@jwz@mastodon.social they literally fed it training data from competitive hacking contests. All the behaviours are common tactics. So it wasn't even inventive. If an individual hacked these companies, they'd be arrested. The only real question is, why aren't AI companies legally responsible for the AIs they are prompting?

@ArtHarg@mastodon.nl @ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk the US AI model developers are being funded by Nvidia. They are effectively incentivised to make inefficient models that need a lot of hardware to run. When this pops, it'll be the little and efficient models that run on local hardware that'll survive. They might help you search your photos for that time your cat jumped on the light, or do real time language translation. It won't be generating these imaginary trillions of revenue for use cases that don't exist.

@alice@lgbtqia.space @evan@cosocial.ca I think the reason Mastodon generally isn't an adversarial battlefield, is because we don't have algorithms and automated boosting. These tools encourage trolls. And also lead to dark actors manipulating the narrative.

@MarkHoltom@mastodonapp.uk for the amount of money these cost, you could have instead spent it on efficiency (like insulation) or renewables. And you'd have made an order of magnitude larger net reduction in CO2. Carbon capture is just bonkers.

@fesshole@mastodon.social I'm not sure if it's still the case, but it certainly used to be that in government agencies, every other promotion would get you moved to another agency. There were good reasons. But I also worked for several people that were known to have been promoted to get rid of them. The proportion of high level seniors that were incompetent sociopaths was easily as high as any big corp I've worked for.

@malwaretech I work in a large company that was hacked last year. Many modern systems were compromised. The RS6000 box and several of our ancient mainframes were untouched and weren't even turned off during the lockdown or recovery. Gave them a quick once over and they kept ticking like it was 1999.

@alextecplayz @teknomagic @Voyageur_Pragmatique the only way to train LLMs to the mediocre level they've achieved is by stealing vast amounts of content. It's not economical to do it legally and ethically.

@Lana@beige.party to get to my company's mail or chat, I first open a landing page, that has a blocking advert for the AI human resources app (which couldn't tell me how many days holiday I have left, or even how to find it). I dismiss the ad, then click to go to the office apps. The default page is just Copilot functions. Actual email and chat don't even appear as icons in the nav bar. Instead I have to click on the "more apps" button to find them. So much productivity!

@Lana@beige.party when I open my corp emails... It's all AI training links (to LinkedIn 🫩), and internal promotion to tell us we should be using AI. When I attended an MS Copilot training course, they showed us how to use AI to put filters on a table in Excel, or use AI to search a Word document... It's less clicks to do it yourself!

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange You'll be hard pressed to find a business that doesn't use Google or MS desktop apps. A good chunk of businesses have their enterprise applications in US controlled cloud. And those that don't are often using third party apps and SaaS that rely on US cloud under the hood. Basically, losing connections to Google, MS and AWS would shut down a country. Which is why we need IT sovereignty... but it's not an easy problem to solve. US tech is ingrained deep!

@geomannie@mastodon.scot to be fair, Android Auto and CarPlay were initially very limited for this reason. There were limited applications, they had strict guidelines. While the car wasn't parked, you could only press a limited number of buttons and see a limited list of options. But after years of complaints that these car interfaces weren't like peoples' phone screens, they've relented. And manufacturers' interfaces are often worse!

@peter@thepit.social anyone else think that people that vibe code, are like the VBA coders of 20 years ago? They can create tools and apps that are superficially useful and impressive. But they don't have the knowledge to create a well engineered and supportable product. So like the curse of shadow IT using Excel macros and Access databases, it's going to take years of pain while proper development supports the slop because it has to, and slowly replaces it once everyone realises the damage done.

@alextecplayz @EUCommission there's clearly diminishing returns on LLMs. They've run out of content to consume. Brute forcing the learning is making smaller gains for exponentially more money each cycle. And the benefits are still a long way short of what the techbros promised years ago. But they've got up keep fuelling the hype train and doubling down or they'll be called out as the emperors with no clothes. Let the bubble burst. Let the sanity return. Then see what's useful. Burn the rest.

