@MakersHour@cupoftea.social Q5: I tend not to make many kits because I have a habit of ‘short cutting’ instructions. Do you always follow instructions, or are you a basher/hacker-about-er? If you’re teaching someone, would you expect them to always follow the instructions? #MakersHour I try to follow instructions, but it depends how obvious I think the process is. I think it's better to follow instructions if you're learning, then you can choose to ignore them once you have a certain level of skill.

#MakersHour Q5: I tend not to make many kits because I have a habit of ‘short cutting’ instructions. Do you always follow instructions, or are you a basher/hacker-about-er? Instructions? LOL... I do the odd electronics kit and generally do follow the intended plan for those, but often hack/mod on top of that. Mostly I don't do kits. If you’re teaching someone, would you expect them to always follow the instructions? I would be disappointed if they did and would consider myself a failure as a teacher. @MakersHour@cupoftea.social

If you’re teaching someone, would you expect them to always follow the instructions? #MakersHour To the first question: I do follow the instructions if I'm baking. I might adapt a little bit when canning. Mending and cooking stuff I know? Instructions are suggestions. To the second: it depends: Inexperienced people make clumsy mistakes, particularly in the kitchen. People who already know what they're doing will be like me, and adapt to their tastes or tools. That's fine. @MakersHour@cupoftea.social

@Andy@tenforward.social This is very true, and often forgotten by some who teach. #MakersHour

Q4: I have also worked in education (hence the learning theme). How would you go about teaching your creative/maker skills to other interested people? A4: I spent from 2018 to July last year training new entrants to my department so have some experience in this! My view on it is that how *I* want to train is irrelevant, it’s how *they* want to learn that’s important. A trainer should adapt their style to suit the learner. I’ve taught specific topics in multiple different ways, yes, I have my preference, but it’s not about me. #makershour @MakersHour@cupoftea.social

@MakersHour@cupoftea.social A4 one of the best jobs I ever had was at the University of Stirling where I worked as a chaplain. I had a sewing group called Patches4Peace and I taught mending, sewing and transformation of garments. They were such lovely students and it was a fun group. #MakersHour

@MakersHour@cupoftea.social Q3: On that theme, one of my reasons for making is I 'Make to Learn’. How do you go about learning new things/skills? #MakersHour I often watch videos, sometimes look in books, and then get better with practice.

Q4: @MakersHour@cupoftea.social I have also worked in education (hence the learning theme). How would you go about teaching your creative/maker skills to other interested people? A4: I tend to go with a ‘show and tell’ process of demonstrating. The learning is broken down into bite sized steps and worked through in stages with the learner watching, having a go, and asking questions. The processes are then practised and guided until the learner is happy. I would also make adjustments to my methods to suit the needs of the learner at each stage until they were happy with it. #MakersHour

Q3: On that theme, one of my reasons for making is I 'Make to Learn’. How do you go about learning new things/skills? A3: Depends what it is. I really like just giving something a go and seeing what happens! However, that’s not always wise, especially if I’m working on the bike! So I tend to do some research, which could be books, online reading or videos. Alongside all the crap on YouTube, there are so many people who are willing to share their knowledge. When I fixed the washing machine a few months back, I twice watched a video on it and then successfully did it! #makershour@MakersHour@cupoftea.social

Q1: @MakersHour@cupoftea.social Good evening (or morning, or afternoon if you’re not in Europe) folks, I hope you’re all well. Who’re you and what new thing have you learnt this week?   A1: Hello, I am Alfred, maker, carer, caretaker, and miniaturist story teller. I have learnt that a hefty bop on the head is not to be taken lightly, even if it didn’t hurt at the time. Also, there is a lovely house in Wales that would really work for us, and I am going to be upset if we miss the chance with it. Tonight’s soundtrack is: Texas – Greatest Hits. #MakersHour

Q2: I have studied a lot because I really like to learn. What learning have you done recently? A2: Trying to stay away from work learning… I learnt that if you can’t find the Ikea part you want to replace because they don’t make them anymore, you can force a threaded bar into it and bolt it in place! Let’s see how long it lasts! #makershour@MakersHour@cupoftea.social

@MakersHour@cupoftea.social Q2: Hmmm.. I am learning about the qualities wood brings to ink mark making. It gains a subtle reflective quality where the ink holds light. I also learned my favorite WNBA team - the Atlanta Dream got into the playoffs. I feel like there are other things Iʻve learned but this week has been very hectic so... #makershour

@MakersHour@cupoftea.social A3 I'm entirely self taught, and often with a project I don't know how to do what I'm doing until I do it. The purpose of making the project teaches me how to make the project... #MakersHour
