@mwl@io.mwl.io if the subtitles are anything like what are broadcast alongside TV programs they'll be utterly awful. Yes, I watch TV with subtitles on. The amount of misspellings is terrible since AI took over. Generally names and places are wrong, and the occasional but often word pronounced with different accents are wrong. Some words joined up, other split into many. Get actual transcribers back who check their work I say.

Just had somebody request assistance with an error accessing their 365 account but sent be screenshots of the Gemini output of them googling for the problem. something something, cognitive decline, something something Naturally, they're getting asked to send me screenshots of the actual problem before I begin to help, and get charged for the pleasure of wasting my time in doing so. #StopGenAI

I think anybody "responsibly using AI" in software development are forgetting something... Anthrophic are watermarking generated text, I expect others will follow. One would expect it only to be a short leap to begin watermarking generated code too. So, how long till they go "See the watermarks? That's our project now." And we say goodbye to -insert name of project that hasn't resisted AI here- ? I suspect sometime around when the money dries up and they need a fresh injection of demonstratable products. "But licensing!" I hear you cry. Don't be silly, they haven't respected licenses since day zero.

@sudonem@infosec.exchange Thanks. Pretty much what I thought. And I have already questioned them about SQLExpress. I know little of this business, but my experience so far is they know very little past windows applications use SQL (or SQL Express) so it's the only option. Ohhhhh how wrong they are. Fortunately, this is during an evaluation period and I will be telling my client this application is not fit for purpose.

@ricardo@mastodon.bsd.cafe is that today? Great, I'm taking the day off and chopping wood instead then. Also, sysadmins that use LLMs in their workflow do not get to celebrate today. Their job is to pick up the slack where we relax. Don't know what to do? Well then.

@gbraad@mastodon.social @kitten_tech@fosstodon.org @doctormo@floss.social still, polite to rate limit. But sadly the answer probably is "it's vibe coded" and/or "we need to get the entire Internet's content as quickly as possible" Considerations such as multiple pages showing the same or similar content such as a git repo are not considered, and when an AI web scraper hammers a git repo for all it's commits since the dawn of time it can take the whole thing offline.

@mathew@universeodon.com @mhoye@cosocial.ca I don't think that would work this side of the Atlantic. Perhaps, but unlikely. And with the price of new hardware skyrocketing, I'm pretty sure older boards are going to be around much longer, and secureboot is not required. And for everything else there's coreboot, or hacking your main board BIOS/uefi. And, of course, distros without systemd. I'm not saying it can't affect the masses, but there are fundamental flaws in even trying to enforce it. Chances are most of us who put any kind of workaround in place are largely going to be ignored by authoritative bodies. We aren't the type of people who visit the types of website they're trying to protect the children from.

@Greylinux@floss.social it's a great idea! Probably one of the better distros to use as a server base to be honest. You just set up the minimal of what you need and let the containers do the real work. Perfect distro for this workflow in my opinion Source: even though I generally use FreeBSD and jails for my containers, I do have a couple of Alpine servers than run dedicated tasks, one of them being to run containers I can't run in jails for various reasons.

Yo #Database nerds! Quick question - would approx 8 seconds be a reasonable transaction time when returning 5 million rows of a single column over a VPN connection ? Standalone Windows Server VM (ew), spinning rust SAS drives , generally well performing all round. Loads of ram and cores, but guess what... it's SQLExpress so no matter what I give it it won't be used. I think 8 seconds is OK.... I'm right, right? Please note I am not asking for ways to improve this, I am asking if this would be considered acceptable given the constraints. Basically, I need to tell some software developers to make their database calls more efficient and not blame the servers. (If your application needs to make loads of database calls returning every result in the table so the client application can do some work, maybe investigate ways to improve this!!! (Oh, and don't use MSSQL (and definitely not SQLExpress))) #SysAdmin #MSSQL #SQLExpress

@mhoye@cosocial.ca I still don't see how something like this could possibly be made to work. Windows, Mac, fine - stop a service running and the whole thing crashes, but open source OSes, almost by definition, are about user choice. Don't want something running in the background? Fine turn it off, no bother. If age verification is required, but likely is going to be on device, then we'll just make a service that says "Yes, over 18" when asked. If age verification requires a third party cloud service, then well done they've just broken the internet.
