So, the only way to clean up an industrial site in a sensitive environmental area ( #FerodoSite ) is to build a datacenter? Ummm... Makes perfect sense! 'Terrifying' 101-acre #datacentre plans would be 'heartbreaking', campaigners warn Liam Evans, BBC Wales, September 22, 2026 "A proposed data centre spanning 101 acres would have a 'heartbreaking' effect on the landscape and #wildlife, campaigners have warned. "Developers want to build the new centre between #Caernarfon and #YFelinheli in #Gwynedd , saying it could create more than 900 jobs during construction and a further 200 permanent roles. "But nearly 15,000 people signed a petition in opposition to the plans, with local campaigners saying the proposed development was too big and would lead to #NoisePollution and ruin the landscape. "A spokesperson for #CanolfanDdataMenai said it would 'transform and revitalise the long-derelict' site and offer significant employment, with plans currently out for public consultation. "Data centres are buildings full of powerful computers used to run digital services, from online banking to movie streaming. "The UK government classifies them as critical national infrastructure and, according to recent Senedd research, 'most jobs in the UK' are now reliant on them. "Planning documents show the proposed centre would include five main buildings for storing data with the highest of them standing at 30m (98ft). "But campaigners have raised concerns about water usage, the effect on the environment and how many jobs would go to local residents. "More than 100 people attended a public meeting on Saturday with many raising concerns. "Among those opposing the plans is Emyr Davies, whose house lies not far from where the boundary of the site would be, should it be approved. " 'Visually it would have a massive effect, not just for us here in Caernarfon but also in #Anglesey, and it would change the views of #Snowdonia forevermore,' he said." Wondering if people would sign this petition. There is a proposed massive #datacentre on the beautiful banks of the Menai Straits in N #Wales. There's so much wrong with thia. It's a SAC (special area of conservation). The nationalised water company Dwr Cymru have raised objections that there isn't a plan for the water... one director of the company has previous charges for 6 environmental crimes... read more on the link! Boosts welcome. #AI #LLM #environment #cymruhttps://www.change.org/p/menai-data-centre-say-no/

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages, it's all true! It's now basically inevitable that we'll have AGI superintelligence by the end of 2024. And there's a 10% chance this AGI superintelligence, which will basically be LLM software running on physical hardware that fills a massive data centre with the energy and water use of a small European country, will cause humans to go extinct by 2030. And by extinct, I don't mean as a result of climate change from the fossil fuel air pollution we're using to fuel it. Please don't think about that stuff! No, I mean by, erm... Things like hacking the power grid and such... Which would also presumably cause it to cease existing... Which wouldn't exactly be superintelligent. But... y'know... details! How will we ever stop it?! I mean, it's not like we live in a world where less intelligent creatures and even inanimate objects kill off more intelligent creatures every day. It's not like we live in a world where virii and microbes and bricks can kill off more intelligent creatures. Brains beat brawn every time! Put a statistician in a fight with an MMA champion and clearly the maths professor is going to win, right? And if that doesn't sound true when it's phrased like that, then you need to just shush for a moment and pretend that it does. And if one of our LLMs in a massive hyperscale AI data centre somehow magically became sentient, it's not like we could just shut off the water. Or the electricity. Or stop delivering massive quantities of gas and oil to the onsite gas turbines. Or just find the nearest Telstra pit and put a bloody shovel through the fibre optic cables that connect it to the outside world. So we need to immediately figure out ways to stop this happening! What's that? You say we could prevent this happening by just not building the massive AI data centres? You say we could tax the rich so they don't have the money to build massive AI data centres? No! We absolutely must not do that under any circumstances! See, our position is really quite straightforward. We're claiming our product poses an existential risk to humanity that justifies urgent action to mitigate the risk, but also simultaneously we don't want you to think it /genuinely/ poses an existential risk to humanity that /actually/ justifies urgent action that would be guaranteed mitigate the risk, such as not building massive AI data centres, or by not providing access to the ginormous quantities of water and land and energy and capital that our product which is causing this supposed threat depends on. So why say it? Mostly, because if we say things like: "We can make a product that could make massive monopolistic short-term profits in a few years, but there's a 10% chance it kills everyone alive, give us money to build it," then the Silicon Valley VCs and Wall Street bankers will throw literal billions our way. Whereas if we were to say: "We can make a product that solves a genuine problem and we have a sustainable business model for it that will deliver stable long-term returns," then they won't. Because under American capitalism, "a chance it kills every person" is seen to be a worthwhile risk to take in exchange for short-term profits. I really hope that clarifies our argument. #AI #LLM #DataCenter #DataCentre #GenAI #tech #Anthropic #OpenAI #Google #Microsoft #Gemini #Copilot #Claude #AGI #capitalism #aimarketing #BigTech #tech

They just refuse to mention that there's other #datacentre cooling options. Using water is flat out wasteful. It's cheaper to run but environmentally costly. Here's one option out of many https://geothermalinsider.com/learn/geothermal-data-centers/ It's obscene that we'd allow this to occur on the second driest continent on the planet, only behind Antarctica. Our politicians are failing completely #auspol and probably don't even know there's other options. https://youtu.be/qML-LugQIEI

"the #datacentre boom is zeroing in on one province: #Alberta. The prairie province accounts for 93 per cent of all planned data centre capacity in #Canada, in large part because of its cheap natural gas-powered electricity. Plus, Alberta’s #UCP government has been courting the AI industry, offering corporate tax incentives to data centre builders and exempting them from otherwise routine #environmental impact assessments." https://breachmedia.ca/inside-the-rising-country-wide-movement-against-ai-data-centres/#abpoli #cdnpoli #BigTech #WaterisLife

#DataCentre #tech #EU In practice, the proposal means a data centre operating overnight on Germany's coal-linked grid could still claim to counterbalance its emissions with certificates associated with solar power generated during the day in Spain. Some accounting and climate experts argue that this kind of matching does little to reduce actual emissions https://tradersunion.com/news/financial-news/show/2551575-eu-data-centre-climate-rules/ #ClimateChange #UpheavalClimate #ClimateInstability #ClimateReversal #MassAtrocity #ecology #environment #climate

English – The Conversation | Australia’s economy slows as households tighten their belts, while AI investment surges by Stella Huangfu, Associate Professor, School of Economics, University of Sydney AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Australia’s economy grew only 0.3 % in the first quarter of 2026, a slowdown from the 0.9 % pace at the end of 2025, while GDP per‑person fell 0.1 %—a sign that households are not feeling richer despite overall growth. Higher fuel and fertiliser prices linked to the Middle‑East conflict, the end of government fuel discounts, and rising energy costs pushed households to spend more on essentials and cut back on discretionary items. The strongest area was private investment, especially in machinery, data‑centre infrastructure and artificial‑intelligence projects in New South Wales and Victoria, whereas net trade dragged growth – exports fell due to coal and iron‑ore disruptions while imports rose, partly from data‑processing equipment. Government spending fell and mining output declined after Cyclone Koji, while consumer‑facing services such as retail, accommodation, food, arts and recreation remained weak. The fall in per‑capita GDP raises the risk of a “per‑person recession” if the trend continues into the June quarter, and it signals that higher interest rates are already weighing on spending; consequently the Reserve Bank is expected to hold rates at its June meeting, balancing lingering inflation pressures against an increasingly split‑economy where digital‑tech sectors expand while many consumer sectors stay under strain.
