I LOVE HAVING MY PHONE NUMBER HARVESTED BY SCAMMERS TO SIGN ME UP FOR SHIT, WHEN I UPLOAD MY CV!! the first one is a sign up for CryptoCom, second is someone trying to log in to my Revolut account. Heck, it could be the jobs site that was breached, I don't fucking know. But honestly this shit sucks, why in 2026 do we need to give out phone numbers and personal e-mails for job applications. I'm applying to your company sure, but I would like to be sure that the person contacting me is specifically from the company, not some intermediary or a scammer. I should also insert that invisible anti-LLM text into my CV, even though it might probably do fuck all at this point.

In another sickening twist to Google's grasp on Android, Google can now require you to have an Android device with Google Mobile Services, or an iOS device with the reCAPTCHA mobile app installed, in order to solve CAPTCHAs.

@rysiek there's the deobfuscated python code in a GitHub issue: https://github.com/theori-io/copy-fail-CVE-2026-31431/issues/54 My guess is that they compressed it so they can get it down to the 732 byte size, as if anyone really cares about that these days.

There's a new spam wave of AI-generated slop for SEO purposes, lot of new accounts from various instances. All posts use the following tags:

#BrowserAutomation #AI #TechDeep #WebDev #Playwright

#fediblock #fediadmin

I kinda wish Fedi had moderation bots we could use to mass-block or mass-ban this stuff based on patterns or something.

@anon_opin@mastodon.social YES! Degrees are almost considered paperweights in some fields here in Romania, because even for entry-level shit they require years of experience. I saw just yesterday a remote job position for entry-level data operator stuff (but titled as IT Operator) which required college education, when every other similar position only requires high school. Oh, can't a remote job? Here are some office jobs, but they all require you to have a DRIVER'S LICENSE despite being slap-dash in the middle of the city, or easily accessible by public transport. Fuck these asswipes. It's either you work at a supermarket (and e.g. at LIDL Romania it's just modern-day wage-slaving for slightly above minimum pay with no way to get promoted unless you know specific types of people), or some other job where you work for peanuts and biscuits (minimum pay) doing stuff like hard labour in a warehouse that you get to by public transport in an hour or so.

@lps@mograph.social @iFixit@mastodon.social this is a good reference point for bootloader unlock support, which should be part of such a rating https://github.com/zenfyrdev/bootloader-unlock-wall-of-shame custom ROM / alternative OS support is harder to track and quantize given that there's so many types and support (official or unofficial) scattered across XDA Forums, Telegram, GitHub that it's really hard to find them all So probably just checking if there's support from the most popular ROM, LineageOS, and most popular alternative OS, postmarketOS would be the only reliable way for that to work right now.

@notthatkindofdoctor @arstechnica no, that's not OK. Don't punish the kids (in this case, infants and small kids dying or getting seriously hurt) because their parents are morons. Kids don't have a choice for who their parents are. There's no character picker when you join Earth. Take those kids away from those parents, let the justice system handle the parents' mistakes, ensure the child protective system and foster care system can do its best to keep those kids healthy and happy.

@kde speaking of theming, it would be nice to be able to automatically switch more than just the global theme (dark mode) at night. It would be nice to also be able to set the window decorations, maybe even the rest of the other stuff under the Global Theme page (although those may not be used as frequently). Either way, Union with CSS styling is really neat, CSS or CSS-like syntax is imo the best way to style stuff, on the web and for software.

@hywan thankfully a follow-up PR changes the default back to off: https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/pull/313931 I think the original intention was to add Copilot as a co-author to every commit where Copilot was invoked to generate code, but somehow they fucked it up, and shipped it anyway. I don't know who the fuck just merges stuff like this, even the Copilot summary mentioned (in the original PR) that they didn't change the value in the fallback, which could cause issues. VSCode is a mess..

@ziclaud oh god HyperOS, that one is a nightmare to try and unlock compared to MIUI. My condolences. You need a 30-day old Mi Account, the Xiaomi Community App and have a Global device. CN devices running HyperOS can't be unlocked anymore, because phone unlocking is illegal in mainland China since 2022 when the government passed a decision to outlaw it. And with it is the "quota reached" bug that requires you to apply for unlocking at midnight Beijing time. Hell, now you have to run some Python script or whatever, from a brief look through XDA Forums.

@ziclaud depends on the device. My Redmi Note 11 took two attempts before I could finally unlock the bootloader, I had to wait 2 weeks because I clicked twice on the Mi Unlock tool. You need a Xiaomi account, insert a SIM card into your phone, use that phone number for the Xiaomi account, then you can start the verification process. It's horrible, but it can be done.

