I remember someone was talking about some states and their anti-trans bills and how they would be just as accurate to call them the anti-Susie (or whatever their name was) Bill, since in some cases, there was like one known instance of this “issue” causing this stupid moral panic - in the entire fucking state. I swear, the party that likes to talk about everyone else being a snowflake is constantly finding non-issues and things that are barely even a thing to get all worked up about. These are the same exact types that had fainting spells in the 80s over things like heavy metal lyrics and Dungeons and Dragons and supposed satanic cults and lots of other fantastical nonsense. In the 90s, especially after Columbine, they clutched their pearls over outsider kids wearing trenchcoats, playing videogames and listening to Marilyn Manson. And now they are basically shaping an entire nation-state around women’s sports, FFS [1]. Keep in mind that these are the same group that sneer at things like the WNBA and women’s soccer, and that no one watches women’s sports. Now they are calling in the fainting couches over something they mocked and derided (and probably still do). [1] I say that because some of the voters that vote R claim it’s their #1 issue. I still am just agog at this notion. Imagine being so privileged that you have zero skin in the game for trans, and it’s your #1 issue? How the fuck is that even a thing?

Okay you hit on a much bigger issue- swing states. IMHO the fact that ‘swing states’ are a thing is a problem that we should fix. Why isn’t EVERY state a ‘swing state’? Why is the voting outcome of certain states essentially prewritten? THAT is a problem. EVERY state should be in play. Some of that blame rests with lazy voters who will blindly vote red or blue without consideration of the actual candidates. A bigger blame though rests much deeper in our electoral system. It’s not the electoral college that takes blame, it’s first-past-the-post voting (IE simple majority). FPTP voting heavily rewards coalitions who rally behind a single candidate. So for example if fiscal conservatives, social conservatives, and libertarians all say ‘let’s elect the Republican’ while liberals (for example, hypothetical) split up into the Democrats and the Greens, the Republican will win EVERY time. This is a problem because it means more often than not you’re not voting FOR someone, you’re voting AGAINST someone. Recent DNC nominees have been a perfect example. Look at Kamala- she was polling at 2% before she got nominated, but she still got a huge % of the vote simply because she wasn’t Trump. DNC could have put forth a keg of stale beer as their candidate and it’d have gotten 30% of the popular vote because those people were voting AGAINST Trump, not FOR the DNC. And THAT’s a problem, because it’s forcing people to vote for someone they don’t actually support. The solution is dump FPTP and switch to something like Instant Runoff Voting. In most suggested flavors of IRV, you don’t have a primary- you have a large ballot with everyone who gained enough signatures to be on the ballot. Ideally there’d be 8-10 candidates. You then vote for as many or as few as you like in order of priority. Thus you can vote FOR the guy you actually want, without losing your vote AGAINST the guy you don’t want. To count the votes, all the #1 votes are added up and you see if a candiate got 50%. If none did, you find whoever voted for the least popular candidate, tear off all their #1 votes and reallocate their ballots based on the #2 votes. Again you look for 50%. Repeat as many times as necessary until you have a winner.

That’s a lot of words to say you failed the 10 second ask, and that you can’t accept that this is a pointless shitpost. Do your own 40 week and 9 month count, and I ask, are they the same song? Because mine is. That song was a #1 for 5 weeks. It covers both options, and that might well happen for most people. It’s just a fun diversion.

No, that’s why this is an imperfect measure of a song that might have spent weeks at #1. I’ve already explained this like 5 times. Doesn’t anyone read comments?

I chopped my feet off* because some of you don't like feet pics, or you're just too cheap to pay for them. *chopped off with my photo framing skills. Not lopped off with a sword Edit: most important part that I can't believe I forgot to mention... They have pockets!

