I have decided to shut down my #mastodon instance, and all my public facing web services.

This will happen in 3 months time, on November 29, 2026, to allow everyone to backup and migrate.

The reason for this is that I can no longer trust:

the #Linux kernel
#Debian
rails
most #Foss projects

Additionally, I'm basically out of storage, it is unaffordable to purchase more, and no one is interested in donating to help.

Our bastion of free computing has been poisoned by fascist gen ai slop, and basically NONE of it can be trusted anymore.

It's impossible to vet slop from an ecosystem that is welcoming of it.

This makes it nearly impossible to update my systems, which makes it harder to pretend it's even remotely secure.

I'm fucking devestated - gutted by what has happened to computing, and I just do not have the resources to keep fighting.

Fuck all you #LLM boosters into the sun. May you learn the folly of your way and DO SOMETHING TO FIX IT!

I wonder what the first accidental [edit: non-military] mass casualty event caused by "ai" will be. Errant bombing? Collapsed bridge? Drinking water poisoning? Mass highway pileup? There's probably a polymarket bet for this. The longer we let this go on the higher the stakes will be.

@FlohEinstein@chaos.social One time when working a Dev job writing and fixing Java, I had this insane bug that kept cropping up, but seemingly had no cause. I decided I'd better walk away from the problem for a bit, so I opened up kijiji and wrote a classified ad looking for a witch doctor to reverse the curse on my code (which I had decided was a *mummy's curse*). I got two replies right away. One was from a friend who had correctly guessed I was behind the ad. The second was a Christian zealot who though I was dead serious and tried to get me to accept Jesus into my life. I think something was stuck in a cache somewhere in the CI pipeline.

No one wants it. The mayor and counsel lie about it with every breath saying it's not a done deal. The billboards are all over town. Myself and many members of my community will commit sabotage against it at every stage. This is a given.

Just now discovering the power and versatility of #diminished chords. Wow! Interestingly, if you pick a diminished chord, you will find an inversion of that chord by moving 3 frets up or down the neck. The next imbersion is another 3 frets up or down. If you pick any diminished chord at random, you have a 1 in 3 shot of it being the correct one.

@CheapPontoon Hello - musician with about 12 project on bandcamp, going back to 2009 here. IMO, it cannot be trusted. Like so many of the brands we knew & loved, bandcamp has been slurped up by venture capitalists. The majority of the original core team was let go. I cancelled my pro subscription the last time the company was sold. However, with all that said, it is still a platform that is (IMO) fair to artists - at least for now. They have recently begun cutting over their payment system to Stripe, which doesn't bode well. As others have said, download your purchased albums, just in case.

Most LLM generated code mostly misses the style or other parts of the code base because it's often too large for the context. We already received several AI generated PR's of which some if not most were denied. Same for Security reports, either invalid or a lot of duplicates. From Danig: +1 to that, we'll reject vibe coded contributions where the quality is bad or if it's clear the contributor is generating the whole thing using an LLM without understanding anything. We're generally okay with contributors who use LLMs responsibly and make sure to validate and understand what they're doing.
