Embrace the future. Bury tradition. Seek adventure. Enhance people's lives where you can. And never, ever, pass up the opportunity to punch a Nazi.
Illegitimi non carborundum.
Saw this post on Reddit about a TNG kid who went back to watch TOS episodes and how it helped some episodes of Futurama click for them.
I greatly enjoy hearing about younger people who grew up with TNG, and how they eventually approach TOS.
For me, growing up through the progression of TOS (in reruns) and the TOS films, the journey to TNG felt like a natural upgrade path that followed technology and TV/film trends of the time. So it wasn't a big leap.
But I can only imagine growing up with TNG (or later) as your default... and then flipping back to the 1960s -- that's quite a jarring shift! 😅
I imagine the TOS movies would be much easier to stomach, at least. Trek grew up quite a bit with the shift to silver screen. Less of a TV stage play, and more of a "real" living world, with the budget to match.
This is a friendly reminder the the #aiart tag (and #ai, #localllm, #llm, etc) exists so you can filter them out of your timeline using the tools built into Mastodon for that specific purpose.
Then nobody has to put on their cute clockwork anti-AI performance because of a random shitpost.
Everyone wins.
But if you can't jive with that, I'm happy to mute you and pretend you don't exist. 🍻
This is all over the place online, but it's still pretty depressing. Fucking sucks, the state of the series as it was left.
And worse, the usual bigoted idiots are going to smugly suggest it's because the show "went woke".
For me, Gatwa wasn't the best doctor by a long shot. But when he was at his best, he was quite good. His queer angle made complete sense to me, so that was never an issue. But making him constantly weeping in nearly every episode or so destroyed any impact when something big DID happen. _"Oh, he's crying... is it a big deal, or is it just another Tuesday?"_
But something clearly happened there, with his sudden exit. I suspect one day we'll hear more about it, like we did with Eccleston. (Two actors having series-disrupting issues with RTD? Hmm...)
Jodie Whittaker was in a similar situation: she was terrific at her best, but the episodes she wound up in were hit or miss. Other than Graham her companions were mostly lukewarm wallpaper. I can barely remember any stories with her, too. What's up with that?
Fuck, even Capaldi's run was hit or miss; though many mediocre episodes were elevated by his participation. He's a great actor with a shit ton of gravitas. Thankfully, his final season, with Bill, before leaving, was arguably his best.
But other than that season, I'd argue the show has always been on a downward trajectory. I can't put my finger on it, but since the 2005 soft reboot, it's been appointment television for me. And then at some point during Smith's run, post-Pond, my enthusiasm waned a bit. I still watched, but at some point it just turned into an "obligation". A state where the pull was the dwindling possibility that the next episode JUST MIGHT be a banger... maybe...
I dunno what to think anymore. :/

Holy crap.
> Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.
I just caught a guy unironically whining about "AI slop" while using this as his profile avatar.
Not sure how to judge #Backrooms. Just got back.
I watched most of the web series for the first time, before seeing it.
I think I like the web series better. It's more interesting seeing how it unfolds as it goes.
The film, however, takes another path with it. It's less interesting. Less corporate/science involvement. More horror.
Which blows my mind, because I remember an interview where the guy behind it explicitly called out the horror element that others took. It's better as a kind of unknown variable. Something setting you in extreme unease. An uncanny valley of reality. (The film actually gives a terrific analogy to describe it that I really enjoyed, but I won't spoil that here.)
And the film DOES go into that a bit, but it has a specific narrative mission to fit into a neat 2 hour film. A film that has to serve as a clean introduction to the concept for mainstream audiences.
It's not bad. You'll probably enjoy it. It's unique, and if I didn't already load up on the existing stuff, I'd probably have left a lot more impressed.
See the film first. Then watch the web series it's based on. You'll have a much richer experience for both, I think.
For me, 3/5. But I absolutely understand how it would rank higher for anyone going into it cold.
So many great hits from Queen, but for me, this one will always be my personal favorite.
Four episodes into #SpiderNoir and I am utterly smitten with it.
I still don't know how old Ben is supposed to be, though.
I think this month will be my final birthday. What form do I fill out to opt out of future birthdays? Done with this.

"You can fit 30 million mini hot dog links in the Empire State Building, but the reflecting pool has no roof on it. You can put 30 million mini wieners in the pool, but then you can put another 30 million on top... and another... and keep going. There's no limit to the amount of them you can put in the reflecting pool. Some say there's no limit. They call it 'in-finitty'. An 'infin-itty' amount of tiny dogs... they say that's a LOT..."
Spoiler for the ending of #HomeFrontTheRevolution.
Assuming it's legit, it's always to difficult to think about the people you've lost who could benefited from this kind of thing if only they could have held out a couple more years...
I always understood that the 32nd century ships shown in Discovery/SFA, what with their invisible programmable matter nonsense, would be difficult to elegantly do justice for Eaglemoss/Fanhome models.
But this is on another level. Good lord, just don't make the damned thing. 🤮
