Hi Mastodon 👋 We're VPSPioneer, a small hosting company serving customers across Europe: web hosting, reseller hosting and cloud VPS. Here we'll share practical, no-fluff guides on Linux, server admin, Plesk, DirectAdmin, WHMCS, DNS and email deliverability, and join conversations with the #SelfHosted and #SysAdmin crowd. "I need the full DevOps workflow to publish the site." "It's a static site. Here are the SFTP credentials to upload the files you have, which were generated by the client's SSG." "You don't understand. I need to upload the site; I need the DevOps procedure." "No, you don't understand. It's generated by BSSG; all you have to do is upload the output via SFTP into the FreeBSD jail and the deploy is automatic." Silence. "But how does the deploy bot handle it?" Silence. The person who hired him (as an intern) gets on the line: "Just humor him, the kid is sharp-he's really good with AI!" I tell him we're talking about two completely different things. He fires back: "If you can't keep up with him, I think you need to update your skills. That's what we're paying you for." And that was that. I've decided that for 80 Euros a year - while providing a dedicated FreeBSD jail, over 100GB of hosting, backups, monitoring, and custom BSSG tweaks - they can definitely find someone more "up to date" elsewhere. #TGIF #IT #SysAdmin #HorrorStories

SmartOS: The illumos Way of Thinking About Servers A practical look at SmartOS, illumos, zones, LX compatibility and the way this operating system approaches servers. Not a complete guide, just enough to understand why I like it. https://it-notes.dragas.net/2026/09/28/smartos-the-illumos-way-of-thinking-about-servers/ #SmartOS #illumos #Hosting #Server #IT #SysAdmin #OwnYourData #ITNotes #Tutorial

Your playbook failed. Management wants a root cause. You have 30 seconds. Introducing larvitz.bofh, an Ansible collection that returns Bastard Operator From Hell excuses: "Root cause: The mainframe tripped over an unhandled SIGSEGV in the automated espresso machine." Seedable, so each host keeps its story straight. Bonus category: Deutsche Bahn. https://codeberg.org/Larvitz/ansible-bofh #Ansible #BOFH #SysAdmin #DevOps #Codeberg #Humor #Linux

chat what do you use for monitoring your servers? i'm looking for something that's small, light, not "ai-native" (🤮), and is easy to set up to watch http requests and what caddy/nginx is doing with them, and optionally/ideally other traffic like ssh and wireguard 🔄 boosts appreciated #selfhosting #sysadmin #cloud

Another update from running my Mastodon server, mustard.blog. After I blocked direct API account registration, the automated signup activity changed tactics almost immediately: a rejected API signup was followed by the normal browser signup flow, including rules acceptance, username lookup, account creation, and email confirmation. That showed me the existing honeypots and timing checks weren’t enough for a client capable of reproducing normal browser behavior. I’ve now moved hCaptcha to before account creation, while keeping web signup and manual approval available. API signup remains blocked, and existing OAuth/rate-limit protections stay in place as additional layers. No evidence of server compromise or unauthorized admin access was found. The main lesson this time: blocking one path doesn’t stop automation if another path is available — defenses have to follow the workflow, not just individual indicators. The little mustard planet survives another round. 🌭🪐 #Mastodon #Fediverse #SelfHosting #SysAdmin #Security #OpenSource

Traditional hosting company: “We had a Linux crash. Or maybe systemd. Or KVM. Possibly a kernel issue. There is also a non-zero chance aliens interfered with our servers. We’re not entirely sure what happened. Sorry for the inconvenience.” OpenBSD Amsterdam: “We had a crash. One of the OpenBSD developers looked at it and is now patching OpenBSD so it won’t happen again.” Who’s the boss now? 😎 Thank you, @OpenBSDAms@mastodon.bsd.cafe ! #OpenBSD #RunBSD #IT #SysAdmin

Hello. We make DNS Notify. It emails you when a DNS record, nameserver set, TLS certificate or domain registration changes, and shows the old value next to the new one. We built it for our own domains first. Most of the work went into the email it does not send: TTL changes, rotated answers, SOA serial bumps and routine renewals all stay quiet. The scanner and lookups are free, no account: https://dnsnotify.com #DNS #sysadmin #introduction
