I'm going to have to add something more here, aren't I…

@juergen_hubert@mementomori.social @cstross@wandering.shop, ouch. The last RAM which I bought (2×8GB DDR4 3200) cost about £40, though that was 2½ years ago. If the increase in price were in line with inflation, it'd be somewhere around £43 to £45 – but no. From the same supplier, it now costs £145. Let that popping sound be heard soon…

@CppGuy @davidrevoy @nekoplanet, I read the first and third words in it as having three syllables then I saw the “rm -rf /” comment and thought “oh, two syllables?” – it's definitely not immediately obvious because of that. Pratchett's writing of the Disorganiser telling the time, e.g. “9 eh em”: to me, “eh” sounds like “e” in “tell” and very unlike the name of “a”, which I'd describe as “ay” (as in “take”). If he'd written “9 ay em” (but not “9 ayem”), I'd have understood it immediately.

@rebane2001, it doesn't even have to be Enter as there's no keycode checking going on; Return, Ctrl-M and (not really all that surprisingly) Ctrl-J all work equally well. It's not enabled here by default (OpenSSH on Devuan; see ssh_config(5)), but it's trivial to do per-session: ssh -e'~' USER@HOST I can even use ^] if I want to (to a small extent) mimic telnet, either as that pair of characters representing Ctrl-] or the actual character itself (inserted as a literal via e.g. the shell's quote key).

@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot, hmm, he's right about Frogface and Refash being dangerous, at least. And I'm not convinced that he's equating them in any way other than being nationalist. Right now, I'm waiting to see what happens with this leadership challenge, but I suspect that it'll be like last time: Streeting's the one we could well do without but is the one who we'll get. (I wonder who the right-wing rags will be backing.)

@raymaccarthy @mmalc @EUCommission @jnfingerle, hah, yes. I'd buy a cable (at need) from the local $supermarket but the labelling is entirely whether they're A to C, A to that weird Apple one, or C to C (or occasionally A to one of the type B variants). If I want a cable purely for charging, these might be adequate; but I want data transfer too, and I won't buy those ones because the necessary labelling is completely missing.

Replying to
@Sebastian@Pertsch.social, there is one: the postinst script in the .deb will automatically add the repository (and the signing key) for you. The names of the files added by that script depend on exactly which build you're using, but will look like /etc/apt/sources.list/vivaldi*.list and /usr/share/keyrings/vivaldi*.gpg. (I found it surprising that it does this. It's something which should be done by local admin or by a tool such as extrepo, though it is definitely useful as an automatic update mechanism should the details change.) @jon@social.vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net, have you considered extrepo for handling adding/removing the repository info?

@octorine@fosstodon.org @mcc@mastodon.social @stephaniewalter@front-end.social, as does Calibre, sort of – it looks it up via either Google (beware LLM; no “&udm=14” in the URL) or Wordnik. There is a built-in way to edit these or add others, but it seems to require that you actually look up a word first. If you prefer to avoid that, you can open ~/.config/calibre/viewer-webengine.json (look for “lookup_locations”; it's fairly straight-forward to copy & edit the content of that block).

@pixelcluster, hmm… I had a look at the utilities' source code (not familiar with Rust…). The following looks like it works: #! /bin/sh sudo sh -c 'cd /sys/fs/cgroup/dmem mkdir -p game-vram cat dmem.capacity >game-vram/dmem.min echo '$$' >game-vram/cgroup.procs' exec "$@" I'm assuming no inconvenient “max”s; I've not tested with the kernel patches in place; and hopefully I've understood it well enough that that script will help others who are also as yet unassimilated by the systemd collective. (I don't plan to use exactly that. I'd use a daemon with a socket or I'd configure sudo specifically for that command, mainly 'cos I see sudo as “a bit risky”. Resisting systemd is not futile.)
