#terminal

When I don't have a laptop with me, I sometimes do server admin stuff using my smartphone. It's a reasonably secure phone because it runs a hardened Android distribution called #GrapheneOS. Or so I thought. Shoddy apps can of course violate your security and privacy on any operating system. As a matter of fact, I once set up a Mastodon server via SSH using my smartphone as a terminal. My terminal app of choice is @termux@fosstodon.org – it almost feels like Debian Gnu/Linux. Today I found out that the #Termux developers do not care about their users' privacy: They put Google's DNS resolvers as defaults into their app and do tell their users about it. Which means that until today, Google learnt about each hostname I resolved in Termux, although I had configured my smartphone to use a different DNS resolver. The Termux developers were alerted to this bug ten years ago by @rugk@chaos.social but chose not to do anything about it. Someone wrote a shell script to correct this. But it requires special permissions you can only grant via ADB. So I just used a text editor to replace Google's DNS resolvers with privacy-respecting ones gleaned from @kuketzblog@social.tchncs.de's recommendations in my first link: editor /data/data/com.termux/files/usr/etc/resolv.conf #TIL #dnsleak #terminal #android #app #privacy

A fun and useful shell trick: you can, effectively, pipe things from a remote computer into your local clipboard. Context: you're ssh'ed into a remote computer. Locally, you could pipe stuff to xclip or wl-copy or pbcopy to put it in your OS clipboard -- but that won't work in ssh. If your terminal supports OSC 52 (it probably does), here's a way to get that to work over ssh or mosh: cat - | base64 -w0 | { printf '\e]52;c;' ; cat - ; printf '\a' ; } Put that in a shell script, maybe "remote-copy", and then do: cmd-with-output | remote-copy and it appears in your local clipboard. I had to fiddle a bit with tmux, which by default handles that OSC 52 stuff itself and intercepts it. I did set -g set-clipboard on set -ga terminal-overrides ',foot*:Ms=\E]52;%p1%s;%p2%s\a' in my tmux config - I use the "foot" terminal, you'll have to change that suitably. The script needs base64 because in the printf string, if the input has a semicolon, escape byte, null byte, or similar special things, it will mess up printf. Base64 avoids all that. See https://ghostty.org/docs/vt/osc/52 -- it seems there are some other intriguing OSC commands there. The particular pieces to what's here: \e] says an escape sequence is starting 52 it's sequence 52 ;c; put stuff into the "clipboard" target then there's the payload, and a \a marks the end. #shell #terminal #command_line

It really wasn't doing a whole lot, it bleeped, PAGE cleared the screen, and not much else So I consulted the service manual, I initially looked at the keyboard, in theory in LOCAL mode or with TX/RX connected we should hear a bell similar to the one we hear at startup when CTRL + G is pressed, but alas nothing, checking the serial line on a scope, and sure enough, nothing! My first point of call was the keyboard, whilst PAGE was doing something, this existed outside of the keyboard matrix and was a switch which connected straight to the minibus backplane which contained all the control electronics Oh yeah - this machine is build before the advent of microprocessors, it's combinational logic boards on a passive backplane all the way down! A similar construction to contemporary minicomputers! After spending hours looking at the keyboard to understand it, I was rather blown away, this keyboard uses a 7 bit counter (using a 4 bit counter IC with some flip flops to extend it), feeding the lower 4 bits into a 4-16 line decoder which pulsed each row, and the upper 3 bits into an 8-to-1 multiplexer which scanned each column, when a key is pressed and the decoder pulses the row whilst the multiplexer reads the row, the output of the multiplexer goes low, stopping the clock going into counter, and the 7 bit number on that counter - it's the ASCII value of the key you pressed! #tektronix #tektronix4010 #vectorgraphics #terminal #vintagecomputing

Soo been a while since I posted; you may have seen I mentioned I have a new adventure Welll... I've been working on a recently acquired Tektronix 4010 vector terminal at @nottinghack@hachyderm.io This is the first machine which launched the iconic 4010 series vector graphics terminals which relied on the unique storage tube technology to display vector graphics without having to constantly rescan the image If this sounds confusing, here's a really good video from EMF 2024 by @stepleton@oldbytes.space describing the operation better than I could ever do https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ind_2eMzsbM This is where I have gotten so far... #tektronix #tektronix4010 #vectorgraphics #terminal #vintagecomputing

@nottinghack@hachyderm.io The story began on Friday 24th July 2026, when I see this holy grail of computing history on eBay for a price I can afford; and ensuring I am not dreaming, I buy it Cut to the very next day, I roll into Nottingham hackspace on my Sinclair C5 after doing half a day at Nottingham pride to meet with the seller who insisted they drive 2 hours to hand deliver it to me This turned out to be nearly perfect, as @philpem@digipres.club (who I cannot thank ENOUGH) happened to be down, and I discovered on that day they happen to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of Tektronix equipment and documentation to the point where they instantly told me where it was made as soon as I had removed the front cover and showed the Sharpied on serial number The original owner reported that they turned it on once, saw the whole screen light up and immediately turned it off, given that these CRTs are very rare and very bespoke, that is an understandable reaction, however based off of advice from Tom Stepleton (from the very good video above) and the user manual (which the previous owner had) showed this is normal, and you simply need to press PAGE to clear the screen. Getting the front panel off showed a more pressing problem though, a fuse had blown! #tektronix #tektronix4010 #vectorgraphics #terminal #vintagecomputing

so glow is lovely if you spend any time in a terminal reading markdown. BUT it's also lovely if you want a syntax-highlighted pager for shell scripts? which i did not realize until i opened one with glow by accident and got a happy surprise. #cli #terminal

Breaking!

Today Microsoft #Excel differences on Windows to macOS (missing menus just ribbon) got me thinking: can I not just run a #SpreadSheet in the #Linux #terminal for basic data work and visualisation? I want something akin to the original text only #Lotus123 (which I used for school work on DOS), but ideally with in-terminal graphics for #DataViz. There is https://github.com/andmarti1424/sc-im (must self compile, not trivial), several apparently abandoned tools like https://www.syntax-k.de/projekte/teapot/ - and multiple vibe-coded rust tools I'd rather avoid... Suggestions please?