@JulianOliver@mastodon.social Digi Romania uses CGNAT for IPv4, residential contracts only have dynamic DNS, you can request a subdomain on .go.ro or .home.ro. You cannot get a static IP for a residential contract, you must have a business contract, and each static IP costs €1-2/month. I personally just use Cloudflare Tunnel to forward my self-hosted services to my .alextecplayz.com subdomains, such as immich and vaultwarden, and previously radicale. I never use IPv6 since I don't know much about it and frankly networking was never my forte. But I think it works, you just have to set up the router to receive a dynamic IPv6 address from the ISP, there is no page on their site that mentions IPv6, and presumably there's no difference yet between residential and business for this.

@guigsy @EUCommission sure, but they don't have to be trained 24/7, and most people don't need large LLM models for their use cases. Most people can use a small 0.6B or 1.6B model (e.g through ente's new Ensu app, which downloads a small local LLM that uses 1GB of RAM and is surprisingly fast even on a mid-range phone - see in my post here: https://techhub.social/@alextecplayz/116353204966681252) It's plenty for your average joe and their phone, which is VASTLY better energy-wise than using GPT5 which uses a lot of RAM in top-of-the-line, 600W+ GPUs in one or more datacenters in the USA, plus it's better for privacy since the chats and the responses are saved locally instead of being sent to be 'anonymized' and used for training data. Or models like GPT-OSS which is 120B, and requires an NVIDIA H100 with 80GB of VRAM. One measly midrange phone running a model in 1GB of RAM on an efficient ARM processor versus a $38,000 GPU with a TDP of 750W to answer Average Joe's inane question about X or Y.

@guigsy @EUCommission Hard agree, but we still don't know when this stupid bubble will burst (or if it will burst instead of moving directly to a new hype bubble). And when it does eventually burst, it'll be damaging to the world's economy. Hopefully when it does burst training content unethically becomes uneconomical and we actually end up with genuine uses cases for genAI. I'll still advocate for the lesser evil of what we currently have, small models, discouraging the humanizing of LLMs, and self-hosting it if someone really needs it, it's an improvement over ChatGPT.

@guigsy @EUCommission but wouldn't you rather run that training once a year or once in a long while? AI models are constantly being trained and re-trained all the time, but we're at a point where the average Joe doesn't need the latest model to answer his (potentially stupid or embarrassing) questions at 3AM. And we do have nuclear and renewables, nothing could theoretically stop us from having a 100% renewable AI training facility sometime in the future, besides cooling which still requires vast amounts of water. We just need to stop the AI bros from this bullshit hype, and revisit the LLM concept sometime in the future. What models we have right now are enough, but they have their stupid visions that genAI will lead us to General AI which is just plain BS. We don't need more models to be trained.

god windows 10 is so fucking bad, especially on a slow-ass Celeron

one of my relatives uses this laptop with 4GBs of RAM and W10 is horrid.

did you know that in the Settings app, there's a loading animation on the Windows Update page? it's right there at the top of the page, a slim animated progress bar

did you know that this loading animation isn't for the UI (which is actually just set to 0 opacity, meaning you can still select text and click on buttons), but for Windows Update itself, the update checker?

...but then other pages have a circular loading throbber for when it needs to show a loading animation without hiding the UI? 🤨 So why the fuck hide the UI then, why didn't they bother to put the circle animation on the Windows Update page as well?

just another one of those questions we'll never get an answer for. it's such a bad and inconsistent operating system JFC

@jbowen@mast.hpc.social heck, maybe even self-host Forgejo or sourcehut itself, or find a hoster.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend sourcehut.org (sr.ht) simply because of its affiliation with Drew DeVault, the person behind the Stallman Report, who has been revealed through his reddit and image board account(s) to support stuff like:

  • "14 year old girls should be required to have an IUD installed. Ten years of contraception that requires a visit to the doctor to remove prematurely"
  • made a reddit bot called SourceHunt in order to source anime images uploaded had r/pomf on its allowlist (r/pomf was a pedophilic subreddit, it had many loli images)
  • has a Platinum account on danbooru and translated many japanese to english text from specifically loli imagery

(sourced from https://dmpwn.info)

So, it's funny when the guy that wrote the Stallman report which (rightfully) put RMS on blast for being a misogynistic fucking creep and his objections towards banning CSAM, is also one of those creeps that interacts with loli.

@eunews@mastodon.social I think we should also make these changes much easier, it's a lot of bureaucracy to change it. Here in Romania, according to the ACCEPT ngo (https://transinromania.ro/tranzitie/tranzitie-juridica/) you have to get lawyered up (or represent yourself, but fuck that, I'm too anxious for this), sue the local council, bring a few witnesses as required (and they may not always be family, so 🤷‍♀️), gather up a bunch of medical documents from doctors that show off the medical changes of HRT over time, and have your witnesses attest to your life etc, use arguments like relevant articles from the New Penal Code Law 119/1996 and the OECD. At least privacy can be requested, so that only your initials would be listed in the ECRIS system and the court schedule, and without public presence in the courtroom. Kinda wish we wouldn't have to go through this honestly. What's wrong with filing everything online, or going up to a desk, showing a few documents and signing a form? Oh right, we're neck deep in bureaucracy in Romania 😒
