@benroyce@mastodon.social @vicgrinberg@mastodon.social Well said. The cynic sees only pointless optimism. They think people who try to be positive just sit on their arses claiming that just "thinking positive thoughts" would make the world better. Of course it won't. But what cynics don't get is that there are people who realise that being positive not just involves thoughts but also actions. The world can become a better place if we put the effort in and don't let disappointments along the way stop us from trying.

Even Clacton itself couldn't possibly be worse off if they elected Binface.

Funnily enough left-wordle didn't like the starting word I went for today so I had to start with a slightly different but similar word. So the two games don't use an identical dictionary of "allowed" words.

@splitbrain@fedi.splitbrain.org Agree about the "helpful guessing". Don't present anything as "the answer" unless you're sure. The internet *is* a very large place though and there is a pretty good chance that a question might get lost in the noise. Boosting is of course a great way of helping a person's question get exposure. You could also ask questions. The dialogue may help a person see their own question from a different angle, "explain it to the teddybear" or "rubber duck debugging" style.

I love my kitteh but dang she can be thick sometimes.

I just went out to hang out some washing and I discovered Thebe had just caught a shrew. It was still completely unharmed and alert.

Took me an attempt or two but I managed to pick it up. Shrew in hand I walk out of the garden, over to the wall, and give it its freedom and it happily scarpers away to do whatever it is shrews do.

Thebe?

She's still sniffing around the same spot. "Now you see it, now you don't" 🤣

@alexadeswift@lgbtqia.space It is possible to hold the position that murder is wrong, and that every murderer must be held to account, and simultaneously be of the opinion that, to put it sarcastically, "it couldn't have happened to a nicer gal"... This case being a perfect example. Murdering Ann Widdecombe was wrong. Her murderer must face the law, but don't ask me to feel sad for the excretable witch.

After reading what happened in Berlin I've come to the conclusion that we need to stop tolerating queerness. WHAT? Yes, I'm serious. Hear me out. "Tolerate"? Fuck off with your "tolerating". Tolerating is what you do with something that is iffy. Tolerating means you don't like it, but you allow it to happen anyway. To hell with that. Start ACCEPTING that queerness is an inextricable part of humanity and start celebrating it, or get lost.

This day last week we were travelling back home to #Ireland from #Vancouver One of our party was carrying medicine that needs to be kept cool and the flight was going to be 8 1/2 hours. Hot tip: in the airport they sell salmon. In the bottom of the fridge that contains the pre packed salmon they store ice packs. If you ask nicely they will let you have one.

@veronica@explains.social I spent today finding out how to create an elastic job to pull data from a complex database into a simplified "reporting" database without clobbering the live data to death during business hours and then writing several stored procedures to make this maintainable. I can't see how any "AI" could have applied the 18 years of intimate knowledge I have of that DB schema and its quirks and produced something one of my colleagues could follow and maintain.

@alice@lgbtqia.space 1/2 By far the biggest problem with LLMs is how they were presented as "knowledge bases" rather than what they actually are: data churners. A "knowledge base" ought to have a way to determine the quality of the data from which produces answers. It should be able to distinguish fact from fiction, truth from falsehood. LLMs can't do anything like that. They churn all the data in their possession, good, bad or bat shit insane, and regurgitate it in response to a prompt. .

@hn100@social.lansky.name That was my assessment from the start of the hype. Like every tool I've seen that promised it would let you develop things "10x faster", they always tend to speed up routine tasks at first, but then you have to hack around their limitations to such an extent that not only do you lose all the gains you appeared to make at the start, but you get so bogged down that ultimately it costs you money. Always been like that, no sign of it changing with AI either.

"Ann Widdecomb was a great debater" Which is a great illustration of the fact that debating is no way to get to truth. You can win a debate and be utterly wrong. "People liked her" How do you separate a person from the points of view they publicly embrace? She had been called "charming" and "great fun to be around". The only way I can imagine seeing her like that is to treat her politics as "just a game" and ignore how they affect the people targeted by them.

#BBCNews keeps breathlessly reporting on the imminent nuptials of one "Taylor Swift".

To be sure I hope the day is a happy one for the two of them but, BBC, this is hardly the Event Of The Decade. A singer is getting married and a bunch of celebs are invited. Meh. It's nice to see "good news" stories but there surely are more interesting nice things happening to more interesting nice people.
