Mat
Hi! I hope you're doing well.
I'm Mat. I speak EN/ES/FR.
I like making computers do fun stuff.
Running #postmarketOS on FP5. #CCCAC at least once a week.
Profile picture ALT: Photo of a white cat sitting on his back legs in front of some leaves. He's almost posing for the picture.
GPG: ED35A6AC65A06B69
I work at @egosoft@mastodon.social, but do not speak for them.
Zero tolerance for "AI"
My Fairphone 5 running #postmarketOS re-gained audio support today, with bonus working mic as well!!
Seems like the ALSA configs use a device identifier that only matches if you don't use U-Boot, as it sets a different name, and thus ALSA doesn't find it. Temp solved via `sudo ln -s /usr/share/alsa/ucm2/conf.d/qcm6490/{Fairphone\ 5.conf,fairphone-Fairphone5-.conf}`
Many thanks to @bshah@fosstodon.org and @aelin@donotsta.re for looking into it and spending time helping.
Considering calling slop-infected projects "nonfree," as copyright-laundered code (in my opinion) isn't licensable under whatever actually-free license the project claims.
Is there any substance to this? Anyone else feel the same?
I am European, so specifically interested in non-US laws/examples. US seems to lean toward slop being public domain (despite being copyright-laundered…), but I understand that should not apply here.
Is there an alternative to libpebble3 that isn't using LLMs? I'm starting work on a #Pebble daemon for Linux mobile but I want dependencies to be FOSS.
There's a lib called [pebble-le](https://github.com/leso-kn/pebble-le) though it's not been updated in 3 years. Maybe my best bet though, given the alternative is implementing the BT LE comms myself.
Managed to build it with the Docker container provided at https://codeberg.org/comaps/docker-android-sdk however the liborganicmaps.so I get from that does not successfully link with the F-Droid APK I was running. Trying to see if I can instead get an APK with debug symbols, but gradlew assembleDebug still strips symbols...
Too many cool things to do, how to choose?
Maybe I just do all of them (but, really slowly).
Wow, never seen a ping like this. Thanks for the quick warning, broadcasting here in case someone affected is not in the Matrix room.
This is the bug it runs into, breaks booting (can still roll back to an older gen if you have physical access): https://lore.kernel.org/all/bb9ab61c-3bed-4c3d-baf0-0bce4e142292@moonlit-rail.com/
@Feral_3D@mastodon.social well, the "ideal" OS depends on your needs. If you need a "working" phone, right now Android is the only option.
I'm personally running postmarketOS on it because I choose independence from Google, but a lot of stuff I just can't do yet. Non-exhaustive list:
- any form of calling
- banking
- maps navigation via GPS
- non-blurry photos (but colors are getting better!)
- "safe" updates (rollback if something broke / got interrupted)
I wrote a blogpost about it: https://blog.allpurposem.at/linux-on-my-phone
@muvlon@hachyderm.io Interesting! I did indeed only see media reporting on it, but did not read the actual case.
Will read up on (I guess) this document to get a better understanding. Though I hold that EU should not be subject to US rulings, it is helpful to see how other jurisdictions interpret it as a hint of how EU might handle it.
Either way, my personal belief is still that LLM output is subject to the copyright of its training material, and thus 99% unfree.
Fedi has been so seamless recently, but every once in a while I get a little reminder of some jank going on.
Here, my Mastodon timeline claims my post got a reply, but clicking on the actual post shows no replies. Hopefully not missing out on something :P
@justsoup @flamingradian yes, I'll be following it closely. Running with mrtest -a right now.
Might take a stab at adding some features (haptics, compose key) to match how I used it on Android, but already it is super impressive and really completely changes my experience of pmOS.
@UndeadLeech@fosstodon.org hmm, that's quite puzzling then. --location-status returns capabilities: 3gpp-lac-ci, gps-raw, gps-nmea, agps-msa, agps-msb, which sounds to me like NMEA is enabled.
--location-get returns nothing 🙃
@katzenmann@c3d2.social @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social hm, that's true. I guess I haven't found a very usable Email app. I read Thunderbird works, but it doesn't render any emails. Currently I use Geary, but it's unfortunately very buggy on mobile and doesn't do background sync.
The maps app Nick showed also looks nice. Currently my choices are:
- Pure Maps (buggy, but functional when my GPS stops saying I'm in Paris)
- GNOME Maps (freezes my phone after a little bit, otherwise nice)
- Organic Maps w/ Waydroid (no GPS)
@UndeadLeech@fosstodon.org Oh interesting! It does look like I have modem-gnss.service enabled & running. It always tells me I'm in the middle of France (I live in Aachen), after like 15min it sometimes figures out where I am but by that time I already got where I need to be by other means.
Also, I only had the "compass" feature work once in Pure Maps. Otherwise it doesn't show me which direction I'm heading...
