Level 0x2F, Neutral Evil, Technomage. I love UNIX systems, and build carrier grade networks for fun and profit. I'm also a musician, historian, avid gardener, terrible photographer, and a pretty decent cook. Lover
of fuzzy animals of all sorts, but especially the kleptomaniacal, tube shaped ones. I have a dog named Hazard Dax of whom I will share a near endless supply of pics.

I want to make one thing abundantly clear. I do not hate AI because I think it is gonna go all Skynet and kill all humans. The people who believe that shit are morons. I hate AI because it makes its users stupid. I hate it because it is enabling a survalence state. I hate it because deepfakes and AI slop are filling the world with garbage and propoganda, and making the world a shittier place to live. I hate it because the mega AI datacenters are awful, resource hogging neighbors that no one should have to live near. I hate it because..... well, I hope you get it. I'm not one of those doomsday cult members who thinks AI is an emerging intelligence secretly plotting to kill us all. Just wanted to make that abundantly clear.

It seems that @pixelfed@mastodon.social has reversed course: https://mastodon.social/@pixelfed/117350705262301318 Even though it is software I don't use, I am glad to see an alternative social media platform opting to stay AI Free. People that want to use alternatives to the AI ridden corporate created options probably consider the AI use factor strongly in their decision when hey select an alternative. We didn't all come to the Fediverse so we could make it as shitty as the mainstream social networks.

Okay, I just wrote what I call fedimemer, a program that allows me to reply to other posts (or just post on its own) with memes, alt text is already set, and I can add optional comments. All I have to do now, is gather up a collection of memes. This seems more efficient than searching for, downloading, and posting a meme manually. I usually don't remember to add alt text, and I never keep the files in a sane, easily searchable place. Now, I just run 'fedimemer -l' and find the one from the list that I want! Like any good techy, I can work really hard to be lazy!

I've been using and programming computers for decades now. I'm almost ashamed to admit I just figured out how to make the cursor disappear this morning. printing "\033[?25l" --turns the cursor off printing "\033[?25h" --turns it back on Convert to your language of choice as needed. I of course now have to bolt this onto about 3 dozen Perl scripts. Incidentally, this came about because I decided I wanted a command line stopwatch app that didn't suck. The cursor made it ugly, so I figured out how to get rid of it. Necessity is the mother of invention. #UNIX #computers #programming

I love #Perl I really do, and contrary to popular belief it is almost always possible to write clean, readable Perl. Except when you have shit like this: for my $foo (@{$bar->baz}) { my $qux = $foo->quux; } That shit drives me fucking bonkers. I'll forget the next time I need to do something like that, I always do.

Job hunt grousing
@NotYourSysadmin@infosec.exchange I will play devil's advocate for "Remote, within these states," simply because US Tax law is, quite frankly, insane. The company may not have had sufficient need/time/resources to make themselves able to hire a W-2 employee outside their established state(s). I have had several jobs where I was a 1099-NEC employee for months because the paperwork hadn't gone through to make me eligible to be a W-2 employee. I usually became a W-2 employee within 6-9 months. Only the biggest companies have the time and resources to make themselves open to remote work in all fifty states and all US territories. Everything else you said? Yeah, fuck that noise.

Asking the hive mind, because maybe this already exists. I need the organ solo from Inagodadavida, on a seamless repeat. Like, start at the very end of the drum solo, and either do the whole thing and loop, or progress much slower through the phases of the organ solo itself. I may have to mix this on my own, and I may have to start it with Toccata and Fugue and fade into Inagodadavida. I have three weeks to figure this out. Wish me luck!

Tried to watch Coyote vs Acme the other day. What a piece of shit movie. It's not funny for the same reason Tiny Tunes and later Tom and Jerry weren't funny: Too much plot. They ruined a working formula with too much plot. You can't take falling anvils, rocket skates, and exploding birdseed, and attach it to a full on legal battle with an underlying conspiracy, chock full of dialogue and expect it to work. It falls flat on its face. Coyote vs Acme is boring, really and terribly boring. It is sprinkled with tiny bits of fan service that seem completely forced at the best of times. The coyote never speaks, yet is the single most verbose character in the movie. And I do not mean this as a compliment. There is no humor behind his repeated Acme product induced torments. And..... fuck, I'm bored telling you how boring it is. I didn't even make it halfway through before I shut it off. Just, save your time and money.

nuintari's rules of networking 0x35: The network engineer is guilty until they identify the real culprit. Said culprit is then presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond any shadow of a doubt by the network engineer. It's not fair, get used to it, this is your life now.

My sister is back in the hospital this morning. She managed to get a sunburn so bad yesterday that she probably has an infection and they are concerned she may turn septic. Right now, I provide maybe 1/4 of my sister's care. My mother does the rest, mostly because I live 30 miles away, and my mother lives two miles away. I have to confess that one of my biggest fears in life is that when my mother is gone, my sister's care will fall to me completely. I love my sister, but if you look at my mother's phone call history, she receives no less than five, and usually more calls a day from my sister. My sister needs a LOT of care. I'm absolutely terrified of that burden becoming exclusively my cross to bear.. But lately, I'm not so sure it'll ever come to that, if you take my meaning. I almost feel horrible to say it, but it's quite a relief to expect my sister to be the next death in the family.

@oxy@social.bsdlab.au That is indeed the appropriate reaction. These kinds of operations don't employ actual engineers, people who consider failure modes into their designs. So you get networks that are fully redundant, on paper, at layer 3. But physically? The fiber to all three upstreams leave the building in the same conduit.

@litchralee_v6@ipv6.social @philpem@digipres.club Its not "technically" a thing, a Winmodem was a slang term for a CPU bound soft modem that only worked in Windows. There were also Linmodems, same shitshow, but the manufacturer provided a Linux driver that was probably hell to get working. But your CPU performance always tanked while a softmodem was running. Not awful on a Pentium 2, pure misery on anything older. I always bought external, serial modems. They were the real deal. I always got better performance.

@litchralee_v6@ipv6.social Gateway was leeps and bounds better than the others. E-Machines and PB were about the same. EM's had shittier/lower spec hardware, but were far more standards compliant. You could usually get Linux running on an E-Machine. The Win Modem wasn't going to work, but the rest probably would. Packard Bell's often had terrible shit like a combo modem + sound card on a single ISA board. The hardware was almost always crazy proprietary like that. There were Packard Bell's that couldn't run NetBSD. But used Gateways made fine home servers, and were even decent desktops when new. Especially once the Pentium 2 became the standard, their quality actually increased a lot.
