I have exciting #FroggoFriday news… The Chime Frogs are back! I’ve seen plenty of tree frogs in their other usual nooks and crannies after that harsh winter weather earlier this year, but I had not seen or heard the group that typically roosts in our wind chimes. 🎶Guess who’s back, back again? Chime frog’s back, tell a fren. :frogdance:

This velvety little bub, a free-tailed bat baby (Tadarida brasiliensis), has been in my care for a couple of weeks now along with a few other babies from his roost, all only a couple of hours or days old. They are working on their gains and becoming ever more curious about what’s going on around them. 🥰 I hope everyone had a good #Baturday that left you as comfy as my #BatsInBlankets 🖤🦇

Later this year will be my 45th birthday. For decades now, I’ve known that I want to get a tattoo of a 45 rpm record insert/adapter that day. So you would think that by now I would have noodled out a design that doesn’t look like a triskelion of dongs 🤦🏻‍♀️

You should know that I’m absolutely a dork when referencing them in person because I always say “Tada!!!” because of their scientific name (Tadarida brasiliensis). I regret nothing. 🤪🦇🤓

@futurebird@sauropods.win once, while living close enough to Cleveland’s terminal tower that the glow kept me up at night if I didn’t close curtains, I had a neighbour admonish me for letting my dog constantly run loose. This was frustrating, as it was many years before I actually had my first dog. I kept trying to convince her it was a stray, but she would regularly hassle me about it. Eventually I figured I should try to locate this stray to see if there was an actual owner. She called me one day saying it was digging in her garden right then, so I grabbed an improvised leash and ran out. Y’all, it was a coyote. And I was not going to try to check for a collar or microchip 😅

For weeks now I’ve been vaguely hearing about “the bad girl” playing for Spain in the world cup. Which was hella confusing for a LOT of reasons until I happened to see the player’s name written out. Lamine Yamal not La niña mala 😅 When an 80-HD polyglot doesn’t care enough to pay that much attention to the sportsball. Oopsies. But I feel like my Kopfkino was better anyways.

#Vultures! In the wetlands! #BirdCallOut I was at the back of my little bog after releasing a few bats the other day just after sunset, when I noticed two of my local black vultures having a bit of a cuddle atop a tree snag at the edge of the water. Volume up for some swamp sounds. 🖤 I love that my backyard corner of the world is an overlap of black vultures and turkey vultures.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org it’s like a damned near universal truth that any vinyl collection will at some point have at least one copy of that album. I have three copies currently, but I’m afraid that if I go check there will be yet another spontaneously manifested copy. I have never actually purchased a copy. They just appear. I’ve even gifted a copy to someone, and still somehow had n+1.

RE: https://cupoftea.social/@MakersHour/116971018220047406 A5: Predictably (for me) it would be the John C. Campbell Folk School. As a cross-discipline / polycrafty person there is at least one workshop being hosted there on an given day/week by somone who has dedicated their life to honing those skills. And the co-best thing about being there is the communal good vibes with all of the other learners and instructors at the activities outside of the workshops. So yeah if I was granted something like that, send me to Brasstown, NC 😅 @MakersHour@cupoftea.social #MakersHour

@colinpurrington@flipping.rocks the types of insects consumed also varies pretty drastically even between similar looking species in the same environment. I went down the rabbit hole of data tables based on fecal samples and necropsies when researching micro chiropteran neonate formulas, and they tend to enjoy a well rounded buffet of insects within their respective niches! That said I still cackle like mad every time I release one to join the local anti-bitey air squad.

@colinpurrington@flipping.rocks I don’t remember fireflies standing out in any of the bat species tables I was looking at, and that sh/would have caught my eye. But since I was only looking at a handful of bat species, that doesn’t mean they’re not in there! I still have the printouts and I’ll take a look if they pop up in any of the data sets I have in the coming days!

@Sharksonaplane@mastodon.sandwich.net Ha! This neighbour was not one to let a little thing like facts or direct evidence disrupt her ire! Her direct response was “What do you take me for, some kind of idiot‽ This is not LOONEY TUNES, young lady!” And then she actually harrumphed. She did eventually change her tune and would leave messaged on my answering machine (yeah, I’m that old) that I should come get my “Coyote” (with an audible eyeroll). I’m also convinced that it wasn’t the ‘yote digging and shitting in her garden, but rather the feral cats she was feeding. And that the ‘yotes were probably helping control that population while also stealing their snackies. So… Yeah, 🤦🏻‍♀️. I moved not too long after, and I’m hoping the next person who got that phone number was as amused as I was. @futurebird@sauropods.win

@fullywoolly@mastodon.social their nails are very much like those of a kitten! So yes, kind of a translucent white on this species. The their thumb nails, so the ones at the top of their wings, even have to be trimmed in captivity if they don’t wear them down enough climbing. Because otherwise they curve too much causing them to snag on things. Which is very familiar to people who have cats or dogs! That’s only really an issue for bats in longer term rehabilitative care for mobility issues though ☺️ Bonus information: the long white hairs on their toes have only recently been discovered to glow under (long-wave) uv light. The video you saw of them flapping under their lobster stuffy is a good, if silly, example of roosting behaviour for crevice bats. Crevice bats are the species that like to roost in caves and tight crevices. These pups are just a bit silly because normally they would do this vertically, and not on the ground. Because they’ve been in care since their very earliest days, they feel safe in their enclosure to do things they would be too afraid of in a natural setting. But those “stay safe” insticts do kick in once they are released to the wild.
