eventually break things. Customizing with new apps, settings, or third-party sources risks breaking that long development chain. It’s even worse if someone forks that fork, adding a fourth upstream. Tuxedo OS is fixing this by doing what Ubuntu originally did: forking Debian directly. Cutting out the middleman removes a massive layer of potential conflicts. Debian is a mainline, independent OS, making it the perfect, stable base to build upon.

The current stable version of Sharkey is 2025.4.7. This issue was also verified against the developer build (Sharkey 2025.5.2-dev), meaning even upgrading to the developer branch won't resolve it.

In my opinion, not many people tested the 4.6.0 pre-release because most administrators and users were focused on the critical security vulnerabilities that were fixed in 4.5.10 and 4.5.11. As a result, 4.6.0 did not receive the same level of public testing that 4.5.0 received before its release. At the same time, Mastodon is already working on version 4.7. The project's goal is to reach version 5.0 by the end of this year or early next year, which has accelerated the development schedule. Because Mastodon is moving quickly toward 5.0 and introducing significant changes along the way, newer releases will likely have shorter support lifecycles than usual (for example, I don't expect 4.6.11). Once the 5.0 series is released, the expectation is that development will return to a more stable and predictable release cadence.

Let me be entirely clear: I 100% believe Israel is guilty of war crimes, without a shadow of a doubt. But I also 100% know that these accounts are predatory scammers exploiting that exact human tragedy for profit.

I know this because I deal with these exact tactics professionally. It is a textbook emotional manipulation scam: they weaponize high-stakes political buzzwords to deflect scrutiny, manufacture outrage, and completely shut down any legitimate opposition.

They are genuinely exhausting. It is not just the volume of messages, but the constant notifications about scammers asking for money or following me out of nowhere.

However, the worst part is their manipulation tactic. They weaponize deeply sensitive emotional and political issues. Whenever you call them out or try to warn others, they falsely accuse you of being anti-Gaza, supporting genocide, or using other inflammatory buzzwords simply to manipulate public outrage.

But as a child, I experienced asthma so regularly and so severely that I assumed it was how I was going to die — gasping for breath until my last. That's an awfully heavy thought for a child to bear. We had a gas stove. Ironically, I prefer cooking over a real flame, but my asthma was always worse around it. When I asked my doctor, he said it was all in my head. Even as a kid, I made the connection. But when I spoke up, adults dismissed me with, "That's just you," as if it wasn't even worth considering. Now there’s a study. Decades later, seeing the science catch up to what a terrified, wheezing kid already knew is both validating and maddening. It’s infuriating that the adults responsible for keeping me safe so easily dismissed a child’s direct observation as imagination. "It's all in your head" was just a convenient way to avoid listening, or worse, admitting that the family stove was hurting me. I still appreciate cooking over a real flame. But whenever I see a gas burner lit today, I don't just see heat — I see a stark reminder of how easily children’s voices are brushed aside, and how long it took for the world to admit the obvious.