@Caiotekit@convo.casa an air fryer is just a fan oven. Food cooking-wise, they don't do anything an electric fan oven can't. The only advantage is they're small, so they heat up quickly. And you can often put the drawers in the dishwasher. I made the mistake of getting a microwave with an air fryer function... which means it's nearly the size of a normal oven, so warmup time is several minutes. And when the walls and top get splattered in food, it's just as hard to clean as an oven.

@pa27 @ChrisMayLA6 my understanding is the UK system was set up decades ago, with extremely long contacts. With the aim to encourage gas. Renewables weren't factored in, not due to corruption, but because they weren't a viable alternative at the time. The turning off of renewables and paying for gas is due to the grid being designed a long time ago around power stations in strategic locations. Even if the dated payment mechanism was updated, we'd still need to fix the grid.

@alextecplayz @EUCommission training is different to using. Even if you run a slimmed down and aggregated model, the model it was trimmed from was a monster that consumed petabytes of data and cost billions in electricity and hardware, over thousands of CPU years of time to train.

@hjwp@fosstodon.org @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @freakboy3742@cloudisland.nz This. PowerPoint is often used to write picture book level documents. Often to a standard content format, so seniors/those with short attention spans can just skip to bit they're vaguely accountable for signing off on. It might only be 10 slides, but each one has 6 titles, 15 bullets, and enough words under each one to require punctuation. So they are just distributed as "decks" of self standing information, no presenter required.

@jackemled @sundogplanets Starlinks have propulsion. I'm pretty confident they are fully stabilised. They are actively able to avoid colliding (provided there aren't multiple fails). And if they were spinning, they'd need even bigger solar. And they operate at many kilowatts continuously. They aren't microsatellite scale.

Internally, they know that just about the only genuine common use case for Gig broadband is.... basically gamers so they can download AAA games and patches really quickly. And even that is pretty niche. Marketing has to do a hell of a lot of upsell!

@geerlingguy@mastodon.social meanwhile, I just bought a couple of home switches and skipped on paying an extra £50 to get the 2.5Gb versions. And downgraded my broadband to from 500Mb to 350Mb to save £5 per month. I just don't have many use cases where I need anything quicker, so I may as well save the money.

@alextecplayz @EUCommission a large proportion of the damage isn't the hosting chat sessions. It's the training to create the models in the first place. OpenAI spend billions for each new revision of ChatGPT. Roughly half of all the energy that ChatGPT 3 consumed across all data centre use, was on training, before it ran a single public chatbot. 4 and 5 were probably no more efficient. And running locally doesn't mean less energy consumed, just it's warming your house instead of a data centre.

@mhoye@cosocial.ca apparently her frame doesn't have a SRAM UDH derailleur hanger. Mountain bikes with SRAM kit switched to that standard several years ago, so nothing current will fit. So she's using an MTB derailleur that came out in 2019. If her frame had a new style mount, or she was Shimano sponsored, then a gravel groupset would have worked fine to get that gearing.

@mhoye@cosocial.ca I'm sure it's all unused parts. The derailleur is still for sale. But it's not a current model. And only because her frame manufacturer hasn't adopted the new standard yet. Road bike design is often more conservative than gravel bikes. And MTB is constantly changing.

@hausfath@fediscience.org the hardware is getting more efficient. But LLMs themselves are only seeing minor gains. To get marginal increases in quality of response, we're needing exponentially more compute power. This analysis only estimates direct energy usage. I've read that if you factor in the energy used for training, and pro rata it to users, it roughly doubles the energy used.

@parismarx@mastodon.online LLMs have accidentally found a cheat code for the human brain that bypasses our bullshit detectors. A statistical next word generator can fool most humans into believing it's aware. And AI companies are taking full advantage of this (partly because they've also been fooled).

@stux@mstdn.social public transport only works when it's given an advantage over the car. Putting buses and trams in a traffic lane is pointless as the only people that'll use it are those that don't have the means to drive. If you can make it compete on travel time, then public transport becomes more popular, which means it gets more investment. And the benefit snowballs.
