The OpenStreetMap Community

"Over the last 20 years the OpenStreetMap (OSM) project has collected an enormous amount of data about our planet and written a lot of Open Source software. OSM-based maps and apps are everywhere. How do you organize two million contributors in a mostly volunteer project to work on a common goal? And what exactly is that common goal?"

If You Own It, Why Can't You Fix It?

~"Corps are making it harder for you to repair the devices you already own, & forcing you to pay for repairs & replacements. Costs consumers millions worldwide, sends tons of perfectly fixable items to landfills, & hands big tech control over your property. Join #AdamSavage and our friends at #iFixit to dive into how manufacturers lock you out of the stuff you own, how the #RightToRepair movement is fighting back, & what you can do."

Finally got around to trying out the Mario Kart 64: Amped Up mod today. Fun, nostalgic, and very well done.

I love having character skins, the levels were surprising and fun, and the soundtrack fit well.

I finally hit publish on a post I've been kicking around.

The Human/Personal/Indie Web

I didn't really want to wind up with a {collection of links + mine & others' general vibes about the human/personal/indie web} or to try to be a resource.

Alas, I landed at no greater message than: here’s a collection of meandering vibes and links and an enthusiastic "here here" from my small corner.

Help Shape the Future of PHP: Take the State of PHP Survey

PHP is powered by a global community of developers, maintainers, contributors, companies, and users. To better understand that community and the ecosystem around it, The PHP Foundation and PhpStorm, a JetBrains IDE, are launching the first annual State of PHP survey.

Voyager 1 Approaches One Light-Day from Earth

As it heads out of the solar system never to return, the deep space probe Voyager 1 is headed for yet another cosmic milestone. In late 2026, it will become the first spacecraft to travel so far that a radio signal from Earth takes 24 hours, or one light day, to reach it.

CERN built an antimatter containment unit and took it for a literal test drive

Scientists in Geneva took 92 antiprotons out for a spin — a very delicate one — in a truck, in a never-tried-before test drive that has been deemed a success. If this antimatter had come into contact with actual matter, even for a fraction of an instant, it would have been annihilated in a quick flash of energy.

Seeing Red: Dragonflies and Humans Share the Same Red-light Detection Mechanism

"A new study from Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU) has found that dragonflies sense red light similarly to mammals, including us. As many medical devices also rely on red light, their findings could be important not just in zoology but also in medical fields that rely on red light-sensing."