It’s time to make lists of people. All those who spent the last 5 years propagandising for Russia to demanding Europe stops its defence spending. Isn’t it also about 5 years that there is the War next to EU’s border? (Russia vs Ukraine) There is also trump that threaten EU, and do whatever “he wants” I would really want to see more united EU, because now Eu is still subordinate to USA Entry #1: the entire .ml user base I don’t know even how I should react to it, I don’t consider the entire .ml instance as something bad, I can see why some instance defederate from them, but that is it

Starting on #TourDeFleece Stage #1 I finished off 2.5 oz of 50:50 Husky:wool blend on the e-spinner. This is 390yd of ~30-40 wpi singles which I plan to ply 2:1 with 100% husky yarn, spun on my Turkish spindle, trying to work up to 20 wpi. My goal is to pair this with my ~20 wpi heather gray 100% Rio husk yarn in a double-knit pattern. Also spent time preparing and organizing a month's worth of spinning to come! I have plenty of projects to keep me busy. #TDF2026 #Chiengora

@mdione@en.osm.town @heidilifeldman@mastodon.social I was at two nearby universities for some time. Many US universities have their own police forces and tasks are divided between them depending on where the event happens and who's involved. So the police did act here, but as in many cases it came to nothing. The universities themselves don't have prisons, and their scope for penalty is expulsion at the most. Institutional reputation is of concern in their decisions and processes, as are relationships with supporters and donors. Some enjoy good relations with the surrounding town or city; some don't. Thus some university police forces are concerned with things like protecting the campus or students from "townies", or with containing students and football visitors so they don't cause too much trouble off campus. I had a few small opportunities to see the campus police at work. First time was when I was approached by someone asking for money because he'd just come out of prison and had nothing. It was early in the morning, still dark, while I was waiting for a shuttle bus to the airport. A campus police officer came over and intervened. I mentioned my disbelief in the man's story and the officer laughed, then explained that yeah, the prisons in the US really do turf you out on the street with not even a bus fare and clothes to ward off the cold and rain. Second time was when I was Suspect #1 after a museum item turned up on ebay. The last record we had of it was from decades earlier; I had never actually seen it myself. But I had unsupervised access to the collection store so they had to question me. Eventually things turned around and I supplied forensic advice over several weeks of clues coming in, and recommended further clues that they look for; they didn't know how to do it because their work is about people, not about property.

Doubt many organizations have failed as badly at their goals as LW/EA has recently. They are/were too weird for people to never notice. The “safeguards” espoused by this crowd, always seemed to me to be more philosophical/spiritual than practical anyway, the most “orthodox” view is that no training is safe since the AI could discover magic and the cheat codes to the universe, so even air-gapping would be insufficient, in that view any participation in development must come with a hefty dose of cognitive dissonance. On a more pragmatic note, I would note that even short of Intelligence, those incidents highlight those tools are still dangerous, and since they are unconstrained and ill-defined, can produce surprising outcomes especially if you throw lot’s of inference time (money) at them. There isn’t really a universe where bots have both access to the internet (user input, both in training and live) and a collection of build/cli tools (which can run said untrusted user input), while being guaranteed to be harmless. It’s like a grand automation of some of the worst engineering practices. I find the “reasoning about the test environment” parts often included in write up of the hugging-face incident to be highly credulous, And I would be extremely surprised if not all the information was included in the task prompt (which also explains chosen usernames as “Open AI researcher #1” and so on.) It’s the ELIZA/parrot thing, acting surprised “How did it guess?!?”, when all of the info was provided. I’m not entirely encouraged by the latest batch of sex-cult smearing (well mostly accurate) they are receiving at the WH, since it’s probably just an expedient way of dismissing their voice, without addressing the larger issues of AI, hence probably in service of pushing forwards with AI.

Called the scheduling line for my doc. Was in queue position #9. It slowly counted down to position #1. Then it made the ringing sound and I thought I'd get a person. Instead the system booted me out to wait in queue position #8. And this is to re-schedule an appointment they had to cancel, not me. "Your call is very important to us and we apologize for this longer than usual hold time. Please continue to hold and your call will be answered shortly." I suppose it could be worse-- they could be directing me to a 'portal' or worse, using an AI like my dermatologist.
